Lynn :) | 35 comments There are a lot that I like, but here is a smaller list.

Funny guys that are a little cocky.
Hype best friend.
The one character that's older than the rest.
The depressed duo.

The list could go on! (Also, please don't judge my opinions, I haven't really read very many books.)

Kaytie | 72 comments villains with great origin stories
snarky best friends
bad boy with a heart of gold

there are probably more but those are a few of my favorite character tropes.

Then you would enjoy Nelson DeMille's character John Corey. His remarks always crack me up.

message 10: by Maya (last edited Oct 27, 2023 09:49AM) (new)

Maya | 23 comments Oh, I love this. And I only figured this out like three months ago, but:
If everything in a character would suggest they aren't good, and then they are just the kindest person to childen. Like, they pretend to hate kids but as soon as one actually shows up they just immediately drop everything to play babysitter.
Same thing if a character is dark, and broody, and sometimes mean, but at the same time just cares so much.
Just ... grumpy characters in general, but they only appear grumpy and on the inside they have a heart of gold and are not going to ignore it.
(Close second are characters that just have a heart of gold, without the grumpy appeance, because I just love it when people care so much, something about it always makes me feel better.)

message 17: by TimeFliesAway (new)

TimeFliesAway | 121 comments The one who don't needs saving and can take care of themselves.

The one who doesn't shy away from being direct and straight to the point, without talking around the bush, even when it's because of nervosity.

The one who knows what they want and actively fights for it – even when they're insecure about it or have second guesses. Someone with a goal basically. Doesn't have to be anything fancy or big, just something.

The one who's weird, knows it and embraces it.

The one who's loyal to their own morals and wouldn't mind stopping a close friend if it goes against their morals. Even if it might mean losing that "friend".

message 32: by Akshay (new)

Akshay (onehappymonk) | 22 comments I feel like I'm in a minority nowadays but I love great villains!
By that I mean real, outright villains - because I've seen a big trend in recent years to try and explain and humanise and make villains relatable or to traumatically justify them like I'm supposed to feel bad for them and that's fine (sometimes) but I miss just having villains who were just bad because somewhere they made a choice and they had badness in them.
That combined with a well crafted personality is the key to success in most any story with a hero-villain dynamic because as a wise person once said: a hero is only as good as his villain allows him to be (pardon my mish-mashy quote).
