I've asked different groups of people (other writers and friends on GR) and I always get different responses, so I'm curious what everyone here thinks!

I much much much prefer third person. I feel you miss out on so much when it’s first person in terms of character perspective. I especially get annoyed when authors write in first person and then re-release the same book but with the male pov like with blood and ash. There are however many books that I love that are in first person. I can’t explain it but when its done well it’s amazing. Like Fourth Wing is first person and I am obsessed with it. But with blood and ash I think it would have worked better as third person.
My favourite fantasy romance series is the Tairen Soul series and it’s just written soooo well and it’s all third person.
I think at the end of the day it actually comes down to the author.

Tbf, I'm only on book 4, but you make a valid point!! It would make much more sense to be written in 3rd person instead 🤔🤔
Side note: I've never heard of the Tairen Soul series, but I like the other two series you mentioned, so I'm going to check that out!
I think I prefer first person with dual POV. Third person has to be done by an author that really has mastered it.
Oooo, great question! 1st for me, but I also don't mind third limited. Third omniscient throws me waaay off.
i think high fantasy, particularly high fantasy that takes place across a continent(s) lends itself to third person pov. when telling the story of different people in so many places, having a third person narrator brings a bit of consistency to the story and makes it feel more cohesive.
I usually prefer first! But I like third as well, though I do prefer limited. Sometimes it can be challenging to switch back and forth when reading different books, but I find first person to be easier to adjust to.
Defs prefer 3rd person past tense, but I don’t mind 1st person if it’s done well. What I absolutely can’t stand is when there are multiple POVs and they switch between 1st and 3rd person (this happened in one of my reads last month and it made me so mad ahaha)
Normally first person with the exception of Throne of Glass and Crescent Cityoh and cruel prince if that's in third I don't remember
I prefer first person. I feel more disconnected to the main character if I’m not reading it from their perspective.
