Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Happy 22nd of March!

This month we will be doing two things:

1. Discuss Nick Hornby's High Fidelity.
2. Celebrate TFG's 5th year anniversary.

The activities that I've setup will be tied with either one these or sometimes both. There's going to be a lot of music, top 5 lists, exes, etc.

High Fidelity is a relatively short book. You can finish it in one sitting but here's the suggested plan:

Week 1: Prologue - Chapter 06
Week 2: Chapter 07 - Chapter 14
Week 3: Chapter 15 - Chapter 25
Week 4: Chapter 26 - Chapter 35

Similar to the previous book discussions, accomplishing the activities will earn you points but the actual number of points per activity and total points tally will remain undisclosed until the F2F discussion proper. However, the number of MVP this month is not only going to be one.

Digital copies of the book can be found:

mobi | epub

Download the audiobook here.

Enjoy!

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments As I've introduced on yesterday's F2F discussion, we are going to emulate one of the character's story arc and build our very own fictional bands.

I'll be giving simple assignments every week for each band to accomplish. These assignments are basically the necessary steps to starting your own band, albeit fictional in our case.

================================================

WEEK 1: Forming the Band

We'll start with the most basic step: the formation of the band. Find, recruit or bully people that you want to be part of your band. The required minimum number of members per band is 4 while the maximum is 5. Each member should have a designated instrument to play.

We already have the starting members for 5 bands yesterday. Anyone interested in joining a band or any of those bands who still need members can post "ads" on this thread. Of course, you are also allowed to form your own. Note that you don't have to be present on the April F2F event to join.

Once you've done this, come up with a name for your band. Keep in mind that unlike in real life, you will not be allowed to change the name and you are going to be stuck with it for the rest of activity.

Send me the name of the band and your full roster via Goodreads private messaging.

Deadline on Saturday night. First couple of bands to submit their assignment gets extra points.

The favorite past-time of Rob and his employees at Championship Vinyl is creating Top 5 music lists. Let's start making our own top 5 lists, shall we?

Every Tuesday for this discussion month, I'll be giving two Top 5 themes and each of us is to create ONE top 5 list on one of those themes. You must include some lines that makes the song qualified to be included on that list.

You can choose any song from any genre or any era to include in your lists but we have one rule:

1. No two songs of the same artist on your list.

Point System:
First 3 for each side of the mixtape gets bonus points.
Additional points if you didn't repeat a song that was already mentioned by another person.

==========================

WEEK 1: On Love

Let's start with the beginnings and endings of the most common theme used in music: love.

Side A: Hello Love
- songs about enchanting first meetings, love at first sight, falling in love, etc.

Side B: Farewell Love
- songs about breaking up, falling out of love, moving on, etc.

message 21: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hello Love ang Falling Slowly? Lyrics aside, this was written for the film Once, and I'll be out of my head if I say that that is what I call Hello Love.

message 22: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments I'd say it's open for interpretation but I'll let the artist speak for her art. Marketa Irglova's infamous speech at the Oscars which she almost didn't have a chance to say:

"This song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are..."

message 23: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments ANGUS: How far are you on the book na? Have you already met Barry? Are you intentionally trying to take the role of Barry? Disqualifying songs from other people's top 5 and all? Hahaha

message 24: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Because all the singer can do is hope to save a possibly doomed relationship? I haven't met Barry yet so I'm not intentionally taking his role (diba ikaw siya??). I'm not disqualifying songs from people's list, it's just that I have a different take on this song and therefore, it's going to be disqualified from my list. I couldn't count the number of times I curled up listening to Falling Slowly so you can just imagine how high my eyebrows went when I saw that it's on a Hello Love mix tape.

I do not want to sabotage the discussion or steal (still!) your thunder but maybe we can discuss for a bit what mix tapes are for. How does one select the tracks? Why would someone create a mix tape? What considerations should be made? How does one avoid sending the wrong message (consider this example of open and different interpretations)? In an age where music is easily available through streaming and piracy, are mix tapes still relevant? Et cetera.

Okay, I did steal (still!) the blasted thunder. Bibigyan ko na lang points sa August yung sasagot. Joke lang. End of rant.

message 25: by Aaron Vincent (last edited Mar 24, 2015 02:58AM) (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments For me, it's about someone who have been badly burned before but he (or she) is not giving up on the chance that he (she) might finally be happy. It's more of a "Hello love, my old friend..."

Rob have several lines on the purpose and process of making mixtapes. It's going to be discussed later this week. Patience, grasshopper.

message 26: by Kristel (last edited Mar 24, 2015 03:12AM) (new)

Kristel (fanarchist) | 489 comments ANGUS: High Fidelity includes very specific guidelines for mixtapes (at least the movie did) so this is inevitably going to be discussed. I have some thoughts contradicting your assertion re: Falling Slowly, but as you said it'd be derailing the discussion.

message 27: by Aaron Vincent (last edited Mar 24, 2015 03:24AM) (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments I think it's okay to discuss the songs that were mentioned. Arguments on specific song selections are frequent on the novel so it is still within the bounds of discussion to have similar arguments here. But let's not get ahead on the discussion topics and themes from the book/movie.

NOTE: This activity is for members who have been active and have been attending events for at least 2 years. An alternate activity is setup for those of you who are newer members. If you're unsure which activity to do, please don't hesitate to ask me.

Over the last 5 years, we've met and 'lost' people who had been a significant part of our group's history. Just like what Rob did in the prologue about his exes, this activity will serve as a remembrance to our bookclub's ex-members.

I've contacted some of our "exes" and ask them some questions. Your goal is to guess who the ex is based on the answers they gave. It's some sort of a test on how well you know the people who have been part of our bookclub. Take note that I asked them to answer the questions either seriously or jokingly, especially on number 5.

Before the mechanics, the basic criterion for someone to be qualified as an ex is:

Someone who attended at least 5 TFG events and have been MIA for quite a long while.

All you have to do is read the interview I did with them. Base on that interview, formulate a guess on who the person I talked to. Send me through Goodreads private mesaging, text, viber, facebook chat, pigeon, smoke-signal your guess.

You have two options for guessing:
1. Give me one name. If it's correct, you get full 8 points.
2. Give me two names. If one is correct, you get 4 points.

Ready?

=========================================

Mystery EX No. 1

1. Describe yourself in 5 words.

Not-so-friendly. Imaginative. Sentimental. Bizarre. Emotional.

2. How are you?

Currently alive. Still struggling with this late quarter life and early midlife crisis. I constantly remind myself to breathe and live at the same time.

3. What did you like best about being part of Goodreads - The Filipino Group?

I was introduced to a set of people that made me realized I am normal, and they are a lot weirder than I am. And I know that I can always grab a book and have a bunch of fun bookish people to hangout with, if other things in my life didn't work out right.

4. Any fond memory you have of Goodreads - The Filipino Group?

I think it will always be the first day I met them. I had to travel alone to an unknown place to meet strangers, and it was never that hard to adjust with them. I wouldn't forget how they gave me a stack of books to cover because they noticed I could do it faster.

5. What happened?

Ok. I, like being on my own. I think relationships are messy and people’s feelings get hurt. Who needs it? We’re young, we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world; might as well have fun while we can and, save the serious stuff for later.

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Alternate Activity: TFG Profiler

NOTE: This alternate activity is only for those who are newer members of TFG. Newer members are those who are active for less than 2 years and/or attended 10 or less TFG events. If you're unsure if you're qualified as a newer member, please don't hesitate to ask me.

Similar to the ex files activity, this will be a test on how well you know the bookclub's members but instead of the exes, this will be about the active members.

Who is an active member?

Someone who participated or attended at least one of the previous F2F book discussions this year.

I've collected some data, thread comment, past activity participations, etc. Based on the information provided, you need to guess who the active member is. Send me through Goodreads private mesaging, text, viber, facebook chat, pigeon, smoke-signal your guess.

You have two options for guessing:
1. Give me one name. If it's correct, you get full 8 points.
2. Give me two names. If one is correct, you get 4 points.
