Combining two editions doesn't work

Hi,
I am a librarian and trying to merge two identical editions. I already separated both of them from any other editions, so that I can combine them together and then delete one of them. I tried combining them repeatedly since yesterday, but it doesn't work.
The classic note appears "Enqueued job to combine works. Large works can take a while to complete, please check back in on the status in 15 minutes.
But it never works." But it is never actually combined.

I had no problem combining the editions.

However, the entire process was redundant. These are print editions added by the bot with an ASIN and no ISBN, where there is another identical alternative, and the edition was not shelved.
This is exactly the case where we mark the edition as Invalid rather than delete it, which does not require any splitting and recombining.
