Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 400 comments I read The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan -- the main character is the child of Chinese immigrants to the US, and cultural differences in parenting norms/expectations are a major theme of the book. I liked the culture-clash aspect of the book, and the satirical take on the expectations of motherhood in the social media era, but I thought the book took an overly melodramatic/dystopic turn when the main character ends up in a "reform school" that sounded like something out of the Hunger Games.

My full review can be found here.

One of the main characters is Attila, a Ghanaian psychiatrist. He is visiting London to deliver a keynote speech.

I loved that character. I’m going to want to reread this book some day.

Grace | 52 comments Five stars for James by Percival Everett by Percival Everett. This retelling of Huckleberry Finn from Jim, i.e., James', point of view is fabulous. James by Percival Everett may be the best book I've read in 2024!

3rd book in the Harrison Raines Civil War mysteries. Raines is back in Richmond where old flames, haunts, and rivalries impede his investigation of the Confederate ironclad. Very good series.
