Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments This is a tough one. I kinda wish the Indian epics were in the Hefty/Husky thread. I am interested in them, the Ramayana especially, but it's hard to say in advance that I will be able to fit it in and participate... if I had a wider window to read it, I might be more comfortable committing a vote to it.

Abstaining for now... if the indians or the italians get the vote, then I will aspire to read along when the time comes.

Jen, any pairs that get at least one vote are up for the 2025 poll, just to let you know.

message 59: by Jen (new)

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments Yes I hoped you might roll them over. That is cool.

It gives a basis to build on. It's sometimes hard to come up with pairs!

The winner of the tie-breaking poll is: Two Italian authors living on islands.

Any pairs thar received at least one vote will be carried over into 2025.

I might not have much reading time next year. But I'm hoping to do Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Chinua Achebe at least.

Both have written relatively short works, Piyangie. How long is your course?

Three semesters cramped to one year, Rosemarie. I finish next fall. Glad they have short work that I could read. The Little Prince has been on my radar for a long time now.

That's an excellent choice, Piyangie. I've lost track of how many times I've read it.

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments Been having fun tracking down my books.

I've just ordered used copies of Family Lexicon by Natalia Ginzburg and Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon by Jorge Amado.

And on Open Library I have found the Japanese authors, Clarice Lispector, Colette, and Wole Soyinke. These I'll try to tolerate reading online since they're rather short. Maybe Deledda too.
Still hoping to get The African Trilogy: Things Fall Apart / Arrow of God / No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe or at least the first book. Hoping a cheaper used copy turns up...

Do others have their 2x2 reads planned out yet? :)

I generally don't plan in advance since my plans fail miserably after only two weeks. I find if I read more if I don't plan.
You've made some good choices so far, Jen.

message 71: by Kathy (last edited Nov 21, 2023 11:37AM) (new)

Kathy E | 2346 comments I plan but may not follow through completely. So many books, so little time.

I hope to read the 2nd book in the African trilogy, Arrow of God, and possibly the third book.

For Wole Soyinka, I hope to read his play The Lion and the Jewel. Thank you Jen for mentioning Open Library, where I found some of Woyinka's books. His book Aké: The Years of Childhood was published in 1981 so it's not yet a classic, but that interests me also.

I've read Family Lexicon by Ginzburg (also titled The Things We Used to Say) and enjoyed that. My local library has The Dry Heart so I'll try that.

For Grazia Deledda, I have an ebook of After the Divorce.

I'm planning to read Natalia Ginzburg's [book:The Things We Used to Say|430936] this year. Great to see that you liked it. She has been on my to-read shelf for a long time now. For Colette, The Vagabond is a likely choice as I quite liked Gigi.

Luís (blue_78) | 4613 comments For Ginzburg, I plan to read The Road to the City

Ah yea... I may also go for The Lion and the Jewel although I'm also more drawn to Aké. I don't know why I wanna shy away from plays, but maybe this will be a moment to confront that mental block.
Good to hear your thumbs up for Family Lexicon. I follow someone who just raved about The Dry Heart and rated it even higher.
Appreciate the Deledda idea. That one sounds interesting.

Sounds interesting! Adding to TBR. Thanks, hadn't read about that one yet.

message 76: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine | 397 comments I will probably start with the two "Y"s from Japan:
since I already have a book from each of them at home.
The Sound of Waves for Mishima and The Sound of the Mountain for Kawabata, both in French. I read Mishima The Sea of Fertility series and liked it.
It will also be my second book by Kawabata as I have read A Thousand Cranes. I did not like that one as much as the books by Mishima.

I like those series by Mishima!
