I read this a couple of years ago.

Heroine is a famous author but writes under a pseudonym. Her partner's horrible mother is dying to find out more about the girl. I think she has her office in the attic, and either the mother or a friend of the mother gets into the room and outs the heroine.

I think it's part of a series.
