Hi folks, I am retiring the old group spreadsheets thread. Although there was some great discussion there, it was mostly managed by two former moderators (Bryan and Art) who haven't visited the group in years. I'm also retiring the old google drive folder, since there were lots of unused spreadsheet copies that can't be removed.

I am starting this thread so post #1 contains relevant links and are easy to find for new members.

I've also finally gotten around to creating a master template of the H/N challenge tracker this group has used since 2018. Group members can create a copy of this template to track their own reading.

LINK TO THE HUGO & NEBULA BEST NOVEL GOOGLE DRIVE FOLDER:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folder...

This folder contains:

Master Copy: Hugo & Nebula Best Novel Challenge Tracker
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Keep track of your own reading of all H/N nominees using this sheet. In the "Notes" column of the Bookdata sheet, anything marked in blue that says "Read by HN" is one this group has already selected at some point in its history.

H/N Author Progress Tracker
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
You can create a copy of this spreadsheet to keep track of your progress in completing all nominated novels written by specific authors on our list.

Group Reading History
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1W...
This is a document that contains the complete list of monthly reads and challenges undertaken by this group over its history. It's updated periodically.

H/N Novella Tracker
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Still somewhat of a work in progress, this is a H/B Best Novella tracker using the template of the original Best Novel tracker for those who also want to keep tabs on reading this shorter fiction category. The group could conceivably support buddy reads or challenges focused on this list, but hasn't up to now.

If there are other spreadsheets people use they want to share a template for, I can change settings to give you editing permission in the google drive folder, just let me know. If there are other ways people would like to nerd out with tracking, suggest them here and we can collaborate on building any new tracking tools we want. :)

Thanks for undertaking & completing this, Kalin, I know we needed a general update badly. My own version of the tracker is indecipherable to most users, as I've created a lot of custom sheets. However, there are a few that I can split off to give people a couple other useful tools:

Multiple Awards - a table of all the HN books with the awards they've been nominated for and/or won - used to build the multiple awards shelf, but interesting on its own

Sorts - I've found it very useful to have a sheet of tables that sort all the HN books by 1) title - alphabetical, 2) author - alphabetical, 3) page length. Your author doc may take care of #2.

A couple other sheets I have are already incorporated into our threads: 1) themes, running back to the beginning of the group; 2) series, my full list which is segmented and posted into group threads.

Kalin, can you give me permission to add files to this new group, so I can add the lists above? Thanks

You should be good to go now!

There's a function under the "Data" menu that lets you change the sorting of sheets based on existing data, I just use this to sort the "Bookdata" by author, title, or page count when I want to, and then go back to the default (nomination year).

In my own spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... ) I actually added a new sheet for completed books and have it sorted by date read, going back even before I joined the group.

The Nebula 2024 finalists have been announced, and these two tracking document templates have been updated accordingly:

Master Copy: Hugo & Nebula Best Novel Challenge Tracker
H/N Author Progress Tracker

And both of the above templates have been updated to include this year's Hugo nominees. Scalzi is now in the leagues of the most nominated authors in Hugo history.

H/N Author Progress Tracker

Both of these group documents have been updated to reflect the Nebula finalists announced earlier today. If you use our group spreadsheet to track your reading you can add 6 rows to the bottom of your sheet and then copy/paste from the master template (linked in the OP).
