He wrote gothic mystery novels, where the uncanny lies close at hand (Uncle Silas, Wylder's Hand) and shorter pieces that were straight supernatural. Mention should go to the german romantic novelists for their superb tales of the uncanny, especially ETA Hoffman, from 100 years before the Edwardian greats
