Have you tried Sheridan Le Fanu? He wrote gothic mystery novels, where the uncanny lies close at hand (Uncle Silas, Wylder's Hand) and shorter pieces that were straight supernatural. "Green Tea," "Mr. Justice Harbottle," "Carmilla," "The Haunted Baronet.")

i was less impressed with Le Fanu, i thought Stoker was superb with Dracula. I anticipated so much more when reading Le Fanu's stories but it was a good 18 years ago, maybe i should return to them

Mention should go to the german romantic novelists for their superb tales of the uncanny, especially ETA Hoffman, from 100 years before the Edwardian greats

I wondered if the writer was Welsh — as far as I can see, he isn't but lives in Wales.
