Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Davis doesn't really get winter, but we've survived another atmospheric river - Los Angeles and areas further south got a lot of rain, some mudslides in the hills, and there is a lot of fresh snow in the mountains.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, a calm Friday at work, though didn't feel like I got through enough. Seemed dry at lunch, but was supposed to be heavy rain after work, so decided to just pop to co-op and pay extra for the cat treats (miscalculated how many of those I had left!), it started raining part way there, and I hadn't put on my coat with a hood!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Can't explain to cats - must have treats, I guess.

Or the ability to listen to them complain.

Hope you survive your encounter with cold and wet - the last thing any of us need is colds and such.

Jim | 21809 comments I suspect we live under an atmospheric river as we get a constant stream of lows come in off the Atlantic, pretty much every winter

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Your weather people may not be as desperate for ratings on TV as ours - ours make a big deal of these (and the last one WAS a big deal - California got a normal year's worth of rain in a couple of days in several places, and lots of new snow).

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, another bad night sleep, and couldn't have a lie in, as was at hairdressers at 9.45. She was very nice to me though, she put the heater at the side of me with a towel on it, after my hair had been washed, she put the warm towel over my shoulders, which was lovely! And asked where I go for my nails, she was surprised when I said I do them myself, and that they are real. Couldn't finish my book there though, there was a really sad part so didn't want to read that in public, so finished that when I got home. It was dry, so went to Lidl, we now have a months worth of cat treats! I foolishly didn't get eggs, as I thought I had some, and came home to see there were none, so had to go to co-op. I'd got a sandwich and coffee on the way back from Lidl, so had those first. Was supposed to be blitzing the house this afternoon, but didn't have much energy, so did a couple of important things, and will hopefully do the rest tomorrow. Lucy enjoyed having some cuddles on the sofa though, which isn't a bad way to spend the afternoon.

Wow, that's a lot of precipitation Alicia!

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments All went well. Had a lovely night in Sussex, good meal at the restaurant, sat by the open fire, watched a bit of telly and chilled. Then this morning it was off to the interment. That was also strange as the school where Dad taught which is where they are being interred, is the place I grew up. So then a quick walk round with lots of … I used to ride my bike down these stairs. I used to jump off this thing on my rollerskates, there’s my old front door … that kind of thing. I showed my lad the classroom where my Dad taught and he put his hand on the handle and asked me, ‘Did pops open this door every day?’ and I said, ‘yes, I guess he did.’

He liked that connection. It was fun bizarrely and we had lunch after and then it was bruv and family’s turn to stay at the family home for the night and we went home.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, struggled to get to sleep, but must have slept well as felt OK when I got up. Did a couple of chores, then realised it wasn't due to rain for a few hours, so thought I'd go for a walk to find a different pond I wondered if Mister had moved too, got to the top of the steps and realised the path was partly flooded and there were some girls struggling on the palets that had been put down to use as a path (and I've struggled on them previously), so decided to turn round, glad I did, bumped into a couple walking their dogs, at one point I was seeing them on a daily basis, but not seen them this year, everyone seemed happy to see me, even their male dog who is normally quite aloof! Few more chores when I got back, haven't done too much housework as little inclination, but now feeling a bit sore, so think I might have done too much resting! Though it is Feb and not unusual to have a flare in Feb. Glad I did some hoovering though, realised I hadn't turned the Feliway back on after the last energy session, no wonder Lucy has been extra bitey!

Glad the internment went well MT, and you got to share some memories.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Not possible to do too much resting. Adequate rest and sleep if possible are the foundation of getting anything done.

I slept better than usual last night - got much more done this morning than usual.

Looking at some drums I left out in the open on the 31st October, we've had 18" of rain since then.
And that's probably a minimum as some of our rain came in almost sideways :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, was tossing and turning from 3am, then at 5.30 Lucy walked in my room, screamed at me, then jumped on the bed, laid down on me and went to sleep! Then jumped up as soon as the alarm went off at 6.30. She's been odd since I got home too. We had a charity bake sale at work, got a lovely piece of mini egg cheesecake. It started off wet, but dried up late morning, so popped to Boots and Superdrug, came back with 2 nail varnishes from Superdrug, only meant to buy one. Still no date on when Lucy's medication will be available, but the nice woman in boots was looking at alternatives for me, the 70mg is available to order in liquid form, she thinks that could be easily worked out to 5mg, though she thinks it could be pricey. Will ring the vets this week for thoughts, or if they know someone who has some in stock, though I started getting a prescription when their usual supplier struggled a few years ago. Went to retail park after work to collect my parcel, and got a few bits while there, including some cat litter. Got A and L a box of chocs each, A was already giving me some leftover wax melts from some Mother's Day boxes she made at the weekend, sounds a good swap to me!

Wow, that is a lot Jim! And a lot of sideways rain here too! Glad you slept better than usual Alicia and got more done.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Thanks. I just got some tonic water, which a friend who has the same thing I do helps her get sleep without the interminable twitchiness which keeps me awake many nights.

Worth a try! I'm down to folk remedies (and waiting for the cure that's being researched for the long covid types) because I don't tolerate many of the prescription meds that are offered. Inconvenient. Cross fingers - I'll be surprised if it works, but one can hope.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments I have heard of tonic water helping with things like restless legs, think it's the quinine (sp?) in it. Shame I hate the taste of tonic water, I think most things are worth a try, as long as it doesn't interfere with any other medications.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, that day dragged! Had a nice start though, there is some kind of appreciation thing going on at work this week, so we all got a card and a lolly from the managers, not sure what others said, but mine said 'Thank you for being part of the team. We appreciate your smile, humour and friendliness. Thanks for the lovely way you are with our customers. Love, the managers', which I was really touched by. There was another consultation meeting, they suggested I apply to the casual pool, but not sure I like the idea of that, especially as there are no guarantees I'd get on the team I want, and no holiday pay. A decided to do a sale on the melts we aren't keeping ready for new ones to be made for next month, I got first choice on the ones left, asked for 14, though not sure she's going to take any money off me for them. Interestingly though, she asked my opinion on both the mothers day box and sale box, I suggested a higher price than she was going to go for, she went with my choice for the mothers day ones (let's hope they sell now!) and she went halfway for the sale boxes, that sold out within half an hour (ironically to my cleaner and her sister, who is now obsessed with them!)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Yay! Glad your advice worked out well Desley.
Alicia, maybe try magnesium? I have been taking that because it's supposed to help with brain fog and a side benefit was a big reduction in the restless leg shennanagins at night.

message 367: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I hate the taste, too, Desley - but will try it next twitchy night. Sleep is MORE important. Just hoping it helps - I'm pretty exhausted the next day when the sleep is that erratic.

I take a LOT of magnesium already, MT - doesn't seem to help. Think I do notice if I DON'T take it. The brain fog is unimpressed - I can see no pattern or correlation. ME/CFS is like that a lot. I used to take extra calcium with the magnesium every day until my doctor got concerned about my blood calcium levels - now I don't.

Micromanaging is such fun - NOT!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another bad night sleep! We thought we were getting on top of things and might get chance to do some of the other stuff, then we got asked to do a new task in our weekly meeting, so that's changed things! Got a phone call at 6.30 from the big manager, who is going on hol in the morning, but wanted me to know that she's been pushing to get an answer for me about my position, as she didn't want me to feel like I had to start looking for something else, she can' guarantee what I'll be doing, but can guarantee there will be work for me to do until the end of June, which is a massive relief, and I was very touched she's gone out of her way to get an answer for me, and to let me know tonight rather than either get someone else to tell me, or wait till she's back in a week and a bit. Very relieved I don't have to job hunt just yet, and who knows what will happen in the next few months.

I've said this before, but oral magnesium didn't do anything for me, but topical magnesium has helped so much with my bunion pain.

message 369: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Topical magnesium - that's an idea. I'm just a little uncertain about quantities that way.

If the tonic water doesn't work (I can measure out specific amounts of it), you and others have suggested the topical version.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, despite my good news last night, I still had a bad nights sleep, not sure I've had a good night this month! At least it wasn't too bad a day at work. Managed to use the neighbours paper bins after work to get rid of my cardboard, but think I might have got over enthusiastic and got rid of the delivery note for my new dresses, so fingers crossed they fit! I'm waiting for the vet to ring me back to see if they think the liquid medication would be suitable for Lucy, as she'd need a fraction of the liquid, it might actually be easier.

I think the gel I use suggests pea size (or at least I hope so, that's what I use!), works on my hips as well as my bunions.

message 371: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Good to know the size. Thanks.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments I did check when I used it last night, it does say pea sized, didn't notice the bit about massaging well to help absorption though, so will start doing that!

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I use it on my dodgy thumbs which, it turns out, are not arthritic … but something’s up!

Hope all is well. To my absolute amazement my kickstarter is now at £690 … so that’s £590 more than I dared hope I’d get! Mwahahargh. Everything’s a bit arse about face here, McMini has suddenly announced that he MUST go to see a band next Friday or he’ll die. We had arranged to got to the McInlaws. McMum is very unwell and I want to see her as we are unlikely to be able to visit again until well into June. But now it looks as if we will have to go at a different time to the one we planned, which means a I can’t go to a lunch I planned with my mates 4 months out. I’m so fucked off but McMini in a hissy in Scotland might be a bit worse. Urgh. Part of me wants to just say, look, we’re going on the Thurs, Fri and Sat and you’re fucking coming. Part of me remembers my parents dragging me off on holiday and all my mates stumbling upon a member of one of the biggest pop bands of the time on Cranleigh common and how I spent two weeks in Greece and they spent two weeks hanging out with our fave pop heroes helping them make a song. And part of me feels that because that’s the way my life went, every. fucking. time. I want to spare him the misery of always being in the wrong place, or looking the wrong way when the interesting shit goes down. Sigh.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, slept through till 4am, but woke up with a headache, dozed off then Lucy woke me at 6am. And had a tricky task to do today, my head was mashed by 3.30, I had to do my timesheet and ended up pressing buttons for ages trying to remember how to do it! Then thought we had an emergency at 4.30, and my colleague had finished at 3, so I was on my own, luckily one of our engineers was online and it all got resolved without him having to go out that late. My amazon delivery came today, but was on the phone, had hoped they would just leave it on the doorstep, but they took it to my neighbours, and they were out when I finished work, so they brought it round once they got back. A got chance to drop off my wax melts, and wouldn't take any money, she seems to have given me a box of 15, rather than the 14 I asked for, but the people who bought the sale boxes overpaid her which I thought was nice.

Ooh, that's a hard dilemma MT!

Great on the kickstarter - apologies for not getting to it yet. Life is unbelievable.

Sounds as if you're managing quite nicely, even when it feels frantic. It is always satisfying when an employee can do that, fill in the breach, and get it done.

Glad you don't have to worry about it until June for now.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, not sure I slept much better last night, was awake a few times. We had a lazy start to the day, then it was supposed to be dry till 3, so decided to go for a canal walk, then go to Lidl for shopping. However it started drizzling when I was on my way back along the canal, so just went to co-op, fed the ducks/geese, and had a couple stop for a chat and to get some pics of them. Still no Mister. Have done some chores, but not as many as I had planned. Tried one of my sample melts that A wanted me to try, as I've had that scent from somewhere else, and it is really good, will have to stop myself buying some, as I still have plenty from the other seller, it's a dupe of my favourite Molten Brown scent, Rhubarb and Rose. I do feel much better though, even if I've had no idea where Lucy has been all afternoon, certainly not keeping me on the sofa!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, didn't sleep too bad, woke up early, but at least without a headache. The forecast improved too, so did a half hearted attempt at housework, then went for a nice walk, saw what I assume were crocuses, which seem a bit early. Did contemplate doing more chores when I got home, but decided that I shouldn't push myself, so chilled instead, though did cook some pasta for lunch tomorrow, then realised I had no tinned tomatoes in, so used some tomato soup, and it went everywhere, so then had to do some unexpected washing! Vet rang this pm, to say they hadn't been able to get Lucy's meds from any of their suppliers, she did suggest swapping to steroids, but they are more frequent and need regular bloods, but she'd need sedating as that test requires a decent amount of blood. I told her what Boots had said, so she is going to look into the dosage to see if it is an option and get back to me. After tea, I remembered I still had the empty box for her tablets, so have looked up the manufacturer, and going to speak to them direct and see if they can suggest anything.

message 379: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments The manufacturer does seem a better option

I know that we've seen livestock medicines dropped because the weren't worth re-licensing under the EU regulations on this topic (which I think we still have to obey)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, a bit better night, at least I didn't wake up with a headache. Just over half way to work, car decided to tell me it needed fuel (looked like I had a quarter of a tank, so had planned to get some on the way home), luckily there were two petrol stations between where I was and the office, so called in one, but forgot what side I was supposed to put petrol in, so had to drag the thing round the car and it didn't work that well, so just put £10 in. Then there are flooring works being done in my building, they've been doing them the last couple of weeks, but must be closer to where we sit this week, it was so loud, one of our engineers popped in and commented on how loud it was, then he had to ring me about something mid afternoon, and I just couldn't think of words, didn't help it was really loud over lunch too, at least it didn't give me a headache like my poor colleague. Told the manager who needs to make sure I can still access the system about my extension, as I know she wanted plenty of notice and she's going on hol this week, she randomly extended my access to end Aug! Went to Aldi after work, went to make a brew an hour ago and realised I was supposed to buy milk, will have to use my emergency milk and replace it! Might have been OK if I hadn't made my bedtime coffee last night and knocked the glass over, breaking it in the process!

I really hope that isn't the case, but suppose if it isn't that popular, it might be hard to justify making it.

Jim | 21809 comments The problem is that retesting to new standards can cost millions and the company might just sell a few thousand pounds worth a year :-(

It is a potential nightmare. There is an argument that the system should never have been applied to veterinary drugs.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, slept through till 3, then took ages to drop off again, Lucy came and joined me at one point, then decided she needed the toilet and never came back! Better day at work though, we got through quite a bit, my manager is back now, so we had a little catch up this morning, then 121 tomorrow. Not sure how I feel about having one really, though they found out this afternoon that there has been a 14 day extension to the consultation period, glad I've been told I'll still have work after the 31st March. I didn't take much notice of Alexa telling me there was a 51% chance of rain, it was so heavy when I left work, popped into M & S for some Tutti Frutti grapes (going back on Fri for some hot cross buns), and by the time I got in the car I could wring water out of my hair! Decided that as I was so wet, and the forecast is for heavy rain tomorrow, I might as well get a bit wetter and call in co-op for some milk

Suppose that is where Lucy's meds are tricky, as they are a human medication, shame the 10mg doesn't come in liquid form.

I believe that why aspirin is becoming ever more rarified, which is weak because it's the only thing that works for me.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, slept through till 5am, so getting better, though not sure I feel it! Wet and miserable most of the day, did get a couple of dry hours, but by that point I couldn't be bothered going out! 121 been rearranged for Fri as we are in the office and can do it face to face, which will be better. Tutti frutti grapes were interesting, they taste a bit like lychees. Will have to keep my eye out for the mango grapes. Completely forgot to ring about Lucy's medication at lunch though

Didn't realise there were issues getting hold of Aspirin MT.

Are the tutti fruti brakes the long thin ones? I think we had a pager is those once.

I have noticed that aspirin is really getting difficult to buy although so far alka seltzer is still going.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, got woken up about 1am by heavy rain, then woke up early with a headache that hasn't shifted yet, so glad for working from home! Lucy was sick at lunch, which reminded me to ring the manufacturers, she said that it looks like it should be available in March, but she couldn't say when, feel quite lucky though, she said it has been out of stock for at least 8 weeks, so could have been a lot worse for us. Going to pop to Boots next week and see if I can set up some kind of alert, though to be fair, it's minutes away from the office. Have rang the vet for advice, as not sure we can wait till potentially end March. Manager finished early and said she was on leave tomorrow, so not having a 121 now, not sure I'm bothered! After work I tried on my dresses, one is lovely (ironically, I own that style in other colours, and kept thinking I could get away with a size smaller, but kept forgetting to try, and it looks much better in a smaller size), the other isn't, so went on my George account to see about a refund without my slip, and turns out you can ask to return to store, and they give you a QR code which you scan in store and it prints off a label! Plus I didn't need to rush, it's 100 day money back guarantee. Then decided as it was dry, I'd walk to the shops to see for bargains, as I wonder if not leaving the house is contributing to my sleep issues. Did quite well too. And vegan friend finally came to collect her milk that was delivered mid Jan (fortunately she'd already paid!)

No, these just looked like standard red grapes.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, not a great night sleep but at least only woke up with a slight headache. Very quiet day in the office, quite a lot of people were off work, but a couple of people in other teams I'm friendly with were in, so got to chat with them, which was nice. Had lots of random things come in that needing doing rather than what I actually was supposed to do. Decided to treat myself to a drink and cake from Costa, I decided to try one of the new hot milkshakes, but not sure I'd buy another one. No cake that tempted me though. Decided to go to Morrisons after work for hot cross buns, they didn't have the ones I wanted, so will have to go back at some point. The vet rang me back while I was there though, they have also rang the manufacturer and got the same advice I have about availability, but she is happy to see if the dosage of the liquid version will work, I just need to find out a bit more info from Boots on Mon for her to work it out correctly.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Glad you're getting somewhere with the meds Desley. My cat is over grooming, I think because he was itchy for a bit but now it's a) a habit and b) itching as it grows back. He's been on steroids for three years and I've just binned them. He seems quite calm and content so we are trying him on anti allergy food to see if that helps. He's on top of everything with his flea stuff. I'm tempted to go the other way and try raw food but we can give him 6 weeks on this stuff first. I've also started him on a supplement as he's a bit dandruffy. 🤣🤣 That's why, to be honest I think it's more likely that raw food with a better vitimin mix would knock it on the head but like I said, I'll give this a go.

The Kickstarter ended at £985 which was a bit of a thing. I ended it at 7 and would have got the full £1k if I'd ended it later. 🤦🏽 We live and learn.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, slept OK last night. G messaged to ask if I'd slept well and wanted a walk, so I said yes, we haven't had a catch up for a while. Did a new walk, but she hadn't factored in how much rain we've had, we couldn't do parts due to how muddy they are but looking forward to doing it in the summer. Wasn't enough to hit my step count though, so checked both shops for bargains, had a shower and food, then did a bit of housework, probably not as much as I should but always tomorrow! Jaw started hurting after tea, seems a bit like I had just before Covid, hopefully it won't last months like that did!

Yeah, think I paid £4.45 for it Jim and wasn't worth it. MT, please speak to the vet about McCat, steroids can't just be stopped in humans, and I'm fairly sure they need tapering down in cats too, or it can cause some side effects, especially if he's been on them for so long. If you try raw food, make sure you do the research so it's balanced enough and won't cause health issues. Great you did so well on the kickstarter.

Hope everyone is fine. Now I've finished the final draft of my latest novel, I have a little more time to catch up with the wider world.

Off to Cambodia in a few weeks and then retiring from work in 169 days.

Bring on the next phase of this crazy life!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, Lucy decided to wake me up at 4am by using the litter tray, then running in the bathroom so quickly I could hear her claws on the floor, scream loudly, then run a bit more. Was just getting back to sleep at 5.30 when she walked in the bedroom, screamed at me, then jumped on the bed and went to sleep! She didn't like me waking her up at 7.30! Forgot to take her supper away last night though, so couldn't medicate her. Did one of my Sunday chores, then decided as it was nice, I'd go for a walk to the lake, and treat myself to a hot choc and cake. Bumped into some dogwalkers on the way up, who told me how bad one of the paths is mud wise. Had a nice black forest hot choc and a strawberry and rhubarb slice I've just eaten. Saw the swans on the way back, but only the adults, eventually saw the cygnet on it's own, nowhere near it's parents though. When I was in the bird hide, I saw what I think were 4 Goosanders, they were doing some amazing synchronized diving, one would go under, then they all followed in seconds, and came up quite a distance along. Got back, had some food then had intentions of doing the housework, it isn't as good as when the cleaner comes, but I'm happy with 'cleaner than it was'!

Nice to see you Stuart, enjoy Cambodia, and the countdown to retirement.

It's always a good place to finish :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, woke up a bit early but felt fine, which was nice. Busy day at work and ended up working late. Had a weird experience though, manager of the potential new team had asked my manager questions about me, as she thought she had got her cat from me back in 2012, she came over, wasn't ringing any bells till she said the cats name, then I remembered her, it wasn't one of my kittens, it was the other fosterer in my village, but she was convinced it was me that had dropped her off, but I'm sure it was the fosterer, though she knew my name, the village I live in, and that I had fostered for CP, so I must have had some involvement, but not sure what! Went to Boots at lunch, the pharmacist worked out the dosage Lucy would need, it works out at 14ml, I was expecting smaller than that, getting 5ml of water in her is hard enough. I did forget to ask if they could let me know when the tablet version is back in stock though. Also means that if it comes in 100ml bottle, it won't last as long as the tablets, and a lot more expensive. At least it's readily available though. Have e-mailed it to the vet, who was doing ops today, so not sure when she'll get chance to look at it. I had planned to get a couple of things from Lidl after work, but was late, so couldn't be bothered. Also got a letter saying the claim for that car accident in May 22 is going to court in April, so will have to book a day off work to go for that.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another bad night sleep! Had a full team meeting in the morning, and a 121 in the afternoon, so not sure I got through much work. Went to the coffee shop in the building at lunch for a white hot choc with orange syrup, forgot to take my travel cup with me, the barista greeted me with 'where's your ridiculously large cup'!! It only holds 500ml of liquid. Remembered to go to Lidl after work, as I was tired, I may have come home with some alcohol filled chocolate eggs (bit smaller than creme egg sized), which are rather nice, might have to buy some more. Got amaretto and creme de cassis filled, didn't like the sound of the other two. Not heard back from the vet yet though, and Boots need 24 hours to order the meds. Lucy has been quite perky this week, despite me not medicating her on Sun and she's being fussy about eating food with her liquid painkillers in, so having to syringe that (luckily only 0.6ml)
