Typical. They probably already knew, I'm sorry to say - pig in a poke and all that. But they wanted to be the ones to decide who got to be asked to stay or transfer, instead of having the better workers all leave? Never know exactly what's on the minds of new bosses, but I hope this isn't ridiculously inconvenient for you right before Christmas.

How does that work? 'Redundancy' has a specific meaning in the UK in the context of jobs.

The closest I can think of is 'early retirement package' to encourage workers to retire at the convenience of management. Is that it?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another bright but cold day, I didn't twig that the drops on the car I could see would be frozen, so had to defrost the car, then sit in roadworks, so was a bit late. Had an interesting day at work, we needed to do a stock take, I thought I'd be helping manning the fort, while others did that but I went to ask a question, got intrigued at seeing the equipment and ended up doing some of the stock take, though had to deal with a couple of urgent phone calls as well. Plus side was we took the stock to our desks to record numbers, then take it back, so did a lot of steps and now know a lot more, we only got half way though, so finishing it next week. Treated myself to a salted caramel latte from Greggs at lunch, cheapest place I've tried, but not a bad drink, just a shame they couldn't put it in my travel flask. Called in M & S to get another bottle of Sloe Gin Fizz on the way home, it was on offer, but it's a 10 min walk up a steep hill to get to the car, so thought I better only get one! They did have a pie I tried at the beginning of the month that was yummy, so had that and some reduced veg for my tea. Traffic wasn't as bad as I thought coming home, but couldn't be bothered getting my petrol.

Kind of Alicia, but not necessarily retire, G took redundancy from a job in her 30's. More when the job is deemed to be no longer required, so they might decide that due to whatever reason, they only need 5 people in a team rather than 6, so one person will be made redundant, but there are strict criteria, it can no longer be first in, last out, if you have 6 managers, each has to be scored against criteria and whoever scores lowest would lose their job, and I think they have criteria on re-advertising that job so they don't get rid of someone they don't like claiming it's redundant, then appoint someone else shortly after.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments In other words, "Prove this is the best person to let go?" Sort of.

You probably have to work in the system to get all the nuances.

As the perpetually self employed I've only seen it from outside :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, woke up and phone said -3, have had to put the heating on during the day today! Got a couple of new things to do today and as we had all 3 of us in and working, we seem to have caught up a bit. Went out at lunch, the canal was still a bit frozen. Mister was on the bank, but very unsettled, not sure if it was the temp or some odd people wandering up and down with rubbish in a wheelbarrow (though have seen them a few times), he wasn't that interested in food, which I think the geese/ducks appreciated as I used the half bag regardless of who wanted it. Went and got another couple of bags, and treated myself to more tealights and wax melts (could have sworn I hadn't finished the Christmas bag I got the other year, but can't find it, so bought another one. Got the jeweller to fix my necklace again and a couple of bits from the cheap shop I hadn't got from B & M and home bargains. Did decide to go and do my bargain hunting after work, was bitter, but glad I did, they had a box of the expensive black forest mince pies reduced, they may have a frosting on, but sure they don't all need eating today! Had another energy saving session today, was 1.5 hours today, I reduced my consumption by 80% on the first one. As we haven't had much cloud the last couple of days, there have been some amazing skies, especially with a pretty much full moon.

Sort of, yeah - though the company I used to work for did always ask if anyone wanted to take voluntary redundancy first in case that solved the problem. Think it was so you weren't getting rid of the newest person when they were actually better than people who'd been there a while.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, very good day today. Woke up this morning, opened the front door for Lucy and noticed that there was a sprinkling of snow around, was not expecting that! Was on the phone to my line manager when I got an e-mail telling me I had an interview for the job, it was like the library one where I got to pick a time slot, they are a week later than advertised, so I went for the second slot on the Mon (11th) so I wasn't thinking about it too much. So my line manager is aware, first person to be told, and has booked me some time out next Fri for interview prep. Went out at lunch to feed Mister, he flew over quite quickly, and started off a bit more excited, then seemed to get fed up and walked away. I still used the half bag I had though, at one point my hand was quite low down and a Mr Mallard came over and swiped some, but then seemed to realise it was my hand and not the floor and jumped a bit - none of the mallards will eat off my hand, however much they want the food! Ground was still quite white, and looking slippy in places, so decided to get my milk while I was out rather than go out again in the dark. Managed to get car MOT booked, and Covid jab booked, though that is a week earlier than I wanted it. Logged on to check my payslip, my hourly rate has increased by 18p! And another random extra payment

Mister sounds stressed.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Good luck for the interview. We had snow yesterday too, although it was mostly melting. Now everything is frozen solid!

message 160: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Best of luck with the interview.

We didn't have snow, and indeed yesterday wasn't as cold as the day before or this morning.
Looking at the forecast we might have had our coldest night and the weekend could see rain

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, another bitterly cold day, just looked icy out, computer said -4, though my phone only said -2! Went out to feed Mister at lunch, as soon as I left my street, there was evidence of snow, I did the exact same path as yesterday and it was a lot whiter than yesterday! Mister had a loose tail feather, which I swiped, it's not as stunning as his other feathers though. He was funny, he would eat a bit of the food, then leave it, but as I got further down the bag, he was eating more, so wonder if there was something that didn't taste right to him? At one point a goose was eating off my hand and Mister pulled at it's feathers, I told him off, as he had stopped eating. Decided to check for bargains while I was out, as it was supposed to be below freezing again after work. Felt as though I got through more work today, told another couple of people about getting an interview, and they are very confident I'll get the job, hopefully working there means I'll know the right keywords to say!

Thanks for the good wishes.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, first of a weekend of craft sales, today's was supposed to have a Christmas jumper competition, I said to A that I only wear a red or green dress, but it depended on how icy it was, so she offered to pick me up, I feel bad getting a lift when she's only a 5ish minute walk away, but then I realised it was -3, so prob not a bad thing. Was a weird craft fair, not much footfall and just seemed like we were going to struggle to get enough to pay for the stall fee, then in the last 50 mins, we did 2 £10 sales, plus a couple of small ones, so ended up being our best ever fair! There was someone from last week who wanted more, and someone from the one A did without me has messaged asking for a box to be posted, both have said lovely things about them and think they will be regulars. Just as we got home, it started snowing, I decided I was still going to Lidl rather than let A drive me home. It isn't doing much yet, but it is supposed to be heavy overnight, so will see what it is like in the morning as to whether we go to tomorrow's fair. G went for a walk on the canal today and sent me a pic of Mister, who she said had been fussing, I am worried about him in this cold weather.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Congratulations on the sales!

Poor Mister - where do they go in the very cold weather? I'm so spoiled to be inside.

Was awakened this morning before 8 by the window washers - and they were at it forever. Now it looks as if it would rain - their work will be spotted if the wind keeps up.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments I'm not sure where they go Alicia, not sure I've ever taken much notice of how long you see geese and ducks on the canal, but will this year!

message 165: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Sometimes, if it's very cold, but the water isn't frozen, you can see them swimming automatically in circles (so it doesn't freeze), with their beaks tucked under their wings. I'm sure there's a limit to it, but if they have food, they have good insulation and can produce heat.

I still wouldn't trade places!

message 166: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Our area may be cut off by the snow. This is because the peninsular only really has one road out, and it passes along the edge of the lake district.
Actually being cut off isn't uncommon. If there is a road accident and they have to close the road, everybody can be faced with sitting in traffic for hours, or if the accident is in the long place, a several hour detour

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, what a day! Was snowing when I went to bed, woke up at 1.30, looked out of the window, was rather white with large flakes falling, woke up again at 5.30 and it wasn't quite as white, when I eventually came down at 7am, I could hear it melting, so we went to the fair, just set off earlier to be on the safe side. We had been told we couldn't park outside the building, as they wanted all the spaces for customers, but that there was a car park we could use that was a 2 min walk away. As we pulled up, there was a woman looking very lost, A said 'wonder if she's a crafter', I pointed out she was unlikely not to be, given we were on an industrial estate at 8.20am on a Sun morning when there was snow around! She said she couldn't find the cut through, so we tried the other direction, no joy, could see cars going back to the car park, so went back, they tried to find the short cut, realised we couldn't use it, so had to show us the long way round. Everyone else had dropped stuff off and driven round, we were the only ones carrying stock, so 2 of them offered to help us carry bags, which we were grateful for, it's one thing I like about the craft fairs, we haven't met anyone who isn't friendly and helpful. Got there, then couldn't find anyone to show us to our stall, luckily A left me with the bags and went to find someone. We were in the main room, which was a tad cold, but had a lovely pair of women behind us, she wasn't very confident, so we tried to convince her she has lovely stuff and would do well at the one we want to do monthly (ironically they had gone yesterday to scope it out, and they had stopped and chatted to us!). We had a stallholder buy from us before it was open, we had barely finished setting up, and it was a decent sale! We did really well, sold out of 3 scents, and nearly took £100, so our best ever one! A messaged one of the stallholders who was doing the regular one again today and apparently that was really quiet, so we were definitely in the right place! No cake, but I did get a new tote bag that has 'this is my book haul' printed on it, only realised after I'd got back and looked at her business card that she is an author. The woman on the stall behind us gave us a free angel keyring too, it looks very delicate so not sure I want to use it as a keyring! Despite the weather, the organiser came round at one point and told us they had had 7k people turn up, it was his first ever and he seemed very keen to do more! Luckily the short cut was open on the way back, so didn't have to walk quite as fair. Started sleeting on the way home, it is forecast to snow again, but it's rather wet outside, so hoping it can't stick, most of yesterday's has gone, and it was just slushy walking back from A's. Did have a nice bath to warm up and finished my book when I got home.

I've heard bad reports from your neck of the woods Jim, but wasn't sure if you were in the area cut off or not. no, I certainly wouldn't trade places Alicia, and will make the effort to go more with food, and if it gets too icy, I'll take a bottle filled with water and a tupperware container, sure I read ducks and geese need water with food as they don't produce saliva like we do to swallow.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Congratulations again on the sales - makes the whole effort much more fun. And your customers got their Christmas/etc. gifts early while they still had a lot of choice. Win/win.

Many/most animals make it through the winter (and hot summers), but it can't be fun or comfortable, and they have no opposable thumbs to build things easily - tough life.

I don't think disabled people like me would have survived in earlier times - gives one pause.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had a day off after my busy weekend, of course I woke up early and was contemplating whether I could get back to sleep when Lucy jumped on me! We did chill in bed for a bit though, then I did a couple of chores, and decided it was clear enough outside to go to the tip, so filled the car, got round the corner, then realised it was still quite slushy! Went to B & M for cat litter, which was out of stock again, then went for my blood test, was an odd conversation, handed over my bag, she said 'Des, can you confirm your date of birth' - I was a bit stunned as I'm not used to people I've never met before shortening my name without asking. Once she had done, I said 'have a nice day' and she replied with 'You too Des' - I did wonder if she wasn't sure how to say my name so opted to go with shortening it. Went to Asda to get my parcel and decided to get a few bits, went a bit crazy though, at least I should have enough of certain things to not go back this year! Seemed a bit clearer by then, so went to the tip anyway, there were a few bays cordoned off, so guessing they weren't safe enough, but managed to get rid of my stuff. Started raining on the way home, had to drive past the canal to get home, couldn't see Mister in his spot, so decided to drive to candle shop to see if he was around, rather than driving home to walk round in the rain, he was quite far over in the car park, and seemed to be coming towards my car as I parked, so I got out, told him off and shooed him back towards the canal, then felt he might be confused if I left without feeding him, so thought I'd get him a new bag of food, I had a bag in the car that I thought was empty but had about a quarter of a bag in it, not as much as I would have liked to feed him, but better than nothing, especially as he isn't used to food on a Mon, and he was painfully enthusiastic, so maybe there is something about the new bags of food. Had a chilled afternoon, I decided to cook something, I'd got a bag of reduced stir fry, thought I'd make sweet and sour, til I realised I only had mince and meatballs, so went with meatballs and tomato sauce.

I've had this sort of thing happen to me and ended up wondering if I'd met them in the past :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, was allowed to work on my normal team today, apparently they had a really busy day yesterday, not much new stuff came in today though. Got an e-mail about another energy saving session from 5.30, opted in as figured I should be home by then and get to unplug things, but forgot it was Tue, they had decided to put some traffic lights up that weren't there yesterday, so took nearly an hour to get home, so didn't get to unplug much for the first 25 mins, but at least I wasn't in the house to use anything! Did mean I didn't get time to do the chores I wanted to tonight though. One of the wildlife photographers saw some swans flying over to the lake last week, he went investigating and they are 4 large cygnets, he couldn't see if they were tagged, so no idea where they have come from, they seem to be sticking together though.

Yes, that also crossed my mind Jim!

More likely the young assuming the privilege of using your first name when it hasn't been granted. Not allowed when I grew up, now taken by one and all. Our generation got both ends of the stick.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, rather tired today, got woken up at 2am, turns out we had had a power cut and when it got restored, all the smart lights came on! In a way it was fortunate, I'd glanced at the alarm clock which seemed to be fine, but it had reset its brightness and cancelled my alarm! Didn't get back to sleep till about 4am. Woke up, went to let Lucy out and the cars were very sparkly, my phone said it was -2, but saw that somewhere a mile or so up the road got to -4.6 (though it is up such a tall hill that it can be raining in the village and turn to snow driving up that road). And of course, because I was tired, it was a really stressful day at work, with lots of tricky things - was supposed to sit down with someone at 3, realised at 3.40 that we'd both forgotten! Got an e-mail saying the hybrid working is changing from Jan, they want us in 3 days a week, bit gutted, but at least I am used to that. Went to feed Mister at lunch, gutted I forgot my phone, the canal was so frozen that the gulls were stood on the ice, looked very cool! Mister was in goose field, but flew over, he didn't have that much food but still got annoyed when the geese started eating the food off my hand he didn't want.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Morning, yesterday was another stressful day at work, didn't get chance to feed Mister as could only spare time for a short lunch and had to tidy the car ready for today - it was rather wet and windy though. Finished at 4 as we were trying out an evening craft fair that was in a pub, it wasn't good, one of the stallholders had her monthly order of 15 lemon lavender, that was our only sale, felt sorry for the organiser who had put a lot of effort into getting leaflets printed and put around the area, the weather probably didn't help. I got a sample of the new Frosted Rose in Wonderland melts though. Am hoping for a quieter day, as supposed to be having time for interview prep today, and need to finish on time as we are having drinks/food after work, and table is booked for half an hour after we finish, doing nails now and will do hair at lunch.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, slightly less stressful day yesterday, so we got to finish a bit early to get ready and go for drinks/food, which was nice, though I was glad I drove and didn't drink, the colleagues I gave a lift to didn't get home till 2am! I was in bed for just after 10! Took my sis and the kids out today, she gave me some free wax melts which is always nice. I did want to go and feed Mister first, but my nephew wanted to go in the charity shop, glad we did, managed to get 2 new coats for £6 and two free books, they got some free DVD's. The weather forecast was for it turning bad late afternoon, so she didn't want to be out late. Went to the garden centre on the way, who had two donkey's from a local animal sanctuary, they weren't being sociable though. Went to local market town, we just managed to get a table in Wetherspoons to eat, and the weather was turning while we were there. There was a Christmas Market and Santa's Grotto advertised, the only market we found was the normal one and Santa's grotto was an empty market stall with a Santa singing! Then we just got what we needed from B & M and Lidl and came home, the wind was getting bad enough that my car was being moved, at one point it sounded like something hit the top of the car, but we couldn't see anything when we got out to check it. Wind has been getting steadily stronger, and my sis's fence has been blown over, I've just heard lots of wheely bins blowing over.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Sounds like a good day with your sister - too bad about the non-existent Christmas Market.

We get some wild wind days here - can't sleep when it's howling!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, not as bad as yesterday, but still a miserable day, wasn't planning on leaving the house, till I finished cleaning upstairs, decided to have some lunch to discover I forgot to buy eggs yesterday! So decided to nip to co-op and if I was doing that, I better go and feed Mister. The canal was very quiet, there were just two male mallards and two geese, no sign of Mister, hope he's OK. Managed to get on top of housework, though annoyingly did break the brush I use to dry my fringe, luckily Amazon had one for next day delivery, so ordered to pick up from locker as will be in the office.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, interview was a bit mixed, had a 30 min excel and word assessment, which was awful, didn't manage to finish all the excel bit and had to rush the letter, so hopefully did well enough on that. Talking to colleagues after though, no one has finished the excel one, and they all work there, so not quite as worried about that. Then got asked 7 questions, only 6 were scored. One of the scenarios was very similar to something I've done while there, so they allowed me to use that (let's hope I scored well enough on that!) and two scenarios were very similar to what I did at the last place, so hopefully they went down well, though the other manager scoring me did cringe when I said that worst case scenario for hitting deadlines is working overtime. There are 3 positions (2 in another team), she said that I'd hear Thu/Fri as they had had a lot of interest. Did feel like another day where I didn't do much, and we had to try and finish stock take (didn't finish it, in the calendar again for tomorrow). Decided I deserved to nip into M & S after work, managed to get their new flavoured teas to try, can't wait for those, going to try them this week in case I want to buy more

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, very foggy day today. Completely manic day today, had some urgent things come in that meant we haven't had much chance to look at last week's backlog. Had my Covid jab at lunch, went to the pharmacy, and she took me in a room muttering that she was on a break, but felt she better do my jab as I had an app! Barely asked any questions, but one was 'are you OK for me to inject you' - not sure I'd have been sat there otherwise! Dropped the car off after work as it's having it's MOT tomorrow, and had to pick my parcel up from a locker, so had to walk near the canal, went to a bit that was lighter than the rest and sure I saw Mister and a goose, so hopefully he is still around. On the way home, realised that I'd seen something about a surprise energy session flash up on my tracker while walking away from my desk, but then forgot (and they don't show up like the normal ones), so I missed opting in, think it's the first one I've missed. Was on 5-6 and didn't get home till 5.55, so wouldn't have been able to switch anything off.

Thanks for the wishes.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, got a phone call this morning from one of the managers who interviewed me, I didn't get the job :-( She said there were 10 people (high for them) so it was strong competition and I wasn't far out, so should hold my head up high. She told me that she loves me, I have a strong work ethic, and that she was rooting for me to say a couple more keywords to get the job. She also said there is a job coming up imminently in a different team, she thinks I should apply for it, and she'll give me some coaching, as she won't be included in the interview for that. I'm obviously gutted, but this pm found out the person I'm covering for has put in another note till mid Jan (and then there will be nearly a year of annual leave to take!) so manager says I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, there may well be work after March at this rate, and I really don't want to leave them short staffed, so maybe it has worked out for the best. I've had such lovely comments from a couple of colleagues I've told, one said everyone loves me, and one said I'm brill (must remember those for the next interview!). Got a sore arm from my jab, luckily I was swapping my days to wash my hair, not sure I'd have managed it today, started feeling a bit drained about 5.30, but that could be the emotions from the job too. Car passed it's MOT no problems, only done just over 1k miles this year!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Disappointing, but nice offer of coaching for the next time. And it's obvious you're valued where you are and they will miss you when you take a more permanent position - plus a shot? Have a good rest, keep going.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, felt quite ropey today, so haven't left my house! Advantages of working from home, was able to chill at lunch to get through the afternoon, did contemplate asking to finish early when I started to feel worse at 4pm. My line manager has a secondment for 7 weeks in the new year, so asked if she could look into what would happen if I didn't go for the next job and see what happens with the position I'm covering, she got back to me this pm, her boss has said there is funding for my position until the end of March, they can't say if it will continue till they do the budget for next year, but a possibility. We are so busy at the moment, and there is a person in the other team going part time in the new year, and she's the one whose been showing me things, so even if the bloke comes back and we are up to speed, there will be stuff that needs doing, so she also said that I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, she also likes me and wants me to stay, so I think I'm going to see if he does come back next month and take it from there - suppose worse case scenario, I'm registered with the agency, and there might be other jobs within the council, even if I have to have a bit of time off between. Had to change my book challenge yesterday, might just manage it now!

Thanks guys, my team are glad they get to keep me longer!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, thought I was feeling better today, until I went to do some washing up at lunch and started feeling lightheaded and sick, so haven't left the house again today! One of my colleagues had an early finish today, had so many issues I needed approval for after she left, though to be fair, some of them would have needed my managers approval anyway. Then two urgent things came in 15 mins before home time, managed to do part of both. My line manager's manager rang me just before I finished, she wanted to let me know she was genuinely sorry I didn't get the job and got some nice compliments from her (going to have a long list for my 121!). She said that she knew I didn't really want to leave my team, and again said there was enough money and work till at least end March, and when they do the budgets in the next couple of months, she will let me know if there is enough money to keep me after that, as they don't want to lose me, so I won't be going for the other job. Another energy saving session tonight, and waiting for friend to pick up her parcel, I misread her message and thought she'd be here at 6.30 so didn't need for her to say when she was setting off, re-read it at 7, she said after 6.30, hopefully not much longer now.

Thanks guys, it certainly is!

Worry about it in the future - next year.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, managed to leave my street today, and still feel OK! Went to candle shop to get food to feed Mister, told her I hadn't been out for two days, and she said a couple had come in buying food yesterday for a duck that was wandering through the car park, that sounds like Mister! I'd be surprised if he hadn't been fed. Bumped into L's mum on the way home, had a little chat with her. Wrapped most of my presents before going to the hairdresser, had a nice time there, someone who works for my old vet was in, didn't get much of a catch up, but did her most of her conversation! Nipped to Lidl after, bumped into one of my neighbours and a colleague in there - was telling my colleague about the phone call I'd had yesterday (she had been nice enough to ring me on Wed and reassure me it's no reflection on me, and that everyone loves me), and turns out the manager who rang me rarely gives praise, so she said I'm doing really well if she's gone out of her way to do that, and she doesn't keep agency staff that aren't doing well. She was pleased there is still a position for me till I can get taken on permanently. Came home and decided to put my tree and candles up - I did accidentally break one neighbour apparently gave me (I don't remember receiving it, but one year I was saying I had no idea where it had come from and she said she bought it), but still feel like I have more out than usual, and made L's day by sending her a pic as she looks forward to it every year, then C sent me a video of hers!

Thanks guys - I'm definitely not worrying about it Alicia, I'm fine till end March.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, last craft fair of the year, wasn't worth going, did one sale at £10, table cost £12.50 - she could have had £11, but she did let me try the new scent for free. It was also really cold, they were offering free tea/coffee because it was cold. One table gave up at 12.30 because they were cold, one gave up at 1.30 as she wasn't doing well, we started packing up at 2.20 (3pm finish) - we aren't going back next year, it was on yesterday too, and a few had done both days, apparently it was worse yesterday! Got some nice paw print earrings though. We are having Christmas jumper day on Tue, so did some Christmas nails today, have done red striping tape to make a candy cane effect, but it isn't going to last till Tue, started lifting despite one top coat, have done a second, but not sure it'll last.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I wouldn't know where to start picking ones to participate in - you must have a lot of experience with that now.

Do they tell you how they did the previous year (if they had one)?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments We are going off how well we have done - we do like to give each one two attempts in case the first bad one was a one off - this is an odd venue, it's an auction house upstairs, cafe downstairs with some space that they allow craft people to put tables in every weekend, so it's not necessarily people coming to look at a craft fair, it's a bit incidental. We have one regular monthly event, I'd rather not do every weekend except for Nov and Dec.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Every weekend would feel like a job - and had better pay like one.

It's all academic - I can't do one anyway - but you and MTMcGuire make it sound like a lot of fun when it's going well.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had some nice compliments on my hair, and one of the girls asked where I'd gone for my Christmas nails, she was a bit shocked when I said I'd done them myself! I have lost 3 stripes though, hopefully won't lose more in the morning when I wash my hair, and have time to replace them! Feel as though we managed to catch up a bit, though something happened over the weekend that means we might start getting a lot more calls. When I left there was just me and the big manager in, so stopped and thanked her for taking the time out to ring me, she said she was glad it helped, and that she will keep me as long as she possibly can. She might not remember, but she also said she has some nail varnishes she no longer uses as she has gel nails now, but that she'd bring them in for me! Went to see my surrogate aunty after work to pick up a present for C, as I suspect she's got me something, and we are meeting up on Christmas Eve, had a nice chat with her, as well as getting licked to death by her two pugs!

They can feel long days, and ironically I'd rather get up early (well, same time as Mon-Fri) on a Sat than a Sun! But, it gets me out of the house, and I do enjoy some of the people we get to meet, I'm not sure what I'd have done some of the weekends without the fairs.

Jim | 21809 comments craft fairs do seem a bit hit and miss. I think this time of year there are just too many.
The other problem is that they can be a bit the same. You often see the same people selling the same things so why does the punter keep going.
All sorts of organisations, often local charities, decide to 'have a craft fair' in the hope they'll make some money and without thinking what sort of trade the stall holders will have

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, that was a nice day at work, we had our last team meeting of the year, my colleague on maternity leave won an award this month, but baby was only 10 days old, so she couldn't attend, so they arranged a local councillor to come and present her with the award and certificate (and colleagues liked the fact she brought baby in!), and we had some nibbles and a quiz, plus an update on our working days, Friday is the only day they can find space for us. Someone wasn't happy with the idea of Mon, Tue and Fri, but I'm used to doing that, and can go back to doing shopping on a Fri. We got a card from the big managers with a lottery ticket in, don't know if they all said the same, but mine thanked me for my efforts and help, which was nice, then we had a team lunch, my manager gave us all a little present and card, and mine said 'thanks for your hard work so far, and hope to be working with you this time next year', which I also appreciated, much nicer than my last manager, not sure I got anything from her last year! Had my feedback, I did have to hold back a chuckle when one of the main things was 'you should have talked more'! Not sure I've ever been told that before, I did say that I was conscious there was a time allocation and she said that I could have gone over and it wouldn't have been an issue, so at least I know for future, and she said as long as she's not involved in the next job, she will still coach me beforehand, and one of the other women said they were gutted I didn't get the job, and offered to give me some help on excel next time. Went to Aldi after work, got a 'no turkey crown' - considered the 'no gammon joint', think I was OK with gammon when I ate meat, but didn't like the look of it! So at least I have some food for Christmas Day now, as well as way too much party food, barely got it in the freezer.

Yes, all valid points Jim - was a bit the same fundraising, most charities like to go for tombola's as they are good money makers, but when there are 4/5 of them at the same event, it ends up diluting everyone's takings, unless you have something like a chocolate tombola, or guaranteed to win a prize (though the amount of times I've won something at those that would have cost me less to buy!). We are trying to do a couple of regular events to attract regular customers. One thing that annoys me about craft fair is going and having people like Body Shop there, and I did hear the woman I bought my earrings from on Sun say she buys them, so that to me isn't right for a craft fair, you haven't crafted anything!
