Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Here we seemed to go from horribly hot to winter California cool temperatures (in this part - it's a huge state), and we've had a bit of much needed rain, but not enough.

But I don't get out much, so it's all just what I see through my window, and that's been grey.

I will try to be more proactive once I get through this section of the book, get out of the building, maybe use the pool, but everything and everyone has kept me from getting this chapter done, and now I'm going to focus on what I want.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, actually feel like I made a dent in things today, got numbers down slightly even though colleague had a couple of meetings, she has shown new colleague a process and she seems to have picked it up well, so hopefully she can start doing some work, though seems we don't have her for the full week next week. Set off to go to coffee shop at lunch, my street was really slippy and the other street looked worse, so turned round. Looked better after work, so went to chippy, had a couple of dodgy patches. Looking forward to a long weekend though weather forecast isn't good. So far my tempting black Friday deals are cat food and TV subscriptions!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Slippery slopes not good. We have rain; farther north in California, and Oregon and Washington states there is a lot of rain. Hope some of it ends up in the mountains as snow - for next year's water supply. This is a big agricultural state.

Jim | 21809 comments Raining here, apparently we currently have Storm Bert

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, didnt want to get up this morning, so had a lazy start to the day. Very stormy today, we've been fine, but local market town (that is literally 5 miles up the road) have had a lot of flooding, quite a few road closures and saw one pic where the canal, towpath and river at the side of path just looked like one large body of water. A was training at work today and only just got back before the road was closed at 3pm. I made myself go out, glad I did, got sandwich, home made cheese and onion pie and carrot cake from bakery (though too much frosting on cake, have only been able to eat half), had a nice chat with someone in Sainsbury's, then went to coffee shop, she has a new mince pie syrup, had that in decaf white mocha (we decided it would be better in white). Done a few chores but not as much as planned.

Jim | 21809 comments Sounds like a good day :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Morning, woke up to wind and rain battering the window, A picked me up, it had briefly stopped. This is the third time we have been to this venue, we got lost again! And Marvin's mum had left him at home again. Was the best of the three, and I got some cordial to try and they had an offer, so got one for C's birthday. When I was making my flask of tea, realised I'd used the last teabag, then forgot to buy some on the way home! Did notice a new discount store has opened (I walked home the same way as yesterday!), will check that out tomorrow.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Thought it was Monday, but it was actually Sunday (long story), so I got an extra writing day.

Progress is slow, but I am going forward, so I'm happy.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, was dry but windy when I woke up, we have had some rain, which probably hindered local market town, appears there are still road closures there. Had my asthma review and flu jab this morning, went to check out new shop after but it was still closed at 9.50, did get my teabags though. Have just alternated between housework and chilling after that.

Extra writing day has to be a bonus

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments My assistant leaves in half an hour, and it's our Thanksgiving this Thursday, so I won't see her until a week from today - I'm going to get some of these writing logjams under better flow.

Several days in a row when I don't have to go or do anything are a big help - what I write is complicated, and I keep having to restart.

It's good to get your necessary jabs out of the way - they do make the flu less virulent if you get it. One more thing off your list!

message 1111: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments We had our flu and covid jabs. Ironically we don't think either of us has ever had flu, and that is from long before they offered jabs.
The weather is moderating here, but things are still wet underfoot

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, woke up feeling drained, I don't normally react to my flu jab, but colleague made the point that I already wasn't 100%. Heavy day at work, was showing new colleague something new that is similar but different, so we both felt drained after that. She has picked things up quickly, so keeps asking for stuff to do which us really hard, other colleague was tied up part of the day, she did thank me for stepping in. Numbers seem to be stabilising, but still too high. Had a longer lunch as got to chat with some old colleagues, so that was nice. Felt very drained walking back to the car, so just popped to Iceland, picked up something for tea, when I got home it said oven cook for 60 mins, was too big to go in air fryer so I microwaved it! Also got car MOT booked in yesterday.

I refused a flu jab many years ago and was ill from Nov to Apr, always have it now

Necessity is the mother of improvisation :-)
It's surprising how often this sort of thing works

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, had a rubbish night sleep. Despite a physio app this morning and a 2 hour meeting this pm, numbers are down, which is good. Physio went well, even though I've not been great at my exercises, I can stretch further and scored better on my test, so she is going to suggest postponing my face to face app, which is fine, they are looking at a new system where as long as you are seen/spoken to once a year, any others can be when patients feel they are having a flare. Like the idea. Called in lidl for more cold tablets, throat is getting sore as my cough is getting drier, but forgot I needed milk so had to go back out after work.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, another rubbish night sleep. New colleague is still doing well, so the number that got over 50 last week is down to 30, hopefully can leave her to it for a bit tomorrow and try and get emails down, they have crept up this week and one of the engineers is behind with his paperwork. Was hoping to have a full hour for lunch but manager rang as I was about to go and then felt too late to have an hour, but did finish on time. Did a couple of chores, made my last hair app of the year, got my prescription and booked my hotel for NYE, so feel like I'm getting somewhere

Jim | 21809 comments For a sore throat I'd suggest honey

But Dave Swarbrick, singer and fiddle player for Fairport Convention, used to recommend port.
Apparently a lot of opera singers take it as well

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Whisky and green ginger wine (think it's called a whisky mac?) sorts a lot of ills

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, slept through till 5ish, must have dropped back off as the alarm woke me, that's a rarity! Booking department rang this morning to check the cancellation request was correct, it sounded like the bloke earlier this year who had to escalate things for me, was impressed actually. Forgot my breakfast, so went to coffee shop and got crumpets, then when I went at lunch, they'd had a staff change, which threw me! Trying to explain who the other person was was tricky as out of 4 of them, I only know one person's name! The morning went well and got through things, afternoon didn't go quite as well, but ended the day with numbers lower, one is lower than rhe beginning of the month, but other is higher, but feeling better about it. There had been an accident on the motorway, so roads were bad, I walked over to Aldi, got A's alcohol and a couple of bits, so didn't sit in too much traffic.

Ooh, good excuse for Port, i do like that.

message 1119: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Apparently the alcohol acts as a disinfectant, and Port is a little stronger than normal wines.
In theory you should hold it in your mouth for a while, even gargle with it before swallowing it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, first of two craft fairs today, had a slight headache when I went to bed and woke up at 3 with it. This is our last of the year at our monthly venue, it was dead and our least successful there this year. I did win two prizes on the tombola, my Christmas burner and new carpet freshener. Was odd saying have a good Christmas and see you next year in November! Got home early enough that I could leave my stuff and go round to the Christmas light switch on and help Lucy's rescue. Had a go on two guaranteed to win tombolas, got a selection box and can of pop! Then had to go and buy sugar, decided to get some chips on the way home, felt very stiff. Forgot to say yesterday, Evri delivered a parcel and said it was in my safe space, couldn't see it so wondered if neighbour had taken it in but his lights weren't on. Started raining after a bit so thought I better check where it was left, pic was on top of the wheely bin, went to check, opened the bin and found 2 parcels, not sure what is weirder, the pic showing one parcel and two being in the bin, or the fact that my bin was empty - it was bin day yesterday but bin was only a third full, so u didn't put it out!

message 1121: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments They have to deliver - but get away with all kinds of things. My daughter had a package delivered, with a photo 'proving' it, in the vestibule of a building that was not hers.

Putting things IN a bin with a lid would keep them dry, but that they call it your 'safe space' - weird!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, think I slept through till 7.15, then woke with a minor panic that I'd overslept! Second craft fair of the weekend, somewhere we've never been before, in a steam museum that houses the world's largest working steam mill engines, they steam the first Sun of the month and had a band, so a lot of people, we'd done better in the first hour than all day yesterday, though it slowed down after that. Took enough to make profit for the whole weekend, so we are looking at doing both events there next year, and it wasn't a badly priced cafe. Tables were a different layout, so i did get chance to read. G messaged about lunch asking if I wanted to go for a walk, told her where I was, she randomly asked if there was a band on. She turned up just after they finished the first set, told her when they were next playing, she said they'd go and look at the engine then come back for a car freshener. She turned up 1.5 hours later when we were just putting the tablecloth away! We did sell her a car freshener though! My last Asda parcel came while we were out, wondered where I'd find that, but luckily on the doorstep. Quite tired now, glad I'm off tomorrow, though got a few things to do

Also Alicia, I've never set up a safe space with that delivery company! They normally leave either on the doorstep or behind the flowerpot

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Funny how they say things you know are not true, precisely for that reason: YOU know you didn't.

And it's probably not worth the time to straighten them out. YOUR time.

I'm that way with my medical records. EVERY single time I go to a doctor's appointment, an After Visit Summary appears in my online access - and has things that didn't happen, were not discussed, and I disagree with and never said.

But they have made it almost impossible for ME to correct the records or to get the doctor to amend them - so my medical record is rife with inaccurate, old, and fake 'information' about me.

The only good thing is that most of the time if you end up at a hospital in an emergency, they don't believe anything they read, and do all their own tests, and get it wrong a DIFFERENT way.

Maybe we'll survive anyway.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments They only show you your records if they're required to by law anyway.

Sounds deliberate sometimes.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, felt quite drained when I woke up, luckily I was off today and it was early enough that I could lie with my eyes closed for a bit. Had dentist appointment which was a bit of a disaster, there had been a communication error and I'd been booked for a lost filling, not the crown prep, he'd already been running late so I'd been there for 30 mins! Then went to take clothes back to Asda, and decided to get a few bits while I was there, queue was awful. Wasn't in the mood for much when I got back, so did bare minimum housework and had a bath. Lucy then got up so I could make the bed, really looking forward to getting in it, new teddy fleece felt lovely! It's wear it orange day for White Ribbon campaign, have had a go at doing their Ribbon logo on one nail, couldn't do right hand.

I've complained about things being inaccurate on my medical records but nothing gets changed

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Good afternoon!

I recently changed doctors from a surgery in the town where I used to work , to one where I live.
The previous surgery was terrible for trying to get appointments, and the one I have moved to was also mum’s doctor and I never had problems getting appointments for her.
I filled in an online application to register and so I have a record of my recent vaccinations and appointments.
But it also says that I am a moderate smoker (10-20 per day) and that I was offered and refused smoking cessation advice. Neither of these are true. I am going to try to get these incorrect facts removed when I change my address with the surgery.

Today I am feeling under the weather with a cold and sore throat.
My cat Barney who had been staying upstairs except when he wanted food has started sitting with me and sleeping on the bed again.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, lovely sleep with my new sheet. One of our numbers is finally manageable, emails are over 300, couldn't get them under, and felt like I was just flitting around and not achieving much. Nails were a hit though, might even get on the intranet! A couple of people asked who had done them, as they thought they'd been done professionally and shocked when I said I did them! Found a dress that had peachy tones in too. The Tropic lady we see every month is doing a monthly stand in our building, so popped down to see her at lunch. Popped in m and s after work, got a couple of bargains, then needed petrol, got a couple of bargains there too. Tongue is a bit sore after my dentist app, think they've left a rough bit, will have to see if it settles.

Randomly wrong thing to have on your record Janet. Hope you feel better soon and at least you are getting more Barney cuddles

Aargh! So frustrating - because that's important for anesthesia and for lung diseases and makes doctors look at you funny if you still smoke in this day and age.

I'm starting to think that sending in a summary of what is wrong with the visit notes as soon as I read them is my easy way of getting my words into the record - and not force me to go through their energy-wasting procedure to change things.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, Lucy woke me up at 5.30 with some weird snoring that sounded like a vibrating alarm! Cough has been worse today, had to do a lot of talking and had a coughing fit after pretty much every conversation! Had a 2 hour meeting, let colleague do most of the talking. Had a full hour for lunch as needed to collect something for A, as I opened the door, vegan friend was just getting out of her car with a belated birthday present and early Christmas present, we were both shocked to see the other! Faffy afternoon, did get emails under 300 though but still don't feel like I'm getting through enough, but finished on time. Forgot to say, I do walk past a house that still has Halloween decorations up, makes me smile.

message 1133: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Not being able to stop coughing - and not sleeping because of it - makes life very tough, and people avoid you in case you have the plague.

My sympathies. My daughter who had pneumonia took forever to get rid of the lingering cough. The first couple of nights she coughed so much she had no voice - so we texted for many hours.

What ended up helping her was cough syrup with codeine in it - which she reserved mostly for sleeping times. Codeine is a good cough suppressant - do you have trouble getting it in your NHS?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, slept through till 3.40 and not sure I properly got back to sleep. Cough has been worse and has to do more talking than planned. Feel quite rubbish too, so have only left the house to put the wheely bin out and come up to bed earlier. Lucy has been very clingy.

Oh, i didnt know that Alicia, I've been takimg cold tablets but my normal painkillers have codeine in them, did take one before as they were closer to me, and going to take an anti inflammatory

Boring but true.

message 1136: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I just checked, in the UK "Codeine linctus to be reclassified to a prescription-only medicine because of risk of abuse and addiction"

This happened earlier this year, so you could get it from your doctor, or perhaps it's one of the things a chemist can now do a prescription for?

When I was a child I had a lot of problems with coughing and it keeping me awake. The doctor mixed some sort of syrup for me and even when he retired, I got a bit bottle of it that lasted well over a decade. Then, some years later I went with what was left in the bottle and asked the chemist if he could make me up some more.
He cautiously sniffed the bottle and commented, "Not if we both want to stay out of jail." :-)

message 1137: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I remember doing the same with the prescription cough syrup for the kids: hoarding the last bits so if one of them was sick, I'd have something in the middle of the night I could give them until their pediatrician saw them/gave the sick one a new prescription.

It was preventive gold.

I'm very cautious with narcotics, but sometimes you need them.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, despite waking myself up around 2am with a coughing fit, I feel much better today, even if I don't sound it - spoke to someone this afternoon who is on 24/7 oxygen and said 'you take care angel' with how I sounded! Forgot breakfast so was naughty and went across the road to Greggs, got a vegan sausage sandwich, was OK actually. Went to coffee shop at lunch, they had a new winter menu, wasn't overly impressed, might try tiramasu latte or after eight hot choc at some point. Didn't get through as much as I wanted, but numbers are much better, one is nearly down to normal! Was asked to chase up my references, turns out the HR woman at the last place left! Hopefully the alternative will sort it out, will be nice to be permanent by the end of the year. Got in our weekly newsletter twice, one of just my nails, one a team pic, get on more pics than im used to! Went to retail park after work for cat litter, then Aldi, did act like I wasn't going there again this year! Got another present too.

Oh for the days where medical people would make up cough medication, before my time but the person who used to own the chemist in my village was known for that!

message 1139: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Husband picked up - I have no idea where, but he went to his cardiac rehab at the hospital across the street (was wearing a mask!) - some kind of bug. Coughing and sneezing - I'm staying away from him! He's conked out right now - slept most of the day, which should help. Hope it's not anything serious.

Neither of us had been sick in ages. We don't get out of the apartment much, which helps.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, slept through till 5 before waking up with a coughing fit, very snotty today too. Last craft fair of the year for me, we were initially worried as there was a stall directly opposite selling 3 melts for 50p (ours are 50p each) and snap bars for £1 (ours are £3), all proceeds going to charity, we saw a couple of people look between the two and say 'that's for charity ', took over an hour for our first sale, which was enough to pay for the table! Picked up after that, and a few people buying a decent amount, so we ended up taking more 10-2 today than both days last weekend! And I've placed my Christmas present order. Wasn't keen on the cake, the stall I wanted wasn't there so a rare fair where I bought nothing! Very stormy, had a scary moment driving home when something bounced off the windscreen. Haven't done much since, decided rest was important.

Oh no, fingers crossed it clears quickly and you don't get it

message 1141: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Glad you had a good day in spite of the weather.
I must admit I cannot see why charity stalls sell so much cheaper than others. After all they're trying to raise money for a charity, not shovel stock out of the door quickly

message 1142: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Hope you stay well and your Husband gets over it quickly

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, woke up at 1ish with a coughing fit, then kind of slept till 7. Felt OK, but decided not to do too much, did a long to do list, picked the essential stuff off it and managed to do one extra, with some rest and fun things like sorting out what TV to watch. Car is having MOT tomorrow, dropped it off at lunch while it was dry, then called in candle shop to have a chat, was too long, it had started raining while I was there and got heavier on the way home. Thinking of going to the chemist tomorrow.

I suppose if they've had things donated, its all profit and our cheapest charity shop is the most popular, they've had to move as they outgrew the first building! But surely making that bit more isn't a bad thing.

Thanks, Jim. It's involved to get Paxlovid, so I'm hoping I don't need to at all. He has it, has taken his first two pills.

We don't have a car - he biked to the pharmacy. Stubborn man. He then said, after one trip, that he now understands 'post-exertional malaise', one of the worst ME/CFS symptoms - he STILL has no clue, because it can last for days. But I restrained myself, and just said, "Try to remember how bad it feels!"

His worst symptom has been a very sore throat - he is quite miserable. I hope the Paxlovid kicks it fast. We're trying to stay distanced.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, woke myself up again about 1am coughing, so have taken it easy today, still been quite windy. Garage rang about 11 as car needed 2 new tires and they needed permission, said yes and good job I did, turned out they failed the MOT! Went to chemist, he just sold me some different cough medicine, tastes awful. Have remembered to book my covid jab too.

Hope the meds work and you stay well Alicia

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I was intending getting my flu jab but had been waiting until I was less sniffly, instead I have ended up with a cold that is starting to go now after just over a week.
We missed most of the storm at weekend, my nephew in Wales was OK despite the strong winds but my sister was without power from Saturday morning.

message 1147: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I have the plague - am on Paxlovid (which tastes horrible), and surviving for now.

This retirement community requires us to quarantine - but drops food off by our door - so we're okay.

I thought I was going to avoid it, but it finally got me (SOMEONE I know didn't wear his mask when he left the apartment, I'm guessing). Since the incubation period can be up to two weeks, it could have been the ONE time I went out...

I don't think there's any way to know for sure unless you catch the virus in someone while it's active, and sequence its DNA (RNA?), so we'll leave that one unproven.

It's as miserable as I thought it would be, and my worst symptom is a huge deep sneeze which turns my lungs inside out, and hurts.

Oh, well!

I'm sure everyone has their story, but this is my first time. OUR first time. One gets a little cocky. And then the virus sneaks in and it's GOTCHA!

They say being vaccinated and boosted and taking Paxlovid all makes it less worse - I'm glad we have all that stuff, because it's definitely living up to its reputation.

Mary Hi all!
Looking for new book friends. Please feel free to add me and I'll add back. I like most genres of books to read but my favourite would be thrillers and fiction books.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, slept through till 6 before waking myself up, have coughed enough to make myself feel sick a couple of times and a bit lightheaded! Went for coffee with colleague to Starbucks, had a gorgeous eggnogg latte, but even though we get a discount, it's really expensive. Another battle today to get emails under 300, new colleague wasn't able to help much. Had contemplated going to m and s, but left with new colleague and colleague from another team I'm friendly with, we were all parked near, so walked up with them, which was nice. Sat in traffic on the way home, then nipped to Lidl for 4 things, so didn't get a basket, and ended up walking round with my chin balancing things!

Sorry to hear you caught it Alicia, hopefully the meds will prevent it being too serious.
