Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, started the work day wondering where to start, made myself a to do list and had one of those lucky days where people answered and so got lots of loose ends sorted by lunch, though afternoon wasnt quite as good! Had to go to co op at lunch for milk, was cold after work so didnt go out again.

Ooh, well done Alicia!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, that was not a fun day at work, tried dealing with things and couldn't get much cleared, then 2 urgent things came in, so we did one each. Had some interview prep at lunch, and having an extra session in the morning. Had to work a bit late, it was drizzling after work, but decided i needed to clear my head, so went bargain hunting, got a sandwich for tomorrow's lunch.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Have had a difficult month; everything that could go wrong - did! Sigh. And it was crowned with a trip to Hereford - rain, rain and more rain. We could hardly see through the windscreen. Several bad traffic accidents, long queues of traffic, diversions (only to be rediverted) and so it went on. Following day was reasonably sunny and even warmish. Things have got better day by day - visiting great friends, sunny days and finding new places we'd like to visit again.

And, sorry Jim, here in my little corner of the world the sky is blue, it is unseasonably warm and the only rain we had was overnight - most kind of it.

Chin up - the good days will come again... ahem! I'll hide now.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Today has been dry here so far Jim - yesterday was non stop heavy rain.

I've done a little bit more sorting, but the amount left to do seems to be increasing somehow.

Not reading much but have been listening to audiobooks borrowed from the library. I have Richard Osman's fourth Thursday Murder Club book to listen to next. I also have some Terry Pratchett discworld that I have from Audible. The only ones that I don't have are the Rincewind ones, apart from the first, because I'm not keen on the narrator, and the Tiffany Aching ones.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had a rubbish night sleep and feel like I'm starting with a cold. had my interview, and while I wouldn't say they were wasy questions, but they were all around things i do, so had lots to say, and got in stuff i wanted to. Then got my charger PAT tested, so was about 11 when I started work, there was someone in who rings me a lot but never met her, so had a chat (both colleague and manager told me to take time after the interview), started work and there had been an issue, so helped fix that. Emails are over 100, the other part is in double figures after clearing some and I'm on my own tomorrow! I was just packing up when manager's came back and asked for a word, i got the job! I did swear! So very relieved. Popped in m and s on the way he, got some cake.

So glad you won't have to worry about this for a long time now, maybe ever.

Cake sounds like a perfect celebration.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, had a rubbish night sleep and was on my own today. Glad I went in the office though, got such lovely comments, even though some people barely know me! One said he knew I was going to get it, and one person I met for the first time yesterday (spoke to her a few times) gave me a hug. Not too bad a day work wise. Did some food shopping on the way home.

Thanks guys, I'm not planning on changing jobs there again!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, slept till about 3am, then struggled to get back to sleep, on the rare Sat i had a craft fair and had a 7am alarm set! Luckily it was raining so A offered me a lift. Craft fair went well, was the first they'd organised, some people complained as they didn't sell anything, but there were people walking round. A treated me to cake, i feel uncomfortable taking it, but trying to accept it as a way of saying thanks for giving up my time. Treated myself to 2 pairs of earrings (only meant to get a second pair of butterfly ones, but she had Halloween ones), and some wax melts. Won a raffle prize, it wasn't as advertised so the organiser went and swapped it for me! We also got given a happiness bag. Forgot to say yesterday, went to coffee shop and favourite barista was working, told her how happy I was to see her, she said she asks the others if ive been in, she is now working Fri, and that will hopefully be one of my office days, so will get to see her. Wasn't sure what to drink, she suggested mixing syrups, so ended up with mint caramel latte, was really nice.

Well, was working in chronological order Jim! Thanks

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Non-coffee drinker here - but whatever makes you happy!

My husband is a connoisseur - makes it from any one of his many mixtures of beans, which he grinds himself - so I could have it special if I could drink it!

Taste is a funny thing.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments On my second espresso here :D just waiting for Storm Alfred or whatever it's called to hit. It's really dark this morning, no sign of daylight yet!

message 1022: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments The storm hit here early morning, and was wet when I went out to feed cattle.
To be honest it wasn't desperately heavy rain. We had heavier rain last week. The wind isn't special at the moment, in theory it's supposed to increase overnight whilst slackening off tomorrow before dawn.
But yes it was dark

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Yesterday was a cool but dry day, so I went out for a walk. Saw a little deer in a field. I’ve no idea what type of deer it was but it was a similar size to the sheep in the next field.

This morning it has been raining heavily, but that has cleared now and it is sunny. The forecast is still saying that it will be windy, butI am going out walking when I have finished my coffee (apologies to all you connoisseurs but I only like instant with plenty of milk)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Stopped raining here in the south east, very windy, choppy sea, I wouldn't want to be in a boat. Not too cold. Hope storm Ashley isn't as bad as forecast for the north west.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments What does it say about weather distribution in the current world when I envy you your heavy rain, and am jealous of Vancouver, British Columbia, because they're about to get an atmospheric river?

The commonality is WATER. People didn't settle in the driest places they could find - they settled by rivers and streams and lakes. Well, in most of the world. Literal lifeline.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, been very wet and windy, so apart from pitting rubbish/recycling out, haven't left the house. Woke up early a couple of times, managed to get back to sleep, Lucy tried waking me up at 7.10, told her i couldn't get up, so she laid on me, then i had to wake her up at 8.30. We then had a lazy start, had a decent amount of energy, started upstairs and unfortunately run out of energy by the time i got to the kitchen, so that still needs a good clean, but happy with what i got done, and then had a nice nice in the bath. Wind started to get up about 5.30, but not heard many bins blowing over.

Muntjac?
Common in England, especially the South East. Somebody told me that on the M1 and other motorways heading north they often spend the days hiding up in the roundabouts, coming out to graze at night. Normally nocturnal but they can be active at any time of day.

I'll put the photo of the deer that I took.

I've also had to look up what an atmospheric river is.

Yesterday afternoon was quite breezy but sunny after the heavy rain of the morning so I had an enjoyable walk. It is coming to the last week of the Leisure Service walking activity, there are some more events planned during the remaining time as as well - a taste of orienteering on Thursday for example. I might have a look at that as I will be nearby when I take the car for a winter service.. I have managed to visit just over half of the boxes, some of the nearby ones many times.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, that was a tough day, we had a 2 hour meeting about transferring to a new system, it's great to be able to have input, but he wants it from a really basic level like 'open email attachment', so took a lot of thinking! And took time away from doing work, so numbers are just increasing, emails are higher than I've ever seen them. We are hoping someone from the new team can help, but they don't have access to our program or where things are stored, so need to wait for that to be sorted. Had put my fleece sheets on yesterday, felt like I slept through but back was stiff, and a 2 hour meeting made that worse! Went to the shops after work which helped.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments You'll catch up - new stuff always takes more time, and new people need so much!

I know you like things cleared away at work if possible - that's part of why they like you!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, another day where urgent stuff came in and took time away from the backlog, not helped by one of the systems being temperamental for a few hours which slowed us down. Had an eye check up, the woman who did the reading chart complimented me on my nail colour, then again on a near perfect score (one eye was perfect, other got 2 wrong), she had to walk towards the chart as the letters got smaller as she couldn't read them! One of the consultants had a 2 hour delay, so they offered refreshments, that's twice, very unusual! I didn't wait too long, she said the inflammation is pretty much clear, so got discharged, just waiting for the other clinic now. Got back in time to pick up another awkward issue! New phone has arrived, hopefully set that up at weekend.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, that was a long day. There was an event in our building that we had a stall at, I stayed behind to do some work, and just went down for 40 mins or so. The amount of noise was distracting though. Had a little chat about it after the event, then someone decided we needed to consider something, so that conversation went on till 5.20, then chatted to someone from another team, so the plan to go to retail park went out of the window, just popped in Iceland to get a ready meal for tea. Wasn't going to bother with Sainsbury's, but did as had nothing for tomorrow's lunch and got a reduced sandwich.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Think you're in the wrong discussion Val. You could try here next time please - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, that was a day! No idea why sitting ringing 35 people about the same thing was so draining! Got another 15 to ring tomorrow! Had a nice compliment from someone from another team though, she apologised for ringing me all the time, she said its because I'm so good at my job! People suggest ringing me, she asked if I get the same from other departments and I said yes, need to stop being so helpful! She said they should all get me something nice for Christmas. That was a nice end to a tough day. Went to retail park, while tempting, I was good and only got one box of chocs, not two (others are limited though, so might get those next week!), then even though it was late, went to Sainsbury's and got another reduced sandwich, done really well the last two weeks.

message 1037: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments With compliments like that I think you deserve at least one box of chocs and a sandwich :-)
Nice to see you being appreciated

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, very glad it's Friday! Wasn't quite as bad today at work, but still tired after the previous 2 days. Went to coffee shop at lunch, they had new autumn drinks, so decided to have Bueno hot chocolate in one of their cups so I could have the cream, choc sauce and crushed hazelnuts. Got a bit of chocolate sauce on my chin, and drink was threatening to spill over, ended up having to get in a very full lift that included our Chief Executive! Was a conversation starter (he works on my floor!). Got to finish on time at least.

message 1039: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I agree with Jim - and you deserve those compliments. Just don't let people take advantage of you to the extreme of interfering with YOUR work.

If it gets too bad, offer to teach a quick seminar on doing what you do so that other people can pick up THEIR share of the load.

And, as I keep seeing, 'No.' is a complete sentence.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, did not want to get up this morning, even when Lucy was screaming at me! Took my sis and kids to a village about half an hour away that was doing a spooky trail, they had a map with 31 locations where you had to find words to guess a saying. Niece hasnt been well this week though, so we couldn't do the full trail. We ate at the pub you could get the maps from (turned out to be the end!), but they had a street food van in the car park, so limited options and only niece liked her food! We ended up st one of the other places, kids had ice cream and we had hot drinks, sis was disappointed with hers! Nipped to retail park on way back as sis needed something for tea, they didn't have things we both wanted so nipped to Morrisons, then after dropping them off realised I needed eggs so nipped to Lidl. Not been fit for anything other than sitting on the sofa since

Luckily Alicia its generally people asking a question which helps them get things right so causes us less work, though i did do more for one person this week than i should, gave that back yesterday with contact details for them to follow up on. I always tell them I'd rather them ask if they are unsure, than have a go, get it wrong and me still have to speak to them! I do like the thought of no as a complete sentence

message 1041: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments As long as you are comfortable with your policy, Desley, and not feeling resentful, it is your professional judgment, and the right thing to do.

If it bothers you, you'll poke at it and find something that works better. Sounds like you're pretty good at figuring things out.

And it does take more time to clean up messes that should never have happened.

Glad you and your sis and kids had a fun spooky trail. I never could do those things - don't enjoy getting scared on purpose. At Girl Guide camp, I used to sit out those campfires that had ghost stories.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, didn't sleep well and didn't want to get up this morning. Did a half hearted clean up stairs to focus on the kitchen, got tired after 30 mins, had a little rest but could only do an extra 15 mins, so not all clean, but way better than it was, though front room looks worse! Then set up new phone which took a while and not signed in everything yet.

It was tame, just looking at houses that were decorated and finding clues. I thought they are too young for a ghost walk

message 1043: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments That sounds a lot better than ghosts jumping out at you - much more civilized.

Take care of yourself - housekeeping needs to be done, but it does consume energy.

We got a call this morning that our five-year request for a different cleaning time had been granted - and starts today! 1:30 Mon. afternoon is infinitely (not exaggerating) better than 9am Tuesday morning - we are very late getting to bed, and it has been torture getting up early on Tuesday every other week for five years.

In exchange, and because they are not ready to make changes en masse for other residents, I have promised not to tell anyone we've been granted the change. And we'll have 5 min. less cleaning time. Minor points, both, but the time change is exceedingly welcome.

It was costing me two writing days every two weeks, so I hope it will help a lot.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, had another 2 hour IT meeting, we had hoped to cover 4 things and didn't finish the first 1! At least we have 3 weeks till the next one. Brain struggled after that though, not helped by numbers getting higher. Got congrats from one of the team leaders who has been off, and heard today i got the job, she said she was very happy i had. Had rained most of the day, but was dry after work, which was good as needed milk. Got some good bargains too.

Good you have finally got a new cleaning slot, hope it helps as much as you are hoping

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments It was great - then my assistant came (she was sick last week), and did a WHOLE bunch of tasks that had gotten delayed, from laundry to breakfast quiches and pills for a month - and I am ready for tomorrow to be a WRITING day - if it all goes well.

I'm so exhausted by the small tasks that HAVE to be done that it gets in the way of writing, and then I come to resent that...

Just watering the plants on the balcony takes her ten minutes and me a day of my life.

I'm happy to report that the COFFEE plant we've been babying in our only window with a little bit of eastern exposure for five years has FLOWERED, fertilized itself, and produced so far about ten coffee BEANS. If that's not an accomplishment (I didn't manage to kill it), I'll eat my hat.

NOTE: I don't drink coffee or like mocha - spouse gets all the fun.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, another day of not getting enough stuff done, started the day with someone else telling me they were made up for me getting the job. The new team leaders shadowed me for a couple of hours this afternoon, she was really surprised at how much work went into it, and how much repetitive stuff there was, and some stuff I feel we don't even need, it was good as she is thinking of ways it could be streamlined and organising some extra training. Forgot my coffee sachets so had to go to coffee shop, didn't want the fancy hot choc with someone shadowing me though. Had a chat with one of the managers, they are relaxed about things like office days and on top of our wellbeing, she told me to make sure I didn't work too late. We've had a pay rise agreed which will be backdated to April, I should get that again and means I'll be starting the job on more than was advertised!

Glad your assistant got a decent amount of stuff done for you, really hope you get a good writing day. Good news on the coffee plant

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Wow - your job is going VERY well. Congratulations - and back pay is such a nice reinforcement to words of praise.

I have had a decent writing day, thank you, interrupted by falling asleep like a log without even closing the blinds, and low blood sugar needing to be relieved - or else - by eating peanut butter from a spoon, and then a low-carb chocolate protein shake.

I think I used up the day's brainpower and then crashed hard. It's been a while since I've done that. I may actually finish Pride's Children: LIMBO one of these days!

message 1048: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Does seem that you're well and truly getting your feet under the table at work Desley :-)

Peanut butter from a spoon solves so many problems. I know somebody who took peanut butter, rolled it into balls and dipped them in chocolate so when the chocolate set she had peanut butter in dark chocolate sweets :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, struggled to get to sleep last night and tracker says I got 5.42 hours sleep! Did do a few silly things those morning like forgetting to get my stuff from my locker and have told two people morning when it was after 1pm! Numbers are still increasing, hopefully tomorrow we can have a full day with no meetings, then we are short staffed for 6 days! Had physio this morning, she was pleased with my progress even though I said I hadn't been able to do many exercises with my eye, she just wants to see me one more time before my rheumatology app, then maybe in 6 months. Popped in m and s on way home, got some tea.

Glad you had a good writing day, hope you dont pay too much for the low blood sugar, i do like peanut butter from the spoon
