Nidhi Kumari | 320 comments Lesle, how many authors one member can support?

message 4: by John (new)

John R Lesle, I'd like to propose Patrick MacGill, the Irish journalist, poet and novelist - a fine writer in a range of genres. His most famous books are probably Children of the Dead End and The Rat-Pit.

message 5: by Jen (new)

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments Ohhh. How does this work? Can I already give a supportive vote? Well I’m not sure you nominated DH Lawrence but he’s been high on my TBR list as far as classic authors go…

message 6: by Luís (new)

Luís (blue_78) | 4599 comments I'll support D. H. Lawrence, Faulkner, Sinclair Lewis, and Rebecca West.

My thoughts that I have listed in message one are not suggestions they are just ones I have run across throughout the year, that I thought seemed interesting to me.

So I will make DH Lawrence one of your suggestions Jen.

All suggestions have been added and support for D.H. Lawrence notated.

This is a good start :)

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments How about some black writers? I personally am interested in James Baldwin and Zora Neale Hurston.

I’m new in the group, not sure if they’ve already been focused on plenty in the recent past.

How about Langston Hughes?

message 14: by John (last edited Oct 07, 2023 06:45AM) (new)

John R If they have not previously been covered by the group, I'd also like to propose Iris Murdoch, Upton Sinclair, and Thomas Wolfe.

All updated into msg 2.

I have not heard of Landston Hughes. I looked into him a little and would like to spend a little more time researching. Thank you Rosemarie! Unknown and never delved into!!

His poetry and prose are amazing, Lesle.

message 18: by Jen (new)

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments Oh yes. I would guess Langston Hughes is the biggest name as far as literature associated with the Harlem Renaissance. It could be you’ve heard some of his verse not realizing it was his.

Tim wrote: "Doestoevsky"

Please review rules. Author thread is only North American and United Kingdom. The rest fall under Rosemarie's thread for Authors from Around the World. Plus I can find him currently in the Short Story Thread and at least 8 times in others that are still open. So I think he is a pass for this request of Suggestions.
Thank you though :)

Msg 2 has been updated several Authors have moved forward to the top 12.

We got 4 of the 12!

message 32: by Jen (last edited Oct 08, 2023 09:23AM) (new)

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments Damn, no takers on Hurston, yet a lot for Faulkner. They could be very interesting to compare, as southern gothic writers of the same era but different gender and race.

message 33: by John (new)

John R I'd like to propose another author please - John Galt - a fairly prolific Scottish author of the 19th century. (He was also the first Superintendent of the Canada Company from 1826 -1829).

I'm guessing that the group won't have covered him previously.

message 34: by John (new)

John R Could I also add a supporting vote for Rebecca West please?

Are we also including authors from North American countries other than the US and Canada - Mexico, Caribbean islands, Central America and Greenland?

I will support Zora Neale Hurston.

John R Pam wrote: "Are we also including authors from North American countries other than the US and Canada - Mexico, Caribbean islands, Central America and Greenland?"

Greenland????? I know Trump claimed he was going to buy it or trade it for Puerto Rico - but the less said about him the better - and Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

message 39: by Jen (new)

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments I guess Puerto Rico is a US territory but not a North American country so it shouldn't be included. So the countries of North America would only include the US and Canada...
I didn't know about this crazy statement by Tr*mp about Greenland! Yes, let's not talk about him. I come to Goodreads for FUN haha...

Would there be any interest in Joan Didion's older works? For example, Play It As It Lays or Run River...

Jen, I add a supporting vote for Joan Didion - we'd probably only be able to include about 3 of her books, but that's good enough for me.

Yes Pam.
I did state "Authors from North American or United Kingdom"
Which actually is a mind typo. Should state "America"
Not stated was Country.

Who would trade Puerto Rico for any other island anyways. The poor thing is still quite devasted. Part of the US but with no real support or acknowledgment.
(As I shake my head and dumbfoundedness!!)

Sorry, debated on posting anything.

John - Even though Greenland is part of Denmark, it is considered part of North America, which I didn’t realize until I queried North American countries. I looked for suggestions for Greenland but couldn’t find anything.

Oh I had assumed we are speaking culturally, not actually geologically. Afterall, there is a separate thread for Latin American reading which includes literature of the Caribbean islands and Central America.

Yes, it's a really interesting one - part of the continent of North America, an autonomous state that's part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and is also a territory of the European Union. Its population - mainly Inuit - have European Union citizenship. It's been politically and culturally linked with Europe - especially Norway and Denmark - for over a millennium. As you would expect, the Scandinavians have been very enlightened "rulers" but America has become very interested in it lately..... (cue theme from "Jaws").

Maureen (maursbooks) | 16 comments I support Iris Murdoch and William Faulkner

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments I’d support Flannery OConnor.

Unfortunately a quick scan of Rulfo doesn’t reveal anything in English so I guess it wouldn’t be an option for me…
