Note to Goodreads: Please don't delete this one. I am not a robot and we need a topic for each book on the Goldsmiths shortlist.
Not sure I can read it - arrived 30 mins ago, I opened the book and it fell open on a Lemond/Chambery reference, which as you reference in your review is the most traumatic purely sporting event of all time.
Trigger warning on this link but a picture of the offending bike: http://classiclightweights.net/wp-con...
Nice thought that Lemond himself describes Sean Kelly as “one of the greatest one day riders in history.”
Just starting this and I’d forgotten quite how influenced the author is by Jon Fosse. Which is interesting as there aren’t many authors who seem to have followed his style (cf say Sebald) so closely.
I'd forgotten how much so - indeed had forgotten I read her first book not knowing she was a Fosse fan but realised within a few pages (and before the character started reading her novels). It's almost a bit unoriginal - except as mentioned I can't think of another author who does follow his new route on the Satnav (to use analogy on another thread) and she does have her own thing of a) rather dislikeable narrators b) the clues drip-fed into the text (e.g. the 4 deaths early in this one where you think "hang on husband + 2 parents = 3").
How did I miss she had another novel out and from a publisher I follow!
Not sure - it was me that read her first novel and did not mention in the Goldsmith speculation but I do t take the blame this time.
