This year during the spring and fall semester, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of military integration through the passage of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 and President Harry S. Truman signing of Executive Order 9981.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 and Executive Order 9981, Military and Veteran Services will be collaborating with the Edwardsville Public Library and Glen Carbon Centennial Library to host an author talk with Mary Cronk Farrell, following the community reading of her book Standing Up Against Hate: How Black Women in the Army Helped Change the Course of WWII.

Award-winning author Mary Cronk Farrell writes compelling history books about courageous unknown women who faced extraordinary danger to help shape American history. Standing Up Against Hate: How Black Women in the Army Helped Change the Course of WWII is a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People and her latest book Close Up On War: The Story of Pioneering Photojournalist Catherine Leroy in Vietnam received several four starred reviews. For more information about the author and their publications, please visit www.MaryCronkFarrell.com.

The event is open to the public, and all participants will be given a free copy of the book to read at their own pace prior to the author talk event while supplies last. The author talk event with Mary Cronk Farrell will be hosted online via Zoom.

To request a free copy of the book, please contact SIUE Military and Veteran Services at 618-650-5425 / veteranservices@siue.edu. A limited number of copies of the book are available.
