The great war for Nesta and Cassian from acosf, and I've thought this was the PERFECT match for so long. First of all, there is obviously a war going on in the book, but beyond that, I interpret the song to be more about how someone's internal struggles affects their relationship rather than external forces, and this is perfect for nesta. She is dealing with a lot of mental health issues and a struggling not to isolate herself from everyone who tries to help her ("spineless in my tomb of silence"). When her friends and family try to help, she viciously rejects it and lashes out, pushing everyone away ("tore your banners down, took the battle underground").
Everyone in the beginning has kind of given up on her, except for Cassian. In the book, they say "keep reaching out your hand" to say how Cassian is trying to reach out to Nesta and help her through her internal struggles ("you drew up some good-faith treaties"). Initially, Nesta rebuffs everyone's efforts and continues to isolate herself despite Cassian trying to help her. She willingly self destructs and does things that will affect her negatively long term, like drinking and sleeping with a lot of people to cope, and even though she knows it's bad for her and wrong, her mental health issues make it impossible for her to care or want to put in the effort ("I drew curtains closed, drank my poison all alone").
No matter how much Nesta seems to rebuke Cassian's efforts to help, he never truly gives up on her or sees her as any different. Even if she says or does things that hurt him, he never actually see her in a negative light because he understands how much inner turmoil she's in, unlike some of the others, like Rhys ("soldier down on that icy ground, looked up at me with honor and truth").
Finally, at the end of the book, Nesta is able to move past some of her issues and learn to let people in and let people help her. She accepts the love and support of Cassian, and they both accept the mating bond and are as strong as ever by the end ("I vowed I will always be yours, cause we survived the great war").
this is the best taylor song x book couple match ever and I will die on this hill.

I DO NOT WANT TO JOIN IT.
IF YOU SEND ME AN INVITE I WILL BLOCK YOU AND REPORT YOU FOR HARASSMENT.

- "Safe and Sound" gives me same/similar vibes to "Hanging Tree" from "The Hunger Games".
- "Look what you made me do" reminds me of yandere characters. Immediately had to think of Finé & Iris from "Scarlet", and Akari from "The executioner and her way of life".
