I forgot to mention that this discussion is moderator free.
Also, I've read this book already, and I'll be joining in on this discussion. It really is a fine choice for October reading.

Starting the reread now, through the first five chapters. This book screams Halloween read, although it's definitely a crime novel.
Strange connection that no one in this universe would care about except for me: On the second page there's a mention of Von Stroheim's Greed, which I do plan on watching because I'm a huge Von Stroheim fan and I haven't seen this one. It's his take on Norris' McTeague: A Story of San Francisco, done in 1925. I looked up the film at RogerEbert.com, and discovered mention of a drama critic by the name of Idwal Jones. That name meant nothing to me the last time I read this book, but in the meantime I'd read a story of his, "The Third Interne" in Polar Horrors: Strange Tales from the World’s Ends which was disturbing enough to make me put the book down for a while.

Finished. This is one of those books where it's much more suspenseful the first time because, of course, you know all of the tricks the author plays on you during the first reading.
What a good book!! Sorry that no one is here to share their thoughts because it is truly discussion worthy.
