Welcome to October’s Non-Fiction Book of the Month Nomination Thread! Please follow the guidelines below when nominating.

1) You are allowed to nominate a maximum of 4 books for each month's BotM. You may nominate books of the Bible AND Christian non-fiction books, such as Mere Christianity, by C.S. Lewis. (Lily may change this later when she returns, but for October, this is what we'll do.)

2) If someone has already nominated a book that you wanted to nominate, please "second" it! I will only be picking the top books to vote on in the final poll--one book of the Bible and one NF, so the more total "seconds" a book has, the more likely it will be selected for the poll. (I am not sure how making a poll for this will work--we might need 2 polls.)

3) If you want to nominate books *and* “second” books, you need to make sure you do not exceed 8 in total AND that you nominate no more than 4. Some examples:

• If you nominate 4 books, you can only “second” 4 books.
• If you do not nominate any books, you can “second” 8 books.
• If you nominate 1 book, you can “second” 7 books.

4) Also, please do not nominate any books that we have already read in the past twelve months. (This is new to F&F, so the only NF book we've done so far is the book of Romans.)

5) I don't *think* we need content guidelines for this thread.😊

I will send out a poll for all of us to vote on based on this thread's nominations approximately 5 days after the date of this thread's creation.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask them below! Happy nominating!

?? Is this new??

Catherine (semi active) | 1371 comments Besides having Romans as the nonfiction BOTM for July/August, I think it is! I think Sharon and Elijah were talking about it in the Romans thread.

@Ellie, not really new. Lily set one up for Romans in the summer and Elijah was asking if we were going to do it again. Taz had said Lily was also going to include a non-fiction book too, so I gave it a whirl.

And nominate: The Kingdom, The Power, & The Glory by Chuck and Nancy Missler. It’s the most profound amazing theological book I’ve yet to read

I second The Screwtape Letters.

(I already have a Bible-reading plan I follow, so I won't be doing that with the group.)

Catherine (semi active) | 1371 comments Oh my gosh Screwtape Letters is so good!! Yes, you're write...LOL I was going to write out an explanation, but I'm tired and I got kind of lazy, so here's a short summary from Britannia: "Written in defense of Christian faith, this popular satire consists of a series of 31 letters in which Screwtape, an experienced devil, instructs his young charge, Wormwood, on effective strategies for tempting the human being assigned to him and making sure he continues on a steady path toward damnation."

I actually woke up thinking to myself, “Is The Screwtape Letters non-fiction?”🤔

I will leave that up to the rest of you—if you want to keep it or not. It is fiction, but it’s Lewis… Maybe that means we can overlook the official designation.😀

message 13: by Cari (new)

Cari Legere (carithewriter) | 561 comments I also second Screwtape

Elijah Z. wrote: "I just read a portion of The Screwtape Letters online, and it does seem to be more fiction than non-fiction. But the entire concept is so interesting! I also found a dramatized version performed by..."

Sounds like a great idea! However, I would be more comfortable with Lily making the final call on that. If she doesn't return in a month or two, maybe we can do that. Unless another mod wants to chime in with a different opinion.....

Yes, sorry! I meant to get it together today but had a few extra things on my plate and did not get to it.

Elizabeth Faustina (ourladysthimble) | 347 comments I second Screwtape.

Catherine (semi active) | 1371 comments Whoa y'all, that's a good point about the Screwtape Letters. You're right- it is more fiction than nonfiction XD I would love to read it, though! October's a busy month for me, but it might get me out of my huge reading slump if I can find time to read it:))

message 18: by Tayjah (new)

Tayjah I also second book of Isaiah

Ok, guys, I am sorry! I have had a few unexpectedly busy days. I am still in that cycle, but should have time to set up the threads tomorrow. If you guys want to get started with Isaiah, go ahead! Since it is a long book, do you want to do 2 months for Isaiah?

Also, please chime in with your opinion on whether or not to include Screwtape! (So far, I only have Elijah’s opinion.)

Ok, so in looking this thread over, it looks like we can confidently say that most of you want to read Screwtape Letters (even though it is not non-fiction) and the book of Isaiah, and then a couple of you want to read Mere Christianity.

What do you all think of taking 2 months to read Isaiah (33 chapters in October and 33 chapters in Isaiah) and then reading The Screwtape Letters in October and Mere Christianity in November? If we read about one chapter in Lewis' 2 books every day, we can finish them both by the end of November.

If we do this, we do not need a poll, and we can just start. Let me know. If I don't hear back, I will set it up this way. (You have been warned!😁)

Ok, since I only heard from Elijah, we will set it up for a one-month reading of Isaiah and Mere Christianity. Elijah, would you like to set up an optional reading schedule in the thread? I will go set it up now.

Elijah, I tried setting it up, but it is giving me an error message without telling me what the error is. It just says to try again later. I will follow directions and do just that.🤷‍♀️

vivie♡ {hiatus} (ucymz9tq_kat6nzetrd1a-ag) Wait can I nominate A Case for Christ? I watched the movie but I want to read the book
