I think she was pretty open to the rudeness of the shifters, even though she had kind of gotten past that with the Atlanta shifters. The European ones would expect her to prove herself again. The thing she wasn't prepared for was Curran's behaviour.
I think a very mild insecurity was fed even before the Lorelei crap started. It was mostly about her being human and what limitations that placed on Curran. It was starting to make her defensive in her internal musing...she wasn't brushing it off. Then came Curran....grrrr!
Kate's seeds of doubt demonstrate that her relationship with Curran still has a way to go before they are complete partners. It also shows that she is still somewhat insecure due to the fact that she is not a shapeshifter and as such is still an outsider (as suggested in book #5 where she threatens the pack if they keep her from Curran). Moreover, even though Curran has said time and again that he would choose her over the pack, I'm not sure that she really believes him.
