Do you ever think that Stephen King is getting old and he might quit writing forever?

With age comes wisdom and even better insight for great writing. If I recall this correctly, the romance novelist Barbara Cartland lived until her 90s and was still churning out novels at a stunning rate. Why should anyone stop doing what they love just because of the turn of the calendar?

I think if Stephen King lived to be 100 he will continue to write. Writing is in his blood and I think he will continue on till his dying breath. He loves writing and I don't think he will ever give that up.Also if he does live that long can all of you imagine how many more books all of us would be able to read! It would be awesome!
I had been putting a fair bit of space between reading King books because of this exact fear, however, after a recent health scare I figure that you can't really plan too much; do what you can while you're able. Or in my case, crack on with the reading.
I heard a rumor several years ago, before his horrible accident, that he had stated he was thinking of retiring from writing the following year. THANK THE HEAVENS that was not the case! I would be totally lost without new SK novels to read. Not to mention his movies, mini-series and now a new book co-written with his son coming out this year.
Definitely not. If he wanted to stop he has been rich enough for long enough he could have done it anytime. He'll never stop having ideas and hell write them because it's what he was meant to do and it's what he loves :)

It is who he is, just like the Gunslinger on the eternal quest for the Dark Tower. Sai King must write; it is Ka.
He has (that I am aware of) twice formally announced his retirement. On both occasions it was due to health issues the most serious of the two ( as far as his career was concerned ) was when his eyesight got so bad that he could not see well enough to write. On both occasions however he rose above and found a way to carry on. With his eyesight he discovered a computer program that he could dictate his work to. With his indomitable spirit I believe he will carry on as long as he can. In saying that however I wonder if seeing his own mortality we may see less and less solo projects and more collaborative work as with his next two upcoming books.
I think King is an addictive personality, and lucky for us, he's addicted to writing. Living in your own fantasies can really get you hooked... especially when you start writing them down.
I don't think he will ever stop writing he still has so many stories inside that he has to put them down. When he get to old I can see his son writing in his name to finish his projects. But he will never get to old.
Well, Stephen King is now 70 years old. I pray he stays in good health for many years to come & is able to continue writing as long as he still wants to. I am deeply grateful for all the books that he's written over the years & their film adaptations too. Plus, I don't think he's finished yet.I don't want to think about him dying, but I know that no one lives forever. It will be a horribly sad event to lose him; a great loss for the literary world. But he will live on forever in his books & the hearts/memories of all his fans.

At what ages do people excel and continue to work in certain professions. The second oldest was writer. It extended well into people's 80s. I think Mitchner was in his 80s when he wrote his last novel. So Mr. King has a long way to go. BTW: The oldest profession was... Pope. You can still be Pope well into your 90s, if you want the job.
Nick the church is for life they don't retire like we do and go fishing. A pope is a pope unless he becomes a Cardinal.

Of course Stephen King is getting old. We all are. However I believe he has so many, many stories to write that he's probably prepared for the day when he can't write anymore. Think he loves his fans too much.
He has said in interviews that he couldn't imagine stopping, and that a lot of the greats that he looks up to wrote until they died. He said the only way he can see himself stopping is if he either mentally or physically could no longer write quality material.
I heard a rumor years ago that he was gonna retire. But it never happened. I can't imagine him ever quitting. The man got hit by a car and kept writing.

I think he tried to retire quite a while ago and failed.

maybe I read it wrong LOL it wouldn't be the first time.
I think for Stephen King with so many thoughts and stories running through his head, it would drive him crazy to just sit there and not write.
I think what may happen down the road is that he will keep writing but may stop publishing.... kind of like in finders keepers....

"Wake up, genius."
Hold on, sounds like finders Keepers. Put aside work found and kept... OK in the case of Finders Keepers it wasn't put aside so much as hidden by the Killer. Same basic thought as what the Killer had though.

Totally agree with you Michael.
Bill wrote: "I know that nothing's forever, but the prospect of King saying goodbye to his writing career, for whatever reason, does make me kind of sad and nostalgic about the old days, finding about him in co..."Personally I think he'll drop in the middle of writing a novel, Franz Kafka style, and they will release it. It will be his "Castle"
I agree with Eva. He’ll write u TIL the day he dies or he’s no longer capable of writing given his condition. He loves his job and he won’t ever pack it in.
Betty White is 96 and still doing her thing. Age is nothing. The artist knows when their work is done.-jussayin-
When it is his time, I hope that Dr. Sleep is there to help him get where he needs to go without fear. Maybe all of this recent King activity is the "Rally" that you hear about before death? (KIDDING!) I certainly hope he has some good years left ahead, but we are promised nothing in this life.
