Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late By Mo Willems is a children’s picture book about bedtime. More specifically a story about a man, parental like figure, telling the reader to not let the Pigeon stay up late. The pigeon, stubborn and sassy, refuses to go to bed and insists that they are not tired. The whole story follows the pigeon offering alternatives to going to bed trying to negotiate with the reader. This story added to my representation of bedtime because it promotes the importance of bed time. It may not be fun to go to sleep sometimes, but inevitably, we need sleep to function. Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late, uses a few of Moebius’ picturebook codes. To a reader’s perspective, the artwork in the book is relatively simple, minimal of variation of color, and of perspective and line. An example of color in the story that is interesting is the fact that the color of the background grows darker and darker throughout the story, representing the pigeon growing tired each page you turn. The first page starts off with a light grayish background and the last page ends off on a dark bluish purple color. According to Moebius’ picturebook codes every color in a story represents something. So in simple terms, light blue/gray means not tired, dark blue means tired/asleep. All in All Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late is a great and fun story to read to children to make bedtime fun.
