This mystery from 1931 is reminiscent of Hollywood screwball comedies and classic police investigations. But the person leading the investigation is an "old maid" schoolteacher. There are plenty of twists in the story, and some very unlikely behavior by the police and public officials. It was a fast read and interesting for a glimpse of the time in NYC right after the 1929 crash. But I doubt I'll remember it particularly and I don't feel compelled to read more of the series.

It was made into a movie in 1932 with Edna May Oliver which is also fun and forgettable. Shows up on TCM regularly.
