So there's an indie horror author I sometimes read who has a new short story collection. The Kindle release is set for September 20, 2023. Up until today, there was no paperback release, but the author has opened the paperback release on Amazon. It seems that he made the paperback page a while ago (the publication date listed is September 11, 2023) but only recently made it public on Amazon. So how should we proceed re: the original publication date? Should we just go with what Amazon says even though it wasn't publicly available at that time, or should we just set it to the 20th?

Go with the earliest pub date. Releasing the paperback a few days before the Kindle is fairly common with some indie authors.ETA: The author might have released the paperback on the pub site (fe, Createspace) or on their website before putting it on Amazon.

Slightly belated, but thanks very much for the help.
Reviving this thread to ask another question about authors doing weird stuff with Amazon dates. An upcoming horror novella's paperback edition is being published on October 24, 2023. However, the author and publisher have added the book to Amazon early and temporarily opened the paperback edition for special early sales for a few days - a sort of "if you want it early hop on this opportunity" thing. As such, should the paperback publication date and original publication date be set to the "real" October 24 publication date, or should it be set to the day that the early sales opened?
