A new study has shown delaying school start times for teenagers can have major benefits, including better academic performance and improved mental and physical health. When students in their mid-teens started school at 10 am instead of the usual 8:30 am, rates of illness decreased by more than half over a two-year period; they also consistently got significantly better grades than they had before. The long-term study, which was carried out in an English State School, demonstrated the huge health impact that early start times and more sleep can have on teenagers. The lead author of the paper put forward that the big issue about when to start school has a very noticeable impact on physical and mental health and of course academic performance. Conditions as diverse as obesity and depression have been linked with excessively early school times and lack of sleep, and a growing body of evidence is giving calls for change. This study is not alone, and others have shown similar results. It's been noted that british school children are the sixth most sleep-deprived in the world, with American children topping the rankings. Far from being lazy they are among the world's most active teens in terms of how much they do and the length of their days.
Recently, the American Academy of sleep medicine issued a statement declaring that delaying school start times positively impacts student achievement, health and safety. This organisation has joined other US organisations such as the American Medical Association in calling on all schools to implement start times of at least 8:30 am. As it stands, many schools in the US currently start as early as 7 am. So, there is agreement in principle between Europe and America over the fact that schools should start later than they presently do but when to open the doors to kids is still on the table for debate.
Back to the UK study where it has been suggested that schools need to start considerably later if the full health benefits are to be realised. Interestingly the later into their teen years a person is, the more they will need to sleep. Think of it as a sliding scale - 10 am is a happy medium along the scale, it isn't a magic number by any means. However, if the research were taken to extremes then we may see universities only starting to teach by noon.
The reason why sleep is so important is down to biological factors meaning that teenagers have different sleep requirements compared to older people. Adults might only require seven hours of sleep, but according to a talk given by neuroscientist professor Russell Foster of the University of Oxford, teenagers need nine hours for full brain performance. He also noted that many of them at present only get around 5 hours sleep especially during weekdays. As we go through puberty, the circadian rhythms that control the daily cycle of our bodies become delayed by a couple of hours. The release of a chemical in the brain that governs sleep, occurs later, meaning that teenagers have a natural tendency to go to bed later than their parents. It's not as if parents can or should just make their kids go to bed earlier. This, combined with the higher sleep requirement for teenagers, results in widespread sleep deprivation. Further complications come from individual variation in sleep requirements, or 'chronotypes', with everyone possessing different circadian rhythms. Some are 'larks' who like to rise early, and some are 'owls' who prefer to stay up late.
