Nike | 1687 comments Oh, I know what book I would read if spices get choosen and that is The Price of Salt. It's on the listopia for spices-books so I took for granted that salt must be approved. Hm, it is a good question though. I didn't think about it not being quite a spice. And yet it's the most common "spice" of all.

Also a note that the results could change... the close calls are pretty close so if we get 15-20 more votes like I'm expecting, they could shift. Keep your fingers crossed! And I appreciate y'all lol

Yea, we usually talk in the mods group as we watch the votes come in and just confirm that what we are seeing is all in agreement. It has been known to change within the last 24 hours though. Last week's did actually.

message 181: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I thought there might be. Still I still have 10 possibilities that will work for my reading objectives so hopefully just one of them gets in.

message 188: by Sonia (new)

Sonia Mcintosh | 47 comments Being Australian i feel like I should read more Australian authors so I like the Canadian/New Zealand/Australian promot. Has anyone completed the challenge before using Authors from just one country?

message 189: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Sonia wrote: "Being Australian i feel like I should read more Australian authors so I like the Canadian/New Zealand/Australian promot. Has anyone completed the challenge before using Authors from just one country?"

Well if it doesn’t get in there’s always the unsuccessful prompt category. I actually haven’t achieved that because I only completed it once and I definitely used Brits and Americans

message 190: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1731 comments @Sonia I did all Canadian authors one year. A few of the American centric prompts. A few adjustments were made.

message 191: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1339 comments Sonia wrote: "Being Australian i feel like I should read more Australian authors so I like the Canadian/New Zealand/Australian promot. Has anyone completed the challenge before using Authors from just one country?"

I've not done the whole challenge using Australian authors - but I'm sure it could be done. This year I have made a conscius effort to read more Australian authors (or at least know where the author are from) and have read 23 books by Australian authors - out of my total so far of 110 books read/listened. So probably still not as good as I would like.

message 192: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1731 comments Only part of my post made it in, so I will try this again.
In 2019 I did it using only Canadian authors. I had to change one of the prompts because it was an American award. I used an equivalent Canadian award.

It has influenced how I vote and made me aware of how American centric many of the prompts are.

message 193: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1339 comments Actually you have a good point Anastasia. Next year we have a book with an author from an African country. So that will make it impossible to have all authors from one country, such as Australia, unless you changed this to an author from an Austraian country. And I'm assuming the Edgar Awards are American based.

message 194: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3846 comments Bec - You could read J. M. Coetzee who is South African and Australian. And, Adrian McKinty from Melbourne is an Edgar award winner.

message 195: by GailW (last edited Sep 21, 2023 10:55PM) (new)

GailW (abbygg) | 674 comments Because I had a ton of questions and a few hours to kill, I started a Listopia for Gen X Authors. The first 77 have the year the author was born in the notes section. There is only one book per author listed.

Emily, if you would rather not use this one just let me know and I can delete. Thanks.

And I just realised Ceridwen Dovey's bio says grew up in South Africa and Australia. I've put her in my Australian author pile, but that would count too!

And I really enjoyed Adrian McKinty's The Chain

I did all Australian authors for the popsugar challenge a couple of years ago. It made it a really good challenge. I had to make minor modifications, eg changed muslim American author to Muslim Australian author

message 198: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Regarding Australian authors presumably there are authors born in Africa who are now Australian
Regarding Edgar Awards only one of its awards must be American

You’ve worked on this. If generation X gets in this could be very useful

thanks for this - I am Gen X so I was intrigued by the idea, but it was just so hard to find an author who fit so I didn't vote for it. But this is a good resource.
