How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix - October 2023 Theme BOM - HORROR (starts 16 Oct)

Ch 1 to Ch 7
1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
First impressions are Mark seems like Mom, and Louise, like Dad. Mark might generously be called a free spirit, but would drive me nuts - I like bites of free spirit with a larger helping of orderly I guess. He also seems really thoughtless, but Louise has also cut him off from her life - seems like their relationship issues will be a large part of the story - more to learn.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all? Absolutely.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Uh, not at all. I mean, I guess if there was one or two that were special to me, I guess I would want for sentimental reasons, but large dolls that were made to look like me and my brother? no.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Funny you should ask... It is wild how quickly a family goes from one thing when the parents are alive, to another when there is no longer that parental foundation holding them all together.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I had never heard of them, but I think a funeral / memorial service should be celebrations of the lost loved one, filled with all the things that brought them joy in life, so I loved that part.

Ch 1 to Ch 7
1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story. Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
I think the siblings’ relationship will be an crucial factor as the plot moves forward. Mark and their mother have similar personality traits as do Louise and their father. And, oh, little Poppy! I am hoping for the best for her as the story progresses.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
Oh, derp, I didn’t even notice. I did see the first section was called Denial, but I hadn’t looked further at the TOC to see the other section names.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Nothankyouverymuch. If they scared me as a child, I sure as anything don’t want them around as an adult.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Not to that extent, and not post-death. But yes, quite a bit of snarking and squabbling with my sibling as my parents were in their last months. I was the Louise in that situation… trying to do right by my parents while coping with my own family. My sister wasn’t Mark level, but she was just overall clueless.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I didn’t, because it sounds so out there that it must be made up. But, really, I’m not surprised to find it’s not. (I am suddenly thinking of LuAnne Platter and her Manger Babies.)

1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
Louise seems to be holding back whereas Mark isn't at all. Same goes for their dad and their mum respectively. Mark will probably pop up throughout the story, although I can't say how yet. I kinda wanna say they end up being closer by the end of the book?? Like, actually close??
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
Actually, no. I don't have any expectations and I don't want to think about how each section could be affected by the different stages of grief, or would they could mean for the book.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
What I keep them if inheriting them? Big No. And yes they're f*cking weird, but it seems to me like their mother needed something to hold on to, something that would stay the same and always be there, even if her kids grew up eventually and moved out and on.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Nope. Most of my family are civil enough- the ones who don't get along just never show up at the same time x))
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I had never heard about them but honestly I'm not surprisesd they exist. Have not googled though :D

Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
This is a strange family! I'm not sure why Mark is so rush rush rush about getting his parent's ashes spread in the ocean.
Something is fishy.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
Interesting... I hadn't noticed....
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Yes. Totally creepy. I would get rid of them quickly.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
I haven't recently. There was one about 30 years ago that was a bit scarring, but with my generation, everyone is incredibly civil.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
No, I had no idea. I do not know of any organization like this. I can understand how using puppets can help people though.

The family seem pretty dysfunctional. We are getting a lot of the POV from Louise, and I don't think she is the most balanced person either really. This seems to be a novel about family secrets with a big dose of creepy thrown in.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
Oops I didn't even twig to that. Duh! I wonder if a lot of the supposed creepy stuff are manifestations of grief. We will see.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
That would be a big NO. Nothing is as creepy as life size dolls modelled on your children. And that whole Christian Puppeteers.. double creepy.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Not personally, although there is an issue in my extended family with a post death squabble going on now. It happens unfortunately quite often.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
Really, it's a thing? Going off to google..
DQs Set 2: Chapters 8 - 15
6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?

9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
The wills surprised me and disappointed me. It just seems to play out how the parents treated the kids all their lives. No wonder Mark and Louise are at odds.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
I intensely dislike rodents of all kinds, and I am not good with dead things, including taxidermied creatures. That scene was a nightmare for me.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
Yep, I’d still be refusing to truly believe the need for an exorcism. I’d accept family help to assist with clearing out the house and whatever other practical tasks were needed to get back to my life.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
They each had their own personalities, part positive and part challenging. The parents exacerbated that situation instead of doing anything that we’ve seen so far to improve it. Yeah, Mark’s a dick, but he was raised to believe the world would always provide for him.
My favorite line from this section: “This is a funeral, Mark,” Brody said. “You can’t pump your fist in here.”

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
After Louise detailed what she thought was in the Wills, I knew it wouldn't go how she expected. It seemed totally unfair how her Mother's will played out. Parents do some strange things sometimes.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
Totally creeped me out. I had to make myself read that chapter. The only thing worse would be snakes..
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
Mmm.. In this case exorcism seems the way to go..
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
Their childhood certainly had some issues, I can't say I like either of them very much. Louise does have every right after such an unfair will to have unresolved feelings especially for their mother.
DQs Set 2: Chapters 8 - 15
6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
I knew something was going to go pear shaped because, well we need a story for there to be a book. But those wills were messed up and no wonder the family is so dysfunctional.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
I would of done more that put it in the trash. I think a burning would of been in order for sure.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
I'm not sure I would 100% believe in a haunting at this point but I would let the exorcism happen. Because what could it hurt?
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
I think they both have issues and it's certainly not all on Mark.

DQs Set 2: Chapters 8 - 15
6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
I was expecting something odd, but not that. And why the "art" collection got left to Louise seems very oddly sadistic, given her dislike of the art during life!
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
Argh! I dislike squirrels at the best of times, let alone stuffed and undead and zombie attacking me! Like Judith says, I would have burnt them up already!
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
If someone offers me a free service that lets the creeped out estate agent to sell the property, I'd totally take it, whether I believed in hauntings or not. Given some creepy experiences, I'd be biting their arm off!
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
There are definitely hints that Louise is hiding something else, and Mark seems less of an ass, but really, their parents aren't coming out at all well!

Their relationship will be pivotal and they can both be annoying.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
I listened to the audiobook and didn't really notice (or pay attention to) the introduction to those fazes while listening.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
No!
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
I haven't personally experienced it, but I can certainly see it happening. One of my grandmothers put names of recipients on some of her things before she died so there would be no fights or arguments😂
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I did not google it - assumed it was invented by the author. But of course, now I did. It's a membership organization of Christian Puppeteers, not a charity.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
Each had their own favorite
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
Absolutely - killer manger squirrels oh my.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
Hard to know how I would respond or feel. Emotions sometimes take over our control.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
It was an odd childhood. Blame for everyone.

The parents seemed relatively normal when visiting in San Fran and Mark seemed initially like the average second kid that never grew up -- but I feel like there is more to both of these quick impressions. I think that Louise has definitely isolated herself from all of them and that is going to make for a very confusing reentry to their life in SC.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all? I'm listening to it on audio so didn't notice this until its mentioned here. I'll have to keep an eye on how or if that plays with what happens.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance? Weird, but not creepy until put on a set of a horror novel. I wouldn't be interested in keeping them, but if I had grown up with them and knew they meant something to my mother, I might?
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys? No. My experience is usually irrational laughing and giggling instead of fighting. I was okay with the fighting -- but the spitting was a little much.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
No, but interesting. If done with the right motivation, I imagine it would be a great learning tool for anyone.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
Not at all! In reading I was pretty upset about Mark's reaction. Louise's disappointment totally warranted I think. But we all get to decide what happens to our things...there's likely a good reason for it.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
Totally crazy scarry. The mom was definitely possessed for creating a squirrel nativity deal with them. My inner religious self was having a field day!
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
Absolutely not. She should have jumped on that opportunity...I predict she's really going to regret this!
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
I'm a bit softer on Mark now. These kids really had a challenging life. More to come I'm sure.

(not really spoilers imo but better safe than sorry :D)

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
I hadn't considered the wills before so no thoughts head empty, but just like the 'kids' themselves I'm sure they caught everyone else off guard too. I honestly don't know how a parent could ever do something like this, unless they really really hate their child - which doesn't seem to have been the case but honestly who effing knows...
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
I kinda zoned out here /didn't pay exact attention, but they already creeped me out when first mentioned. A SQUIRREL nativity, really? (oop- gotta be careful what I say or even THINK, wouldn't want them to come after me next 🤐)
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
Honestly I'd be all "do what you gotta do" and get the f*ck outta there.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
I already read on so know a bit more, understand their relationship and the feelings they have for each other better, but at that point my opinions hadn't changed much on either one of them yet I'm sure. They're both pretty unlikeable characters lbr.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids? My guess is that they both did what they thought was best by leaving everything to the child that most thought like them? But really, neither of those wills made sense.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective? I thought it was pretty silly, really. The dolls are much creepier.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help? I didn't understand her thinking on that. I mean its not really going to hurt anything, why not just let it happen.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them? I still don't really like either of them, and I'm pretty sure that Louise is making herself more of a victim than she was. And both parents sound a little off their rockers. I also feel like there's something more to their father's family being unwilling to have anything to do with them.

1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
Family overall is probably going to be an important element of the book. Considering all the information we’re getting about Mark, I have a feeling we will see a good amount of him and the sibling rivalry. I also think that the sibling's distance will play a major role in story, i.e why he was so quick to get rid of everything in the house and cremate the remains
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
I like the way it's organized, but I don’t necessarily have any grand expectations – the stages can take many different forms- but it might mirror the sibling's relationship.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Super creepy. I would be the opposite of excited to get one.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
No, never. I have a really small family so there has never been a cause to explode like this.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I did google them! I didn’t know they were real, but it honestly doesn't surprise me.

1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story. Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
Dysfunctional! But, I think my family is dysfunctional too!! I would suspect that their relationship would be a major contributor to the storyline.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
Since I didn't notice it either, no impact at all! I tend not to read anything about the BOMs, so I have no expectations going in.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Extremely weird and creepy, like horror movie creepy! I wouldn't want them at all - I'd gladly give them to my siblings!!
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Yep, when my dad died, I pretty much walked out of the funeral planning it got so bad. Also at a cousin's funeral, the police was called to stop a fight. Did I mention we're dysfunctional....
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I did not, but am not surprised. If you can imagine it, somewhere out there it is probably already real.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
I wasn't expecting the wills. I was expecting something along the lines of "until you get along, this house isn't going to sell, and you won't see any of the money." I'm kinda hoping that's not what's behind this all, but we'll see.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
Yes!
Especially because they were in her shirt. Totally yuck!
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
No way. Exorcise the house. Bring in the team! I mean, especially after pulling the doll out of the garbage disposal!!
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
Mark is growing on me. Louise is starting to irritate me, so yes. My opinion is changing.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
Nope, didn't see that coming. I sort of expected the parents to do something to force Louise and Mark to work together and get along/like each other. I really hope those screwed up wills weren't their idea for doing that!
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
It's creepy, that's for sure! I would have burned the whole art collect, immediately upon knowing it was left to me!!
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
I would have let her do it immediately! There is nothing rational about this family or the way they think...why try to make this totally irrational thing rely on rational thoughts!
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
Not really, they both were catered to in some fashion by one or both parents. I feel like there is something major that we haven't learned yet too.

The family is less dysfunctional than mine, haha. I think their relationship will play a big part in the story.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
I felt the grief part was a bit overdone by the author. It felt forced
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Super creepy to name dolls after kids. I was scared of dolls as a child and I still find them very disturbing. They need to be burned.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Yeah, a few times but not to such extend.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I haven't.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
I wasn't surprised by the will. It's already established that the family is dysfunctional. The parents messed up the kids.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
It was very disturbing. The whole house is full of nasty, horrifying things.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
I would definitely accept family help and go for an exorcism as an added safety measure.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
Even after getting to know about their childhood I still don't like them.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
Eh, something was going to have to get both siblings in the house for the plot to work with the puppets. It really indicates that the parents aren’t communicating much with each other. Also, how does this work with joint accounts etc?
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
I think T. Kingfisher does better with haunted taxidermy. This made me want to go reread her book again. I kind of like bad taxidermy. My family sent my uncle a taxidermized rabbit in an easter bonnet as a gag gift one year. (Gag gifts are a long-standing tradition between my dad and my uncle).
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
I am all for exorcising things/rooms etc. with bubbles. Placebo effect and resetting mental points of view
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
I have finished reading the book. It does give it more nuance, but I never really cared that much of any of the characters. Everyone in this book could use a good therapist.

I broke down and finished today! I hate when I do that...but I couldn't wait :Z

DQs Set 1: Chapters 1 - 7
1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
I relate to Louise on so many levels, from the very type A personality to frustration over a younger sibling (although I will say my little brother is nowhere NEAR as bad as Mark is). I think it's almost comical just how insane Mark is with his 'Terminal Assholism.' I do think that he and Louise are going to have to become an unexpected "crime fighting" duo later on and their differences in personality will end up serving more as an odd sort of comic relief from the horror.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
I think the framework is interesting, but I don't think it truly gives me any expectations. I'm interested to see the bargaining stage, and I guess I do expect that it will be the most horror filled.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
I honestly think that's the worst part of this whole thing - almost like she has voodoo dolls of her children. No thank you!
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys? Not over money, but my father's already rocky relationship with my brother definitely tanked when my mother died, to say the least!
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space] This didn't really shock me because I've definitely encountered a christian puppeteer or two in my life. I grew up in church and going to various church camps - my dad even worked at one for FCA (fellowship for christian athletes), which brought one in to entertain staffers children as part of the programming. Not the weirdest thing I've encountered in my faith though, to be fair xD.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
I guess it really isn't my place (fictional characters or not, lol), but I don't think it's really ever fair to do a 100% inheritance to one person or the other, obviously barring extreme circumstances. I have a feeling there was also some sort of marital squabble that went on before the writing of the wills regarding each child's personalities.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
Definitely! Terrifying, but I feel like there was just enough "logical explanation" that can be given to it to fit into the denial stage of grief well. Jumping right in but also plausible deniability.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
No - I'm immediately bringing in a priest, and possibly even saging / doing other religious practices outside of my faith to cover ALL the bases, selling the house as quickly as possible, and getting the hell out of there.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
It makes me feel sorry for Mark, but so far still not enough to excuse his Terminal Assholism. I also don't really know how to feel about Louise yet, but I CAN tell you I disrespect the hell out of her parents for not immediately seeking out a psychologist.

1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
The dynamic is weird! It’s like Mark is the golden child even though he seems like a total fuck-up with no follow-through. It’s almost that Louise becomes childlike just by returning there.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
I’m wondering how many others will actually die now…
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Both weird AND creepy! Totally NOT a doll fan, not even as a little girl… I think I would’ve run screaming from the house when I saw them! Why would their mom give Louise the damn “art” and Mark the house anyway? So unfair!
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Totally! Both my family and my husband’s are totally evil and greedy! There’s nothing like a death in the family to bring that to the forefront. My motto is, “I had nothing yesterday, I have nothing today and will have nothing tomorrow.” It’s really up to the deceased to leave their worldly goods to whomsoever they choose. People shouldn’t expect to automatically inherit anything. I tell my only son that I promise to leave him all my nothing!
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs?
Sorry! No puppeteers for me! I won’t be googling them anytime soon!

Because it would probably have been a short, boring book otherwise? 😁 - In seriousness, it was probably done to ramp up the friction between the siblings. it also made me want to punch Mark in the face.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
For some reason I actually found it amusing (in a creepy way). Probably because I'm not easily creeped out anymore, lol.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
In real life? I'd probably roll my eyes a lot but let her go ahead. As far as the book goes, she was obviously being an idiot. doesn't she realise she's in a horror book? 😂
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
I still want to punch Mark, but Louise comes off as less sympathetic too as the story goes on.

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
That was unexpected but that was really crazy. Just a few minutes and everything was hers. But wth is Mark's reaction! I really don't like parents having their favorites like that.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
That was creepy thank god its only on books! I personally not a fan of any stuffed toys.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
Depends on situations. But when it comes to this one I'm not going to stay there and asked help right away.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
Mark still acts as brat. Maybe the way their parents let them grow like doesn't care bout a thing and keeping secrets but still don't like them. Lol.

Love this comment! Made my morning!

Love this comment! Made my morning!"
Glad to have given you a chuckle. 😁

➡️ I just think Louise and Mark's relationship is just typical siblings in which their relationship just fell apart.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
➡️ I wasn't aware of these stages. I didn't expect anything to be honest.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
➡️ IT IS WEIRD! This is just my opinion only as I never played dolls growing up.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
➡️Probably when I was growing up but my memory is not that clear.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
➡️ Nope I did not. I honestly lost interest halfway through the end. I just finished it for the points. Sorry.

Ch 8 to Ch 15
6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
➡️Definitely unfair! I don't like favoritism.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
➡️I don't know. This book is really weird!
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
➡️Nope. I will try to do everything just to get help than being unreasonable over something.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
➡️Nope. I don't know how to further explain my answer.

1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
This is obviously the key relationship in the story. I felt initially like it was setting Mark up as the "bad" guy - potentially the killer. While my family relationships are very different and positive, I resonated a lot with Louise's personality characteristics and her frustrations with a sibling who can't get it together.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
I found this an interesting organizational device. I don't find the stages particularly helpful in real life (in my experience grief doesn't progress in any pattern or linear fashion) that being said I think the emotional aspects of grief are really good framing devices for the story itself.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Nope, nope, and nope. Get them far away from me. Weird, creepy, and all the things. Just no. I wasn't expecting the dolls at all and it took it from "haunted house" to "am I sure I really want to read this?" Mark of a good horror book?
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Never in person. We have always gotten along. However, I know of stories from other parts of my family and friends where things got awkward and in some cases nasty. I did go to a funeral once where someone stood up and said all the horrible things about the person before someone shut it down. I can see where strong opinions coupled with emotions plus bad history contribute to this situation though. I definitely felt like they were setting up Mark as the killer here because it felt like he was covering something up.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
What? Huh. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as there seems to be an organization for everything. I would have guessed that it was a fake organization though. I wonder what they thought about this book and the premise? Would they embrace it, similarly to the Mormon Church and The Book of Mormon, or find this work repugnant because of the way it frames the use of puppets and faith (towards the end)? *Going to Google now*

6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
I think both parents are in the wrong. Setting up a trust for a child who you do not think is mature enough is one thing - not communicating it is another. Giving one child everything and another nothing is just as problematic. I would like to say this is unrealistic but I am not sure it is.
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
This totally creeped me out. However it wasn't until they were back in the garbage can that it really did.
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
Um nope. Get the salt, the candles, the Holy Water, I'm down for it all. After the stuffed squirrels and the dolls moving around I am not sure I wouldn't be all in for just calling someone and removing it all even if I got nothing.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
Not really. Their dysfunctional relationship and the clear issues with other family members with the mom and dad leads you to think that there were things in the past. The creepy dolls too.

Ch 1-7
1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
I think their relationship will be a big part of the story. He seems like he’s going to make me laugh a lot. PS — I’m going to use Terminal Assholism in a sentence tge first chance I get! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
This idea I like. I think it will show how they move through their grief. It’s a good idea on the part of the author.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
No no no no no no no no!!!
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
When my grandmother died there was a really bad storm on of the nights during her funeral and my mom flipped out and wanted to stay all night with her. It wasn’t so much a fight as a scene 🩷
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? No way. That’s too weird. Sorry to puppet lovers. They probably bring happiness to some people but not to me!

10. Pupkin is,,, alive??? Okay, no big surprise there to be honest, but we did finally get some interesting background info from Louise and Mark's childhood, even if that's not how Louise remembers it. Do you think she really doesn't remember, has simply forgotten, due to trauma or it just having happened way too long ago, or does she remember but chooses not to acknoledge it? Or maybe Mark misremembers himself and it didn't even happen (that way at least)? They were both still very young after all, Mark especially. Is it possible to remember something that happened when you were only two years old?
11. The second perspective adds a new layer, however it only got added halfway through the book. Were you surprised we got Mark's POV at all, and would you have preferred for it to be there from the beginning of the book? Also, has this last section changed your opinion on him in any way? He did save Louise from Pupkin after all....
12. To me, the last chapter feels a bit like a fever dream, definitely like they were on drugs. I personally don't remember which MPGs the book has and don't want to check in case of 'spoilers' now, but do you think there's a possibility the house, our main characters, the puppets, the dolls, Pupkin, everything- isn't actually haunted and none of it is actually happening?? What if it's just a dream (which would be the worst ending ngl), mental problems like Louise wants to believe, or mold in the house that's effecting them like this plus possible drug use from Mark when he was away?
13. I can't help but wonder how the book is gonna end... If Pupkin is indeed an evil puppet come to life I only see one way it can be destroyed - fire. Do you think they'll end up burning down the entire house (although Hill House (in the show at least) wouldn't let itself be burned down either, so who knows if that would work), or will the dolls and puppets take over? What do you predict will happen in the rest of the book?

Ch 1 to Ch 7
1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
For all that Louise and her parents seem well adjusted, there's got to be something we don't know about Mark and their dynamic. I thought it was a little odd that the parents are supportive of Louise's pregnancy, but she still seems to think that they favor/baby/etc Mark.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
I... did not even notice this. LOL Blame the audiobook! I think it will be interesting to see how the story progresses during each phase - a clever way to organize a book for sure.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
NAMED AFTER THE KIDS. Dolls are one thing, but naming them after your own children? Why? Exceptions for any kids who may have died young, but otherwise - no thank you.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Not that I can recall - but I can definitely see how it's a prime environment for those kinds of arguments. There are a lot of emotions happening!
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
Honestly, I probably wouldn't have if you hadn't mentioned it. I'm not surprised that they're a real organization though - honestly I feel like there's an organization for EVERYTHING these days! LOL

10. Pumpkin is,,, alive???"
WAIT WAIT WAIT. IT'S NAME IS PUMPKIN?
I'm listening to the audiobook and I swore it's name was Pupkin. LOL

OK...I'm bad and have finished the book already. Will do my best to comment as to what I was thinking at this point in the book...
10. Pumpkin is,,, alive??? Okay, no big surprise there to be honest, but we did finally get some interesting background info from Louise and Mark's childhood, even if that's not how Louise remembers it. Do you think she really doesn't remember, has simply forgotten, due to trauma or it just having happened way too long ago, or does she remember but chooses not to acknowledge it? Or maybe Mark misremembers himself and it didn't even happen (that way at least)? They were both still very young after all, Mark especially. Is it possible to remember something that happened when you were only two years old?
I think it's possible for a child to block out bad things particularly if it's one of many situations.
11. The second perspective adds a new layer, however it only got added halfway through the book. Were you surprised we got Mark's POV at all, and would you have preferred for it to be there from the beginning of the book? Also, has this last section changed your opinion on him in any way? He did save Louise from Pumpkin after all....
At this point in the book, my view of Mark is evolving about as drastically as I feel about these haunted puppets. I'm also thinking I'm not a 'horror' reader but I'm actually liking this book...I absolutely have to know what happens next...thus the finish :z.
I believe the 2nd POV really amp'd up my interest.
12. To me, the last chapter feels a bit like a fever dream, definitely like they were on drugs. I personally don't remember which MPGs the book has and don't want to check in case of 'spoilers' now, but do you think there's a possibility the house, our main characters, the puppets, the dolls, Pumpkin, everything- isn't actually haunted and none of it is actually happening?? What if it's just a dream (which would be the worst ending ngl), mental problems like Louise wants to believe, or mold in the house that's effecting them like this plus possible drug use from Mark when he was away?
At this point I was thinking, like you, that Mark was definitely high on something with the Penis Missile story...I had to re-read that paragraph to be sure I didn't miss a section.
There is a lot going on for sure. I will say this Pupkin ghost/creepy puppet whatever does seem to be at the root of everything. I was thinking it was their mom's ghost actually...or some kind of connection there.
13. I can't help but wonder how the book is gonna end... If Pumpkin is indeed an evil puppet come to life I only see one way it can be destroyed - fire. Do you think they'll end up burning down the entire house (although Hill House (in the show at least) wouldn't let itself be burned down either, so who knows if that would work), or will the dolls and puppets take over? What do you predict will happen in the rest of the book?
I was thinking they should have taken advantage of the offer of their family member, Mercy was it?, to help.

DQs Set 2: Chapters 8 - 15
6. Were you expecting those wills? Why do you think both parents were so unfair on the kids?
No! I was really expecting a 50/50 split. It feels like such a weird choice for parents who obviously loved both of their children (albeit in different ways). I'm also very curious about why each one favored their particular choice to inherit... and what's with Louise getting the art? It makes me wonder if there's some hidden message in her art?
7. Yikes! killer stuffed squirrels! The first violent haunting here, was it effective?
Honestly? I kind of thought she was going to wake up from this dream. I'm really dying to know what the twist is going to be here because it just feels SO strange, there are definitely some spooky things happening but I feel like it might be more psychological than actual? I see you, unreliable narrator!
8. Despite the various creepy things that Louise has experienced, she's refusing to let her aunt exorcise the house. Would you still be hanging onto rational reasons over accepting family help?
I would definitely be hanging on to rational reasons. Haunted? No way! But I'm also kind of weirded out by how commonplace hauntings seem to be? Like the cousin/real estate agent is like "you can't sell a haunted house, you have to take care of that first"... like it's a water leak that happens in every third house she sells. Weird vibes.
9. We've had more insight into the childhood of Mark and Louise. Does this change your opinion of either of them?
I don't know that my opinion has changed yet. I always had a feeling there was more to Mark than how Louise pegged him, but there's always another secret...

Ch 1 to Ch 7
1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
My first thought was they sound like a typical enough family. I’m not close with my sibling, so I can relate to some extent. I suspect the entire book will center on their relationship.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
It’s an interesting layout. I don’t think I changed my expectations, though.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
Oh… HECK NO!!!! Creepy and very weird. I’d want them gone before I set foot in the house.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
I’ve seen a few, but nothing close to these two!
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs?
I had no idea this was a thing and then started down the Google rabbit hole. I’ve never interacted with a group like that, but also think dolls and puppets are equally creepy.

10. Pumpkin is,,, alive???"
WAIT WAIT WAIT. IT'S NAME IS PUMPKIN?
I'm listening to the audiobook and I swore it's name was Pupkin. LOL"
OH MY GOD no you're right it is Pupkin apparently 😂
I'm listening to the audio as well and turns out I'm hard of hearing 🙃
lemme go fix this omg this is embarassing

1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
Aside: I plan to steal and use the phrase "Terminal Assholism" in future. Thank you Hendrix!
Right now, they seem to have a dysfunctional and distance relationship. There’s no information if there was a major event for their falling out but it seems like it’s always been tense. Hopefully their parent’s passing will change things for the better between the two siblings.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
To be honest, I didn’t notice that. But I don’t think it changes my impression of the book. Hendrix is a pure horror novelist so I don’t expect it to have a literary take on grief and horror.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
I’m not creeped out by dolls and life size dolls. That said, I wouldn’t like that as an inheritance and a bunch of dolls in my home haha.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
I’m very fortunate to never have experienced that in my family. However, I understand people react to grief very differently and it changes. So I think that’s perfectly normal to have a sudden outburst over the “smallest” things.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs? [note: please keep responses respectful to people's beliefs, this is a safe space]
I didn’t know that existed either and wouldn’t have thought to Google it. I’ve never interacted with or knew of an organization like that. I’m not sure that kind of organization would be common in my area.
Ch 1 to Ch 7
1.) What are your first impressions of the family and of Louise and Mark? How pivotal do you think their relationship (or lack thereof) will play in the story.
A total messed up. But who's knows what will happen next. I'm curious as to why Mark wants to clean the house right away and sell it.
2.) The book is organized into sections following the 5 stages of grief. Does this impact your expectations of the book at all?
its interesting but probably this is more on the sibling's relationship than their parents dying or the mother daughter relationship. We'll find out.
3.) Okay. Life size dolls named after her children. Weird, creepy? Would you be excited to have them as part of your inheritance?
I'm good thank you. I'm not really a fun of doll how much more a life size dolls. Probably donate it to those who likes it.
4.) Have you ever experienced a family post-death squabble/fight like the one Louise and Mark had in front of the junk clean out guys?
Luckily, no. Me and my sis are tight and bffs.
5.) Did anyone else google Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If so, were you surprised to find they were a real organization? Has anyone interacted with them before or a similar organization for other religious beliefs?
i didn't and haven't.
