Fall 23 Read-a-Thon: Team Ship
I’m so looking forward to this read-a-thon! I usually just contribute pages and some books, this time round I’ll try some audio as well.
I have a pile of potential books for this with little hope of getting through them all! I like the idea of audio books but I almost never use that format.
I've got 4 audiobooks checked out right now and a pile of physicals so hopefully I'll be able to fit some to the Prompts!
Thanks to the leaders who will steer our ship (haha)! I looked at the spreadsheet and I’m not sure how this will work! This is my first time doing a group readathon.Edit:
I’m currently reading Woman, Watching: Louise de Kiriline Lawrence and the Songbirds of Pimisi Bay
And will have close to 200 pages left when this starts tomorrow. It should work for a number of prompts.
Hi Everyone, Welcome to the team. I love readathons. We're going to have a lot of fun this week. I'm headed over to the spreadsheet to put in my books & the prompts they work for. I'll be all ready in the morning for the start of the readathon.
MJ wrote: "Thanks to the leaders who will steer our ship (haha)! I looked at the spreadsheet and I’m not sure how this will work! Every page or minute of reading matters regardless of if you read or finish books long enough to count for a prompt.
You can watch and see how others fill in the spreadsheet or you can always post here and get the captains to fill it in.
Hi Ship-mates! I added some books to the planning tab. I have a couple in progress but still with 100 or more pages to go and a couple of books I hope to read. The TBR books may fit for more prompts than I have indicated on the sheet.
Looking forward to reading together. Thanks to the captains!
To Read:✅Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus Vol. 7
✅Why Fathers Cry at Night: A Memoir in Love Poems, Letters, Recipes, and Remembrances audio
✅Tastes Like Shakkar
A Shadow Crown
✅After Dead: What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse
The Last Train to Key West
To Finish:
✅Barely Functional Adult: It’ll All Make Sense Eventually
The Brothers Hawthorne
Little Women
Dead But Not Forgotten: Stories from the World of Sookie Stackhouse
This was what I was thinking right now but we'll see what actually happens. :)
I can't wait to get started. I put a bunch of books on hold at the library and I have a bunch of short books to read. Hoping to plow through some. Looking forward to working with you all.I'll see where some of my books can fit in tomorrow morning.
Hi Everyone!Looking forward to reading with you this week! Wish I wasn't SO BUSY right now so I could read more. (I love the Read-a-Thons!) I have one book with just over 100 pages left that I can finish tomorrow. I have some other books ready to go. I'll see what I'm inspired to read this week and will put a couple into the spreadsheet now.
Good Morning Team Ship, I got up early & did all my Saturday morning stuff so I'm ready to read all day. My current read is Kindness Goes Unpunished. I really like the Longmire series. I have 116 pages left so I will finish it today. Stay cool & enjoy your reading today.
I'm currently reading Holes and wouldn't you know the pages are 233 - just one off from the prompt.I do have several graphic novels on hold at the library that are over 200 pages. I should be picking most of them up through the week. Not sure what else I'm going to read. I may read a short Stephen King book - The Mist. I have plenty of books to pick from that's for sure. I try to pick smaller ones or thrillers - ones I know I can read fast. If I read a literary fiction it takes me longer.
Lately I've been on a binge to read some of the middle school books that are classics and also books like Alice in Wonderland that I never read. So my books lately have been out of the ordinary for me.
I should be able to complete Holes today or tomorrow. I have a picnic today but that's all I really have planned for the next week.
Finished one of my audiobooks this morning! Twice Tempted - good Ole paranormal romance to get me started. 7 hours of audio listened to at 3x speed and here we are.. Popped it into the wedding slot since that seemed to have the least amount of books in the planning tab that would fit it.
For Sherri and Erica: I’ll be offline from tomorrow morning until sometime Tuesday afternoon, so my numbers for Sunday and Monday will get added when I’m back. Also, is it best to fill in our pages read once a day?
@MJ no worries, fill things in when you can. I like to fill in a book for prompts when I finish it because that can help others pick which book to read, but ultimately what ever works for you is best. They do allow a bit of time after the read-a-thon is over for people to fill in the spreadsheet because of all the different time zones. Enjoy reading!
Thanks!! Since I’m still figuring this out, I wasn’t sure if updating page counts more than once a day would make it more confusing! After Tuesday I’ll be checking in more and seeing what’s needs filling in!
I finished Red Queen and entered it in CLUE "book with a weapon on the cover" since that had the least overlap with others' books. Also recorded the 105 pages I had left to read in it this morning.
I was wondering what you all think about not adding color to the spreadsheets until the prompt is counted as complete? Since a prompt isn't counted as complete until we have 500 pages read or 10 hours of audio complete should we count it as complete on the spread sheet?
Sherri wrote: "I was wondering what you all think about not adding color to the spreadsheets until the prompt is counted as complete? Is that how it works?
Re: adding color - whatever makes the most sense to those who’cmve done this before works for me!
I may be wrong but the way it usually works is we must have 500 pages read or the 10 hours of audio listened in order to claim a prompt as completed. We can choose the prompt.
Hi, the question is solved. Congratulations Edie. She finished Red Queen.Congratulations to Elizabeth & Alisa for listening to 10.4 hours of audio. We earned a roll. Edie used Red Queen for Clue a book with a weapon of any kind on the cover. We're using green for the first round. Great going.
@sherri I was using colour on completed prompts just to make it easier to see what prompts are to be filled. I figured we just worry about the rolls nearer the end of the week. What does the team prefer. Also meant to ask where people are, I’m in Western Canada.
Erica wrote @sherri I was using colour on completed prompts just to make it easier to see what prompts are to be filled. I figured we just worry about the rolls nearer the end of the week. What does the team prefer. We can try it any way we like & if it gets confusing we can try something else.
I finished Kindness Goes Unpunished. 5 stars. I put it on the completed tab under Risk a character who is military or ex military. I'm in Southwest Va.
Sherri wrote: "Erica wrote @sherri I was using colour on completed prompts just to make it easier to see what prompts are to be filled. I figured we just worry about the rolls nearer the end of the week. What doe..."That was why I used color on the prompt for my completed book. I realize we also has a pages/hours piece before it counts as completed, but I like to see as many prompts with books in them as possible..
I looked at our Rolls Tracking & we're at -3. The problem is we're putting completed books under the games categories without accruing roles. As of now our rolls tracking is pages 1042, audio 20.9,accrued 4, used 7, remaining -3. It looks like the way to track completed books is to mark them on the completed section of the spreadsheet & only add them to the games as we accrue rolls. Take a look & see if you agree then Erica or I can make adjustments. Thank You Everyone.
I think it makes the most sense to just add the rolls as we get there. I see that rolls were added that we don't have available - I would just leave the prompt in and add the roll when it's available. At least that's my opinion. You can still put the prompt in it just won't count as completed until there's a roll to go with it.
If you go into other teams spreadsheets you can see they haven't added rolls yet/or don't have rolls but they're popping prompts in.
Elizabeth wrote If you go into other teams spreadsheets you can see they haven't added rolls yet/or don't have rolls but they're popping prompts in. Thank You Elizabeth for that observation. I did go on & removed 3 rolls leaving the prompts. The rolls count is correct now. We'll add rolls to the prompts filled as we collect them. Thank You Everyone.
It was me who entered the rolls early for motivation to read pages. It’s easy enough to not enter them early too.
I finished Solito. It was limited in what I could put it under, so placed it in RISK -- takes place in more than one country.
Mod Note: Pages read and hours listened are working a bit differently this Read-a-Thon. You must accrue "rolls" in order to officially fill prompts - which means each prompt read needs one book and one roll in order to mark it as completed. You earn rolls by reading 500 pages or 10 audio hours as a team. You assign rolls by marking a "1" in the Rolls Used column next to the prompt. This will tally on the Rolls tab on your spreadsheet, so you can keep track of how many rolls you have available and how many you have used. If you have any questions, please post on the Team Challenge Intro and FAQs thread!
Mod Note: (Hopefully this is the last one lol) I have lowered the requirements to earn rolls. It is now at 400 pages or 6 hours of audio. Your spreadsheets have already been updated!
Good Morning Team Ship. We're doing great. As noted in Emily's post the requirements for accruing rolls have been changed to 400 pages & 6 hours of audio. We only need 2 more prompts filled on Game of Life to finish round 1 there. Our rolls count now is 7 accrued, 4 rolls used, 3 remaining.
One quick housekeeping note. After you've moved your plan column to complete please delete that column in plans. If you prefer someone else to do that just let the group know. Everyone is good about helping.
Good morning! I finished Rue des Rosiers, and I think I added everything correctly and deleted it from my plans. I'm not sure how the roles work and who assigns them, so I left that alone. I have a book related to science and nature in progress, but it's longish and I won't finish that until later this week.
I'm taking a bunch of digital books and a paper copy of a book with me camping, and will update info for those when I get back Tuesday.
Happy reading!!
Sherri wrote: "Good Morning Team Ship, I got up early & did all my Saturday morning stuff so I'm ready to read all day. My current read is Kindness Goes Unpunished. I really like the Longmire series..."I too love the Longmire books. I can't wait to get the new one when it comes in at the library.
Hello everyone! I haven't participated in a Read-a Thon since last year and am hoping to contribute a decent amount this week.I spent the day at the beach yesterday and managed to read only like 15 pages or so, ugh! It's too hard to concentrate on a book and watch a 6 yr old at a busy beach....I read a magazine instead, LOL, takes less brain power.
I am trying to make up for it today and am hoping to finish Loathe to Love You tonight. I have the physical copy and it has an orange cover not like the picture on Goodreads which looks pinkish.
I am in Hawaii.
I'm happy with the change to how we can accrue rolls. We've read 12 books as a team and have 12 rolls.
Good Morning Team Ship. Welcome Jessica. Wow Hawaii. We all live in some beautiful places. I didn't have a great reading day yesterday. I did more things yesterday than I had planned. I do have a few plans for today but I hope to read more.
We're doing great. We have accrued 12 rolls & have 5 rolls left. We only need 2 prompts filled to complete Risk. A book where war is involved. A book where a character takes a risk of any kind. We need 2 prompts filled to complete Game of Life. A book that centers on family. A book set in a school or college.
I'm currently reading The American Agent. I won't finish today but it works for both the remaining prompts for Risk.
A housekeeping note. Since this is a fall read-a-thon I used orange for books completing prompts in round 2. So if you see orange on the spreadsheets that's what's happening.
I completed Holes. I put it in the spot for a book with a circle on the cover. I think I updated everything correctly. Not completely sure what I'm going to read next. I did start an audio book yesterday - Out of the Corner. I listen to them while I drive.
