Fall 23 Read-a-Thon: Team Cat
Welcome Team Cat!
This is the first time in a while that I didn't group the teams based on their time zone (mostly because my 9 month old refused to give me space this afternoon to figure it out). So I'm interested to see where we are all from!
I'm in Louisiana, USA. Central time zone!
I've added some books to the planning tab and I'm ready to read!

I'm looking forward to this read-a-thon. I'm in another challenge that ends this month and I'm hoping this read-a-thon will push me to finish a few books.
I live in Colorado, USA, and I'm in the Mountain Time Zone

I’m happy to be joining a team challenge again. I wasn’t able to the last two or three times. Right now I’m in that strange reading mood where I tend to start a lot of books and loose interest after a 30 percent or so. So I hope to either finish a few of these started books or I will just read some shorter ones.
I live in Germany. European time. Usually I read and write comments in the morning with my first coffee before the kids wake up. Wonderful time 😆
Happy reading
Hooray!
I intended on reading more of my current read yesterday so that I'd be closer to 100 pages but alas. I did not.
So I have 300ish pages to go in A Fire Endless and about 15 hours of Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty to listen to.

Excited for another read-a-thon! This will be my third team challenge with this group. I'm in Virginia, USA (Eastern).
Like Emily I was hoping to read a little more yesterday to get closer to 100 pages left in my current reads, but I had a bit of a headache and didn't manage as much as I wanted. I do have just over 100 pages left in My Brilliant Friend, but closer to 150 left in Birth of the Chess Queen: A History. Surprisingly appropriate for our game themed challenge! Unfortunately, my library has too long of a waiting list on Board to Death or I would be reading that for the board game tie in.
I added my two in-progress books to the spreadsheet. Will add more once I figure out what I'm reading next.

I live in Norwich, UK; a UNESCO City of Literature! We love books so much that our public benches are shaped like them (some are open books where you sit on the pages, others are carved to look like you're sitting on a bookshelf above a row of hardbacks). We also have an independent bookshop and a few chain ones, a huge library in a modern glass building, and so many secondhand bookshops I couldn't even begin to count them. I'm very spoiled :)
In terms of in-progress books, mine are:
- Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty, which I'm reading for another book group
- The Stationery Shop of Tehran, which I'm almost halfway through so I'm likely to finish it tomorrow
I haven't managed to read much today as it's my niece's 1st birthday so I've been on auntie duties. I did read with her but sadly her books have enough pages to count towards the readathon!

Anyway, I am a rural midwestern US girl. Born and bred. Though what you might expect is probably not what you’ll get from me. I have changed and evolved much beyond those “rural” roots in 67 years! I am located in a little itty bitty town north of Indianapolis, Indiana in the gold ol’ US of A!

Edited to add: I am in the EDT time zone. And personally, Emily, I think it's cool that you didn't necessarily use the time zone criteria, as I'm always interested in getting to know people from other countries, etc.! So I am kinda happy the baby prevented that!! :) And I am so grateful for your efforts for AtY! Nothing is easy with a 9-month-old to care for!

I am THRILLED to be on Team CAT since we live with 3 furry felines (it was 4 until 2 months ago 😞) and we have 3 outside felines! I love my furbabies!
I should be online within the hour and will list my books. I have 3 IRL book club reads, 3 Buddy reads and a monthly group read!
MEOW!!

I think we were put on the right team Lynn, I have three cats! All boys; two we rescued as adults and another we've had since he was a kitten.
Sorry to hear that you lost a cat recently, hope you're doing okay and that your other kitties aren't missing their friend too much. We lost a cat a few years back and the hardest thing was watching his brother wander around the house looking for him :(
Aimee, I love that we are both reading Empire of Pain. It's just fascinating to me. I still have a while to go in the book, but I can't stop listening.

I was sick yesterday, but was still able to read some. Fortunately, I am feeling much better this morning! Though still a bit weak.
I am almost done with The Old Woman with the Knife which is a fascinating read! I should also be able to finish

I particularly purchased this specific copy from my favorite used bookstore because I loved the cover. And I usually don't pay much attention to the cover image when selecting a book. Perhaps that is why I was especially interested in the "peacock blue" prompt. However, this doesn't qualify, IMO. I ran it through Tineye with these results:
93.9% grey
7.1% brown
.2% yellow
I don't believe it qualifies, but wanted to put it to the group for a consensus. :) I admit I am enamored with the peacocks!! And the "yellow" is actually GOLD embossing! :)
Thoughts?

It's fascinating, isn't it, and so well written. As a Brit, I didn't know much about the US opioid addiction crisis (because of the NHS, our doctors don't have as much choice over what to prescribe so the issues over drug marketing are different here) but it came up as a group reads pick for the Seasonal Reading Challenge and I gave it a go because I'd read another book by the same author. The other book is Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland and it is just as interesting and well-researched as Empire of Pain, I'd definitely recommend it.

Not sure how you wish these shreadsheets to be marked, Emily, but went ahead and used my own idea. Please change whatever and let us know how you wish completed books to be listed. :)
I also went ahead and listed the 208 pages I read today on the Rolls Tracking spreadsheet. Today's total will exceed that, of course, but thought I'd list them now before I forget!! (I'm old!)
This book. The IRL book club I facilitate meets on Tuesday to discuss this one. It is unique, IMO. Quite thought-provoking...
Onward to finish Pride and Prejudice!

It's fascinating, isn't it, a..."
I don't know if I will ever read the Sackler book simply because I have been a victim of opioid addiction due to no fault of my own. Long story a bit shorter, I took a legal/prescribed dose of Percocet for the first four weeks following my second knee-joint replacement surgery and suffered through nightmares, intermittent insomnia and break-through pain 4 times within those four weeks. I was told to wean myself back to Aleve as a pain reliever and did so within 4 days (gradually as I knew I should...) and went right into withdrawals!! It was AWFUL! I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to retain what little bit of sanity I had left! It took a full six months to actually be able to sleep again and accomplish what I would call a full to near-full recovery! Just four weeks is all it took and I suffered 6 months of hell in the aftermath. Unbelieveable.
My surgeon informed me he had just read in a medical journal that a different company had just developed a new pain relief medication that proved to be much more effective than opioids with many fewer side effects but US insurance companies refused to pay for it and/or allow it to be prescribed. Again. Unbelievable. That makes me wonder exactly what sort of pull the Sacklers had with insurance companies...I can only imagine some sort of money exchange occurred to both insurance companies and the Sackler family's advantages. It makes me so angry! However, I am just grateful for my ability to return to good health. It was touch and go for so long... And I can now understand how some people are unable to get through withdrawals.

We were definitely meant for this team, were we not, Aimee? :)
Interesting that you have THREE male cats in your household and they get along! We have had two male cats at the same time in the past who got along, but currently our one male inside cat is definitely ready to fight any other male cat who enters the house, even if only for a minute or two! I doubt he could handle another male. He is the main one who used to play most often with our "Tigger" ("the Terror") who was only with us 6 1/2 years. She was my lap kitty and also the most anxiety-ridden and hyperactive feline I've ever seen. I am keeping various things in our house in their current "hiding places' as a memorial to her! We had to hide toilet paper, paper towels, toothbrushes (She thought the toothbrushes in the wall-mounted holder were simply there to aid in grooming her fur!), and just a couple of weeks after we got her, the car keys! We used to keep keys on a little tray on the kitchen counter, but she managed to get up there and bat them off the counter, etc., and we had to replace the one and only key for our newly obtained used car. That cost $250 minus a tow bill since the car had to be at the dealer's to be programmed! Fortunately, I had AAA coverage so the tow was covered with my membership. She took a large part of my heart with her...
BTW, the kitty in my photo is my very first indoor kitty, Smoky! She came to me at just 6 weeks of age (She could stand in my hand) AND we were together a remarkable 21 1/2 years! My baby...
Oof Lynn that sounds like a terrible experience. I'm only 24% into the book now, but it doesn't surprise me that insurance companies would be blocking drugs from being available if it's in direct competition with existing drugs. This book is both fascinating and infuriating.
On another note, I've finished A Fire Endless. I marked it for arts and entertainment, since the main character is a bard and the story centers around his music. It seemed to be a category we were low on options. That also earned us our first roll, and I've put it with my prompt.
Also, posting this here since I've posted on all the other team threads:
Mod Note: Pages read and hours listened are working a bit differently this Read-a-Thon. You must accrue "rolls" in order to officially fill prompts - which means each prompt read needs one book and one roll in order to mark it as completed. You earn rolls by reading 500 pages or 10 audio hours as a team. You assign rolls by marking a "1" in the Rolls Used column next to the prompt. This will tally on the Rolls tab on your spreadsheet, so you can keep track of how many rolls you have available and how many you have used. If you have any questions, please post on the Team Challenge Intro and FAQs thread!

They're all neutered, which helps, but even then they are a lot less territorial than other cats; our neighbours' cats are always in our garden and sometimes even come into the house and our cats just don't care! We foster other cats so they're used to random cats coming in and out the house, and my best friend runs a boarding cattery so when we go away they go and stay with her and see lots of other cats there. We've had four cats over the last ten years, all males, and never had any fights!

I've added my pages and hours from yesterday and we have now accrued a roll - if everyone else in the team is happy then I think we can put it towards your completed prompt :)
I think we should still place the completed books next to the prompts.. we just won't assign the Rolls until we accrue them.
Also, I've lowered the requirement to 400 pages/6 hours of audio because I realized it was a bit too high haha.

I think that is a well-earned adjustment to the rolls, Emily! Thank you for being flexible!
That is what has been done in the past on other team readathons--placing the books as completed and then filling in with the qualifying pages...

Great work so far, TEAM CAT! :)

That is remarkable! Ours are neutered as well...
Some cats are just more agreeable than others. Just like humans! LOL
I ended up DNF'ing my Book of the Month Club pick for this month... the writing was just so awful that I didn't have the patience for it. But that's 65 pages read for that one. I'm now picking up The Guest, which is a shorter read so hopefully I'll finish tomorrow.

I read a 100 page novella yesterday so I just slotted that in but please feel free to move it around!
I have a bit of a technical question for you all: if a book seems to fit a prompt but turns out not to at the very end, would you still count it for that prompt? For example:
- if you read a book for the "includes a murder" prompt but that character ends up being alive?
- if there was "a character of retirement age" but it turns out at the end that that character was in disguise and was actually a young person?
- if a book seems like it would partially be set in India but it turns out it's only mentioned when characters talk about their past and is never an actual setting for the book?
I'll usually move books to a different prompt if they end up not fitting once I've finished but I know some people will keep books in the prompts they read them for regardless of what happens in the book. I know a case could be made for either way but I'm curious how y'all generally approach that :)

Yesterday, I listend to an audiobook for 40 min. Is it correct that I put in 0.4? I was confused.

Yesterday, I listen..."
Thanks for the response, Fee!
Regarding the audio hours - I believe you would just write 0.67 since 40 minutes is 2/3 of an hour. 0.4 hours (40% of an hour) is 24 minutes. The easiest way to think of it would probably be to remember that 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 15 minutes is 0.25 hours and maybe just round the amount of time you spend listening to audio.
I usually round to the nearest quarter hour, so for me, 40 minutes would go in as .75, knowing I'd make up that difference the next day. Mostly because I don't want to do math.

I just finished my first book, City of Wind, on my walk to work. I'll be starting the final book of the series, Night of Flame, on my way home and should finish by the end of the challenge.
I'm also 15% into Victoria Marmot and the Road to Hell, and 23% done with Heart of the Hunted

I add up the minutes, based on the chapter length shown on Audible, then divide by 60 to get a decimal number for hours.

Sorry, I've been slacking on my captain duties with the polls going up yesterday and today! If someone wants to clean it up, please do, or I'll get to it later today.

I have She Drives Me Crazy on my Kindle which will help us out with either the sport or high school prompts, so I'm hoping to start it tomorrow; it looks like it should be a quick read.

How is this week half over already?
I finished reading The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein and moved it to the completed tab. I slotted it for multiple countries (Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, and Russia at the end) but of course there are multiple places it would fit and I never care if somebody wants to shuffle around the books on the spreadsheet. Keeping with my Frankenstein theme, I started on My Imaginary Mary. Don't ask why there is a Frankenstein theme, I'm just going with it right now. This book also has Ada Lovelace in it, which makes my math nerd self happy. It's longer, but very YA so I feel like it should read fast-ish.
@ Irene - If you want to clean up the spreadsheet, be my guest. I do not mind one bit.
@ Emily - Thanks for being our captain, even if you are super busy with other things.
@ Aimee - She Drives Me Crazy looks fun. I'm a fan of the sapphic sporty romances. I have a hold at the library awaiting the publication of Cleat Cute and I recently purchased Fire & Ice because curling.

No worries at all Emily :) I had some free time so I cleaned it up just now.
@Abbie, I love that you're doing a Frankenstein theme!! So fun.
@Aimee, thank you for finding something that fits the school and sports prompts! I started a book today that might work with the school prompt as well (The Duke Undone, which seems partially set in an art academy) but I had literally nothing on my TBR that was sport-related.
I'm also still working on my book for the set in India prompt, which I should hopefully be done with by tomorrow.

Abbie, if you like a good sapphic high school romance I recommend Some Girls Do which I read a couple of weeks ago. It's a nice slow burn romance with some well-rounded and believable characters, including a lot of great supporting characters.
Thank you Irene!
Abbie, wasn't that book great? My book club read it a couple of years ago. As someone who taught Frankenstein as an English teacher, I really liked this POV.
I finished The Guest, which was pretty awful but at least it was short. I'm going to place it on the Clue theme since the cover is VERY green.
I'm glad Empire of Pain is at least helping us get rolls, even if it's taking me a while to listen to!

However, today is much less busy and I have most of the day at home! YAY!!
I will update the spreadsheet with my pages read and books finished. I did manage to finish Pride and Prejudice and The 8th Confession. I will finish Deadly Cross today and start on Longbourn. Then I'll take a look at what is still needed to determine what to read next since my one book club meeting is now scheduled for the following week, allowing me to read something other than The Final Revival of Opal & Nev to perhaps better fit remaining prompts.
I also need to take a look at the Team Readathon prompts for the 2023 Reading Challenge Readathon that starts tomorrow. I'm hopeful to find books to fit both challenges to read over those last three days! :)
Edited to add: Upon reviewing the spreadsheet I'll read Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers next rather than Longbourn since it is the only book listed to fulfill the Trivial Pursuit Entertainment & Arts prompt.
Edited to add again! Actually, since Entertainment & Arts is fulfilled I may select a different book! YIKES!!
Looks as if we are doing super well!!

I picked up an Agatha Christie yesterday that I've been meaning to read and I will finish it tonight. Then I'll be reading more in Longbourn.
Keep on keepin' on Team Cat!!

@Emily you weren't kidding about that cover being super green!! LOL
Like Fee, I'm also hoping to finish at least two more books before the end of the readathon. I'll swap out The Duke Undone with a different book for the set in school prompt if I read on and the art academy setting doesn't actually come up very often.

I've got a day off today and a lot of housework to do, but hopefully that will mean I can finish the audiobook of Dr. Thorne. Looking at the prompts we're missing, I will probably put it down for "includes a murder" (Dr. Thorne's brother is killed early on in the story by the brother of a woman he wronged and it ends up being very relevant to the later plot).
Mod Note: Quick reminder that you have until the end of the day on Monday to post your individual challenge in the completion thread. We only have 5ish entries submitted so far, so you have a great chance of getting picked to choose a prompt for our 2024 list! Just wanted to make sure this message reaches as many Read-a-Thon participants as possible... carry on with your team challenge!

This means we've completed our first set of Clue prompts! Well done team :)
Hooray! I've finished Empire of Pain, and I've slotted it in as a nonfiction book. All we are missing is something connected to history - is anyone reading a historical fiction novel?
Roll the dice and see where you land in this team challenge!
