Hailey | 30 comments I came across a youtube video about reading and eduction. It's the Power of reading, by Stephen Krashen. I'm wondering how has reading changed your life. For me, there was a time, when I was immature, that I think novels were a waste of time because you didn't absorve as much knowledge as nonfiction books. There was also a time when I ceased reading to make more room for my "real life". I want some personal stories about your relationship with books, how your perspective shifts and matures and how books build you the person you are.

Frankie | 50 comments For me i've always loved reading. But when I was younger I didn't have many friends who read and didn't have much influence or time to do it with a bunch of co-curricular on. But as my life has gotten more stressful and busy I find myself constantly seeking books to read to escape reality and just chill out. It really helps me to get things done better by just taking a ten minute break to read.

Yannick | 13 comments I was addicted to social media, even though it was ruining me mentally, I kept logging in, day after day, every free moment I had, I was doom scrolling myself into depression. A couple of months ago I was out shopping with my wife and we entered an English bookshop on Brussels, and this store just did something to me. I can't explain it. I had loved reading Harry Potter before but nothing ever came close after that and I abandoned reading in the last decade. I bought the first 4 books of the Earthsea series by Ursula K Le Guin and now I'm reading the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, and I'm addicted to reading now. Instead of scrolling social media I'm using every spare minute to read. I think I tried to read too much serious stuff before. I rediscovered the Fantasy genre and it feels so good to escape in this fictional world and just marvel at the magic, the world building, characters, epic plots and just the English language. Yeah I'm much happier now.

Tia Matthews | 21 comments It’s given me an escape from a life that I wasn’t particularly enjoying. It’s taught me a hell of a lot about pain, grief and love and is something that I find myself wanting to do 24/7. It has given me happiness

faye | 262 comments i was quite anxious in my early high school years and reading was my escape from that, that being said too much of a good thing is never good and looking back i wonder if it really was the best way to deal with things. nowadays i tend to not read as frequently as i used to because life gets busy and i have this habit of getting too invested in a book and putting everything else on hold until i finish it. soo yeah some good some bad but all in all books will always bring me joy <3

☆EmilyEverAfter☆ (emilyeverafter) | 642 comments I stay home with my two kids, I was absolutely getting lost in motherhood. It's hard to find time for yourself when your kids are small! I read 100's of books when I was a teenager so I grabbed a 100$ kindle and decided to give it another shot. turns out I never lost my love for reading. I've read 70 books this year. reading let's me escape to a place where magic is real! in a way it saved me as a teenager and as an adult ☆

message 11: by Tayjah (new)

Tayjah I also agree that reading has made me more antisocial and recluse 😭

message 12: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn | 611 comments Pros of reading for me: I've become more confident when it comes to exploring my sexuality, I've been able to bond and make more friends with people who enjoy similar books as me, and I've been able to be more productive in other areas of my life as well (work, fitness, chores... because I listen to audiobooks while doing these tasks, I want to keep doing the tasks so I can also keep listening).

Cons: my bank account surely does not enjoy my reading habits. I also can get sometimes get distracted from the aforementioned tasks, so while my productivity has improved... it still also suffers on occasion lol... bit of a double edged sword there.

évieane (evieane) | 153 comments I feel like it honestly made everything so much more entertaining. It became such a huge part of my life, and ever since I started also being highly active here, it turned into a great hobby. Yes, my social life is quite affected sometimes, but oh well :)))))

message 16: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 57 comments There is a book… or a thousand of books for any mood or need you have and a book is always there for you when you’re stressed. Nothing soothes my soul like a book. Of course, a really well written book can stress you out too, but that’s because I have an exceptionally good imagination. When I am reading there’s no sense talking to me, because I am gone to whatever land my book has written… unless it’s a slog. I almost always finish books even if I’m not crazy about them, but yea. Books.

bailey grace (baileygr4ce) | 288 comments if definitely made me less anxious all the time and opened my eyes to other things. i stopped constantly having to be on my phone and i stopped constantly being on social media. I’ve been open to more things, book wise, and more in reality i guess.
