Julia Brough | 10 comments Try Marianne, the Matchbox, and the Malachite Mouse by Sherri S. Tepper. This is actually the 3 book in a trilogy (Marianne), but I think it would work without reading the other 2 first.

Ah the cover says with a question mark, a sophisticated virtual reality game?

Out of the box? I have yet to read it but may be worth investigating; playing a complicated game in a fantasy world. Sounds intellectual.
