Attached are a couple of interesting snippets about Lowood School, its model which was in fact a school that Charlotte Brontē and her sisters attended. Please note that there are some SPOILERS for the next set of chapters, although not for the novel as a whole.

Francis-please feel free to post into this thread-it's really here for anyone-not just mods-to post background information about the author, the time period, the geographical or political setting, or anything that you think others taking part in this read would find interesting and/or would enhance their enjoyment of the novel. We've had people post photos or illustrations of settings, links to articles, reminiscences about when they visited the geographical location, etc.
Sorry-I'm not sure why my messages aren't receiving but must confess I don't use that function other than for sending group notifications.

The first is a regularly updated ‘Anne Brontë’ blog
https://www.annebronte.org/
which as well as having many interesting and well researched articles also has a comprehensive links page to all things relating to the Brontës.

The second is an access portal to the John Rylands Library digital resources. The John Rylands Library is in Manchester, England, and is the depository for a large collection of Elizabeth Gaskell literary material. Almost all of it has been digitised and can be viewed online. There are over twenty samples of letters written by or relating to Charlotte Brontë in the collection which are available to read.

For those who are not familiar with the life stories of the Brontë sisters (and brother), this accessible, potted version is worth reading, as are the links referred to within the article.

Thanks Trev!
Some years ago I readThe Brontës which is pretty long and detailed but really engaging and well-written for anyone who wants to pursue their biographical information any further.
