Time to look ahead to our next series, which will start November 1, 2023. What would you like to read and discuss with the group? Nominations are now open!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Rules for nominating a series:
1. The series must be complete (as far as we can reasonably tell).
2. The series must be fantasy (I know, seems obvious).
3. The series should not be targeted mainly for middle school or a YA audience.
4. The series must not be one the group has already read. Look through the list of discussions or the group bookshelf to see if we’ve read it before.
5. Each member may nominate one series. Please tell us the name of the series, the author, how many books are in the series, and the name of first book in the series. If you want to add more information, please feel free.
6. Nominations no longer need a second to move into the polling as long as they meet the other guidelines.
8. Nominations will be open through September 11. We will then have a poll. If there are a lot of nominations or the results are close, we will have a run-off poll between or among the top vote-getters.

Nominations are open! Let’s go!
Kathi, Moderator for FBCS

The Founders Trilogy, 3 books by Robert Jackson Bennett, starring with Foundryside

Book of the New Sun, 5 books by Gene Wolfe, starting with The Shadow of the Torturer
Greatcoats, 4 books by Sebastien de Castell, starting with Traitor's Blade

Nominated but disqualified:
John Cleaver series, 6 books by Dan Wells, starting with I Am Not a Serial Killer, see guidelines #2 & 3

Christos | 1 comments I nominate the John Cleaver series by Dan Wells (6 novels). It’s like Supernatural meets Dexter, it’s about a teenager who has serial killer tendencies (hasn't killed anyone... yet) who uses his serial killer skills to stop supernatural monsters in his small town. I love all 6 books overall but 4-6 are not as good as 1-3 which I think are perfect.

Not only do I love this series but now is a good time because it’s around Halloween and and Dan Wells is currently working with Brandon Sanderson on a novel that takes place in the Cosmere universe

Kimberly I would like to mention that A Curse of Krakens is supposed to release in November - I don’t know how you handle reading the next book in a series. Unless I have the wrong group it looks like A Plague of Giants and Blight of Blackwings have already been read? Is there a link to the Read list? Maybe that’s a December nomination…

I don't think that series counts as fantasy though. Maybe Urban Fantasy if you're generous.

Ryan Dash (ryandash) | 57 comments The Licanius Series, 3 book series starting with The Shadow of What Was Lost. We read the first book as a group but not 2 or 3.

No one has nominated a series by Kevin Hearne (author of A Curse of Krakens), so I am not sure what you are referring to, Kimberly. Maybe you have us confused with our “parent” group, Fantasy Book Club, or some other group.

Would you like to nominate The Seven Kennings series by Kevin Hearne? Since the final book in the trilogy is coming out in November, and our series read will start in November with the first book in the trilogy, this series would qualify.

While some readers have it shelved as Fantasy, most have it as Horror first, then Young Adult, then Thriller. So it does not meet our guidelines (#2 and #3). I’m afraid I have to disqualify it, but please feel free to nominate something else.

The group read this series in April-June of 2022, so this nomination does not meet our guidelines (#4). I’m afraid I have to disqualify it, but please feel free to nominate something else.

The group read this series in May-July of 2020, so this nomination does not meet our guidelines (#4). I’m afraid I have to disqualify it, but please feel free to nominate something else.

Kimberly The Seven Kennings series by Kevin Hearne! (how do i link to an author or book?)

It must be done from a computer because the app doesn't give us a linking option. Here is the link: A Plague of Giants. Is this correct? I haven't read the series myself!

You can also do it on a tablet (I use an iPad) but go to Goodreads via a browser (Safari or Chrome, for example). I will add the nomination.

I’m going to nominate the Collegia Magica series by Carol Berg, 3 books starting with The Spirit Lens. I have enjoyed the other books by her that I’ve read—interesting characters and worlds, plus intriguing plots and themes. I’ve had this on my shelf for a while and would enjoy reading and discussing it with others.

Michelle (michellehartline) | 135 comments Is it too early to second? If it's not, I second Carol Berg. She's one of my favorite authors!

Nominations no longer require seconds, as long as the nomination itself meets the guidelines. But yes, Berg is one of my faves, too!

Michelle (michellehartline) | 135 comments I'll nominate Sebastien de Castell (author)'s Greatcoats series. It's a swashbuckling type of story but a little darker. The series has four books beginning with Traitor's Blade.

Christina (christinaovallsbooks) | 68 comments Do you have to read the First Law books first? it kinda looks like this trilogy is an offshoot of another one.

My understanding is that, while it takes place in the First Law universe, it can be read on its own.
