Theresa | 15524 comments I get caught up with work for a few hours and all kinds of fun and games happens here!

@Rachel N - all those homemade sweets and special liqueurs you were slipping Ursula while you subbed for Anita paid off big time! Enjoy the ride!

@Anita et al - on the 2 dice advantage answer - so glad my logical analysis and answer were supported -- that it gives 3 die. May I some day be gifted that option.

@JoAnne - 🤚🏻- that's my 'slap' for you! Not only should you not interrupt the rules, you clearly should be cautious about interpreting the rules! Thank you, oh Mistress Queen of the DNF, for a spot of badly needed entertainment today.

As for me, I started finally my current Subdue book The Stationery Shop - which is also the only remotely LitFic I will finish this month - and whizzed through nearly the first third before bed. I hope to be back for a roll by Friday latest. May Ursula's kind and generous mood persist.

message 361: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15524 comments @Cora - I feel your pain being pushed back by Ursula to Clerk from Porter just as you finally shook the Clerk dust from your boots! And in an odd coincidence - you were shaken back to the same space on Clerk I was! #97! Fortunately it was a book I wanted to read and quick.

@Tien - look at you reading and reviewing quick as a 🦊fox and getting a new roll!

@LibraryCin -- Choo! Choo! you are driving the locomotive at #100! The regular driver is delighted to get a break and have a cream tea served by the Royal Coach staff. Enjoy yourself! I get your debate about continuing - I don't think at this point in the year I will start a new board even if by some miracle I finish my Porter board (not likely as I'm sitting at #20 on Porter), even though I already have an Engineer board ready. I have year long challenges to finish, and a deep desire to spend December reading Christmas mysteries and romances. In fact, I'm going to be pleased if I even get close to finishing Porter!

No, you all will have to wait for Anita. I am sure she just got hung up and she should be a long some time this evening. I cannot hang out much longer though, so the board won't be updated until the morning.

Which advantage do you have, Amy? Sorry, I am a little behind on catching up with this thread? Generally it's read a book and then use the advantage, but it really depends on which one you have.

message 369: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15524 comments I just texted Amy and asked. I believe it is the special advantage she won with the zip codes adding up. She's not used it yet as far as I can see.

Amy will either answer directly or ask me to by text.

In future, in order to save Anita's last shreds of sanity in her senior Train Management position, if any of us have a question about a specific advantage won, either describe it in the question post or link back to the award post or even just give the comment #.

The timing is perfect if you have books on your tbr that also fit the winter tag, or October flurries. I created my porter board right after the tag was announced, and it was very fun earning those extra little rewards. My tbr is still huge but I managed to get to the books that were on there the longest.

message 372: by Joy D (last edited Sep 26, 2023 06:46PM) (new)

Joy D | 10081 comments In conjunction with this roll, I am using a tag-related benefit to move forward 1 space, putting me on 77.

message 373: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12916 comments OK folks. Seemed I spent too much time in the real world and didn't check in and had caused a serious ruckus!!! Poor CGI Tom had to come looking for me. I saw him peeping in corners at Northeastern. He certainly sent me a missive from Theresa and he sternly said no cocktail for you tonight sweetie! You do not get our treats until you check in with a complete explanation, Young Lady! OK, Father Tom. Here we go. Then I can crawl into bed with my next book.

After rolling the 6 that gets me to number 38, Midnight in Paris, Ursula grants me a 4 and I land at 42 at the Crimson Thread. Terrible book by the way. After my review, I threw it off the train.

On Message 167 on September 13th, I announce the special advantage. In message 172, Anita posts it. In message 192 I post that it is a 44 space advantage. In page 196, Anita states I miscounted, its actually 42. The dame knows her math and her baseball. She was right. In Message 197 she responds to my question about how to use it - and she says I can use it in place of a roll. Somewhere in there, Joy D clarifies the same thing, but I don't see either of those messages, because after every 50 or so, my phone flips to the next page.

So... I then stupidly ask the same question, and still am under the misconception that it is 44 instead of 42. My re-asking of the asked and answered, is what caused the tizzy, I do believe. Do not trust Tom when he said I was drunk. I may have been at one point on the train. But truly, this does have to do with Satan and his Internet and tech conspiracy against me. He lives at Sprint.com and aims to frustrate me at every turn. After 192, when all the fun happened, I did not see the responses because the page flipped into page 4 around the 200th response. Just bad luck.

So now the rules are clear to me. I can use the advantage, or take the one dice porter roll, with no other advantages. Anita already rolled the 1, and I am not thrilled with the land where 42 places me, so this is my plan. I am going to take the one, and land on 43. Then, I am going to use my participation points to move 2 spaces, and this lands me on 45 - The Egypt Game. This is my next subdue read. When I complete it, I will use the 42 space advantage which puts me at 87. But I have read 87. So I am going to stay on 87 and read 86, which is Witch Hunt. Perfect for October Fall Flurries. Then, I will have enough time to finish the Porter Board and roll off, before 2023 finishes. Which I never believed would happen, and pleases me more than you know. Now.... Did everyone follow that? Consider me on number 45 - next reading the Egypt Game.

message 374: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12916 comments Clarifying my own poor editing. If you use the advantage, you cannot use any other special advantages. But I can if I don't use it this time. I take the roll of 1, and I can use two of my participation points and then use the advantage after that book is read.

And for those who dunk, fresh made coffee, and for those who don't, an array of leaf teas steeped in china pots supplied by the Parlor Car and Royal Coach. Freshly made mimosas will be available for all.

Needless to say the cabana boys there have been slacking off, and they look terrible! I am getting Tom in there today to whip them back into shape and tomorrow they will host a fine dining experience for everyone! Stop in after 5 on Thursday and grab a plate of the most decadent bites of anything you dream of! Just a hint of what will be on order:

Crab legs and a wide variety of fresh seafood (Tom flew them in from Alaska!)
Porter House Steaks -put your order in for your choice of doneness.
Lamb Chops made with fresh mint sauce

Any side you can dream up-in fact any food you can dream up! We have hired a team of magicians for the evening and they will be conjuring you a plate of all your culinary dreams.

Oh how nice!!

My wedding cake (a million years ago now) had a different flavor for each layer since I just didn't want to make up my mind. And yes I had a piece of each!

Sue | 2719 comments @Nancy - We often read so many similar books - Hoping to hit a few of the Winter titles on my new board this month!

@Robin - I looked back and my Engineer Loop 1 took two months.

I've been traveling so much for work I've been getting tons of audio "reading" in. I start my book in the car on the way to the airport, switch to earbuds once I'm there and pretty much keep it going (except for going through security) until I arrive at my destination.

I'm grateful most planes have charging ports in every seat now!

@Theresa (through a mouthful of cake - sorry!) I'm having a great time with the Cabana Boys you sent back to the Caboose. Currently getting a neck massage and drinking a nice white wine.
