I hope I'll be able to explain this. I mainly add or combine Italian translations to the original books in English for my publisher.
When I add translated editions or I combine translations with the original book, I have lately noticed that the title of the "main" book in the author edit/combine page - the title of the book in bold letters - is no longer the title of the original English edition but the title of a translation (I can't tell if it's the last one that was combined, but I guess so). It's a bit confusing because I think people are used to looking things up by original title. What am I doing wrong?
You're not doing anything wrong. I've noticed that too on the combine page and don't know why that is. But on the author page, the English books are still shown as the default, and that is what the "general public" sees.
That is a recent change to the combine page that seems to be an error. It shows indeed the title of the edition at the end of the editions for that work. The title previously shown was the title of the most popular edition, not the original title. And as far as I know it doesn't influence the search.
Yes I reported that too https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and someone opened a thread in the Feedback group, but so far no one from Goodreads answered. It's confusing and annoying
