There are numerous translations of Fathers and Sons from which to choose. I have listed a couple that are available for free download.

I plan to use an old Modern Library edition I’ve had for a number of years. The translation is by Bernard Guilbert Guerney. I also plan to dip into the Hogarth translation. Spelling of the characters’ names will vary depending on which translation you use.

I’m still deciding whether to stick with my old copy that doesn’t even identify the translator or get a new version. I’ve heard good things about the new NYRB translation by Nicholas and Maya Slater, titled Fathers and Children. I don't know if it's the best translation, but since I've read this before and I'm interested in the politics/historical theme of the novel, I decided on Michael Katz's Norton Critical Edition for a close read.

Incidentally, Katz notes that Fathers and Children is the accurate translation of Turgenev's title. Western translator's apparently liked "Sons" better, but the title refers to the theme of generational divide, without any male-to-male relationship connotations.

Have long had this among my supposed TBRs, so hope you all will motivate me through it. I will take my Norton Edition with me on hopefully a relaxing week near the Atlantic -- beaches et al. (To suggest how long, I bought this copy when Borders closed its doors!)
