Catherine (semi active) | 3084 comments Has anyone read this book before or watched the movie? What do you think of it? Favorite character(s) or scene(s)? This book has been on my to-read for a long time; I can't wait to read this! :D

*Please use spoiler tags if applicable!*

Cari Legere (carithewriter) | 104 comments I've done both!

Cari Legere (carithewriter) | 104 comments I'm proably gonna bring my paperback with me camping (I own a paperback of Fellowship, and I own a hardcover of the entire LOTR)

Oo nice!! Did you like the book or the movie better?

Yay!

Camping sounds so fun! I hope you have a blast:)

Nice! Have you read the whole series?

Lilly | 409 comments Read and watched it!! Ah LOTR is sooooo amazing. I had to read all of the LOTR books before watching the movies. And you know Peter Jackson actually did an AmAzInG job of LOTR. It’s not exact to the book but is a masterpiece in its own right for the world of movies. The Hobbit though… arghh they completely ruined the Hobbit movies. The first was good but the last two they just had me mad. Ahem sorry I’ll stop ranting.

Favourite characters?? Ahh. Can I have one per people group? 🤣
Favourite Maiar (also known as wizards): Gandalf.
Favourite hobbit: -oh so very hard- I’ll have to say Pippin.
Favourite elf: Legolas.
Favourite dwarf: Gimli.
Favourite man: Aragorn. Ahh but also Faramir. You’re giving me too large a scope of people to choose from. 🤣 Oh but wait Faramir isn’t in the Fellowship just in the latter books. So yes, it’s Strider/Aragorn then.

Wait. Wait. Wait. You haven’t read it Catherine?!? 🙊 I cannot believe you’ve gone this long without encountering Tolkien’s masterpiece.

Lilly | 409 comments (Also I’ve been telling myself I need to start my bi-yearly read of LOTR so this is perfect!)

Catherine (semi active) | 3084 comments YES! Peter Jackson did an AMAZING job. I loved the movies! I haven't watched the Hobbit movies- only the original trilogy. By the way, have you watched Rings of Power? Haha, this is exactly the place to rant! XD

That's actually wise, to choose a favorite from each people group😆

Gandalf is the best! Whoa, Pippin is your favorite hobbit?? Not Sam or Frodo? Whoaa. I think Jaidie's favorite hobbit is Pippin too! That's funny that both of you like Pippin a lot- I don't like Pippin very much, because they don't portray him very well in the movies.

Legolas and Aragorn are the best characters, in my opinion! I don't remember Faramir very well; is he (view spoiler)

No, I haven't read it 😂 I was told that there were a lot of lengthy descriptions in LOTR- I'm not a huge fan of a ton of description, but since everyone else loves LOTR, I'm willing to give it a chance ;)

Lilly | 409 comments I greatly appreciate Sam and Frodo both but character-wise Pippin is so much more amusing and seeing his character throughout the book and his deep friendship with Merry some of my favourite part of the books. People often say I’m a Sam sort of a person. They say “Faithful to a fault, happy to just be living my life without purposefully doing much in the way of adventure but happy to tackle it when it comes along, trying to bear my all my friend’s burdens, and an appreciation for cooking food” though I do NOT share Sam’s love for gardening lol

You don’t remember Faramir?!? Ahh. No. **Gather’s breath** I suppose they didn’t make a great deal of Faramir in the movie and completely changed his character. I was so unhappy with them for that. They didn’t even give him black hair. Like at least get the actor to LOOK like Faramir.
Oh I see. Yeah there is a lot of descriptions initially when you encounter anything new of significance. Which I appreciate so that I can fully picture the scene before getting to the action. Although I do find that many people don’t appreciate it so much.

message 11: by Cate (new) - rated it 4 stars

Cate (redaugust) @Allebei I love Aragorn in both the book and movies. He just might be my favorite character. :D

@Catherine Fave scene of Fellowship - I love all the backstory that we get in The Council of Elrond chapter. Fave character - Aragorn, with a close second being Merry Brandybuck

@Lily I agree that Faramir was such an underused and underrated character in the movies. They made him a bit of a jerk, honestly. I really like him too, though. :)

Catherine (semi active) | 3084 comments @Lilly Aww OK, that totally makes sense! I've only watched the movies (haven't read the books), but Tolkien really did a good job on the characters.

Haha that's awesome! Sam is the best person, in my opinion. He's the kind of person I'd want to marry XD You like cooking? Nice. What kind of food do you cook?

😆 He isn't the (view spoiler) Huh, I really thought I remembered right, but I guess I didn't! Yeah, I get frustrated when I read the book before the movie adaptation and the movie messes up what I thought the characters looked like.

Yeah, that's what I like about movies- you can absorb all of the beautiful description without actually reading about it XD I appreciate good description, but I'm someone who can be easily bored by it, unfortunately.

Catherine (semi active) | 3084 comments @Allebei Yes, he's really impressive! His imagination is amazinnnng.
Oo, that's an awesome tradition! Do you and your family watch all three movies in one day?? Oh my gosh, yeah, Aragorn is my favorite character!

Ooo good to know. I haven't watched or read the Hobbit before. I've already started LOTR- do you recommend that I read a summary of the Hobbit before I continue LOTR?

Catherine (semi active) | 3084 comments @Cate Cool! I can't wait to get to that place. Aragorn is my favorite character! Wow, Merry and Pippin are really popular favorite characters:))

Catherine (semi active) | 3084 comments I'm so sad I wasn't able to read this :( One day!
