Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1068 comments I have finished Druidess. It was good, but as I choose to read the books in chronological order, rather than publishing order, it seemed clear that this book was written as a prequel to the Gates of Eden series - there are things which weren't completely clear that I think would have been to someone who had the other books.

Also, it fills the Urban Fantasy slot in my Bingo, which actually completes my first row - I've filled 60% of the slots, but this is the first row or column completed.

Andrea | 3543 comments Finished reading Zoo 2 since I had read Zoo. If you're into Crichton and Rollins and those kinds of adventure books that try to toss in something resembling science then you might enjoy. But I'll admit the science premise is a HUGE stretch, but while this outcome may not be likely, who is to say what human impact will really have eventually...

Also finished Straken, I think I liked it better when each trilogy jumps a hundred years or so rather than immediately pick up where the previous one left off :) I wonder what would happen if they didn't always have a handy teenaged Ohmsford lying around. The older ones, even if still available, seem fairly useless.

Next up, PIRATES! VAMPIRES! VAMPIRATES! ARG MATEYS!

Yep, the last book in the series, Immortal War by Justin Somper I've had this sitting around from the library for a month now, its high time I finish the series I started back in January.

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1068 comments I have started reading The Age of Heroes: A Historical Sci-Fi Epic, a novel based on the premise that the gods of the Bronze Age were actually aliens. While certainly not an original premise, I will see what the author is able to do with it.

Andy | 130 comments Started Jade City by Fonda Lee

message 55: by Charlie (new)

Charlie | 7 comments I just finished Jade War, and it just keeps getting better!

message 56: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3543 comments Finished Immortal War. For a series with such a silly premise it was surprisingly well done and taken seriously. On the whole I enjoyed it. These is one small novella in the series that I'm unable to find anyway, so I can't really say its entirely complete, ah well.

Back to Shannara, this time with the trilogy that bridges Shannara with The Word and the Void, I'm curious to see how it goes - Armageddon's Children by Terry Brooks

message 57: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 618 comments Finished Artemis Fowl, City Spies, and Flyte. Re-reading Sky Raiders. Starting The Keymaster's Quest.

message 59: by Kivrin (new)

Kivrin | 542 comments Finished An Echo of Things to Come and started on book #3 The Light of All That Falls. Islington tells a great story but it is DENSE. Thank goodness there are recaps and a glossary!

That's on my huge TBR.

message 61: by Andy (new)

Andy | 130 comments I really enjoyed the Licanius trilogy

message 62: by Pierre (new)

Pierre Hofmann | 207 comments I finished Prador Moon. I'll be moving to the next book in chronological order, Shadow of the Scorpion.

Btw the Licanius trilogy is also on my TBR list and I may go to it after finishing the current Polity series, considering the good opinions posted here.

message 63: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Swick | 1 comments I just started reading Empire of Ivory which is my last reread of the Temeraire series. This month I’ve also read To Shape A Dragon’s Breath, Siege and Storm, Hawksong, and A Court Of Thorns and Rose

message 64: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 1074 comments I've been meaning to get to the Temeraire series for years now.

message 65: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 618 comments I've only read the first Temeraire. I like Novik's more recent books more.

Now on The Longest Night of Charlie Noon and rereading The City of Ember.

message 66: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3543 comments The Temeraire starts of great, then it goes downhill and gets all angsty, and then it picks up again, though I haven't finished the series yet I need to do a reread and get through the whole thing :)

message 67: by Connor (new)

Connor Hassan | 10 comments I read The Forever War and Roadside Picnic this month, two long overdue reads of classics that really held up to their longstanding good reviews and praise. Definitely enjoyed The Forever War more and am definitely looking into the next books in the series.

message 68: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 1074 comments I'm reading historical fiction dealing with the Second Macedonian War, Ben Kane's Clash of Empires. I'm also reading Tuyo World Companion.

message 69: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 618 comments The Longest Night of Charlie Noon was really good -- very short. A mix of sci fi, horror, and mystery.

I didn't care much for the other books that followed "The Forever War". It's a standalone, IMO. What I really like is to read the other books similar to it from different decades & compare the attitudes. 'Forever War' was Haldeman's answer to Heinlein's "Starship Troopers". Heinlein was a peacetime soldier writing a pro-military book in the 1950s. Haldeman was a Vietnam vet with the opposite attitude. Steakley's "Armor" & Scalzi's "Old Man's War" have similar settings.

message 71: by Connor (new)

Connor Hassan | 10 comments Thanks for the feedback Jim, I was seeing similar opinions on the next Forever War books, so I may hold off. Starship Troopers was a cool book, and I have Old Man's War on my TBR. I'm gonna check out Armor though.

message 72: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 618 comments I loved Old Man's War.

message 73: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3543 comments Finished Armageddon's Children. Its good but post-apocalyptic stuff is never my favorite genre.

Reading The Wells Bequest by Polly Shulman, second book in the Grimm Legacy series. In the previous one it was all about fairy tale stuff, this will be all SF stuff, could be fun.

message 75: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 1074 comments I just started All My Sins Remembered by Joe Haldeman last night.

message 76: by Robert (new)

Robert | 129 comments I finished ONE WORD KILL in a couple of days, a quick and compelling read with STRANGER THINGS flavour.

Well I'll have to get my hands on the second book, then. =)

Oh good!

message 82: by Kivrin (new)

Kivrin | 542 comments Finished The Light of All That Falls. Massive book. A good ending to the trilogy--I cried at the end. I did have some issues with some of the story, but overall, really good read.

message 83: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3543 comments Finished The Wells Bequest, fun middle grade tale where various SF things like time machines and death rays are actually real, and yet still fictional. Same as the previous book which was all fairy tale stuff like mirrors that talk. The third one is The Poe Estate which I assume will be all the horror/supernatural kind of things. Will be reading that very soon, but first, Shannara!

The Elves of Cintra by Terry Brooks, second book in the trilogy.

message 84: by Carril (new)

Carril Karr | 5 comments I read The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch, as that was the book to read for The Literally Wasted Lounge FB group for August and September. I wasn’t looking forward to this book but happily really enjoyed it . This is the first book in a series so may have to look for the next one.

message 85: by Gary (new)

Gary Gillen | 133 comments I finished reading Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson. It is the third novel of four in his secret novel series. Interesting mix of genres. Great ending. I am reading The Dark Half by Stephen King. And the Crossroads of Twilight by Robert Jordan (Book #10 of the Wheel of Time). It’s been called the sloggiest of the novels of the series. So far, it feels slow, but the writing is great. I plan to read Starter Villain by John Scalzi next.

Andrea | 3543 comments Annis wrote: "...Memoirs Found in a Bathtub..."

Oh! So that's what the neighbour's cat keeps looking for in the bathtub. He'll hang over the edge and look inside and we joke that at his house they keep their dead bodies there and he's always disappointed we have none, but maybe he was looking for his memoirs...

I really want to read Solaris one day.

message 87: by Esther (new)

Esther Pierce | 7 comments Just re-read The Hurricane Code by James Aura. The book is so comprehensive in such a short story, yet covers most of the things that wait for us... if we don't start taking climate seriously. A seriously good read.

Jannelies (living between hope and fear) | 48 comments I finished Mindbreaker by Kate Dylan
