I have been searching for weeks for the author or title to a book sneak peek I read a couple of months ago.
The story starts with a girl of about 16 and her mother being held captive in their home by soldiers. They keep asking where the girl's father and older siblings are. She hates her father for leaving them to their fate and never agreed with his decision to join the rebellion. She tells the soldiers she doesn't know where he is. Her mother yells at her to be quiet and tells the soldiers not to listen to her. They kill the mother right there. Then a man asks the girl 'how long have you been reading minds? You've been answering me and I haven't spoken a word aloud since I walked in the door.' Now they know she reads minds they take her to their leader where over the next 5 years she becomes the leaders right hand 'man', reading minds for him during interrogations. She wears a soldiers uniform and a head covering where only her eyes show, so no one knows what she looks like, but word of her abilities spread. The people nickname her 'X' or soldier X.
