Pearl | 11 comments I really like robots, but I have a hard time finding any that weren't about them trying to destroy us or the future being a robo-apoclypse, anti-robot or anti-human. I would like suggestions for books about robots. Preferably robots that still look like robots; not sexy, brooding hunks with metal insides. I'd also like a happy ending for them.
I've read Asimov's books and plan on reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". I'm also open to graphic novels or comic book suggestions.
Thanks!

G.G. (ggatcheson) If you don't mind indie books, I'd recommend Robots Like Blue Robots Like Blue by Anthony J. Deeney
I loved it.

Melanti | 330 comments The Cyberiad by Stanisław Lem is an anthology of trickster/fable-ish tales staring two robots.

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments Thinking out of the box, may not really fit your robots criteria:
The Hacker and the Ants .
There is a Version 2.0 available and somewhere online a total twist added to the ending from a friend of the author (available for free). The link to it may be in the book itself.
Highly recommended from me.

Scott Saturn's Children and Neptune's Brood by Charles Stross.

Peter Meilinger | 469 comments If you like military science fiction and robotic soldiers sound interesting, Keith Laumer's Bolo stories are fantastic. Take a ludicrously large and dangerous tank, add an artificial intelligence that could teach humanity the proper meaning of duty and honor, and you've got a Bolo. It's turned into a shared universe over the years, with dozens of authors adding stories, but to my mind the original Laumer stories are the best. You can read what I think of as the quintessential Bolo story here:

If that doesn't leave you wanting more, then Bolos are not for you. Incidentally, two of the other stories you can read by clicking "Contents" on that page - Exploration Team and Superiority - are also fantastic.

Hillary | 270 comments The Automatic Detective is a great book, written in the noir style of a PI novel, but the PI is a robot.

Cumbling Michael (CumblingMichael) | 165 comments Iain M Banks wrote a series known as the “Culture” novels. There are ten in all, but the first was Consider Phlebas. In these books, humanity co-exists with hundreds of thousands of hyper-intelligent artificial intelligences, known as “Minds”. The Minds were originally created by humans as super computer systems, but have deliberately evolved and developed themselves into something much greater, and more mysterious. The Minds are largely benevolent, and can be very funny, but they definitely have their own agenda. I thought the whole series was a really innovative and refreshing take on the possibilities of machine intelligence. Highly recommended.
