Task #22: Discussion Questions for Master of Djinn

Our book club read A Master of Djinn to complete #22 on the Read Harder Challenge list. However, there were no online discussion questions for the book, so here are the questions we developed and discussed for future users:

1. Was this an acceptable standalone read, or is the rest of the series necessary?

2. What were your favorite parts of the world building? And least favorite?

3. What did you think of hte way the magic intertwined with world history, different cultures, and pertaining to different world leaders? Too often, magical worlds are hidden from the mainstream characters in the novel world, so what did you think of the fully intertwined magical/nonmagical world in this novel?

4. Favorite character and why? Least favorite character and why?

5. What did you think of Siti and Hadia both? Their different relationships with Fatma? Their backstories? Their overall roles in the story?

6. What do you think the angels really are since the sleeping djinn states: "So that's what they're calling themselves these days"?

7. Why do you think the angels wanted the seal of Solomon stolen?

8. Were you surprised by the pacifist djinn and introvert artist? What else surprised you? Did these alterations make you consider other non-conforming roles/stereotypes/careers?

9. Did you suspect Abigail early on? If so, why? If not, were you shocked? How did you feel about Abigail's consequences at the end and her 'forgiveness' toward Fatma for ruining her world domination?

10. How did you feel racism, sexism, poverty, and equality were addressed here? Were those topics approached naturally or obviously? Heavy handedly or lightly?
