Jim Townsend | 69 comments Good morning,

I guess I'm the bad apple of the team and will remove myself from it. I did not finish World Is My Home A Memoir by James A. Michener by James A. Michener (February 3, 1907-October 16, 1997). Because I ran around with my girlfriend, I got to only page 120 of 518 (including a six-page index) and cannot possibly finish it by this evening. I'll need to leave this team to the faster readers among us.

Jim

Cynthia (cynthiab) Jim, running around with your girlfriend is a valid excuse for not finishing your book. I would definitely read less if I had someone to run around with.

You aren't a bad apple - this just isn't your ideal challenge. This is my first challenge with a weekly deadline.

I bet next week a lot of people don't get their book read. The kids are out of school all week here.

Cynthia (cynthiab) Week Two Spot 15
House of Echoes by Brendan Duffy
Read: 3/28/15

Rating: 5 stars

Review: Brendan Duffy's debut novel is a gothic horror story set in present day upstate New York. Ben and Claudia buy a huge house in the little village where his mother was born. While Claudia works on refinished and decorating the house, Ben is working on his next novel. He's writing about the tragic history of the village.

The entire time I was reading, I was thinking of The Shining. It has some similar elements. The house is humongous, with a thousand acres of surrounding land. It's situated in between two mountains, with heavily forested land. Of course, there's the nor'easter that lays down two or three feet of snow during the denouement. And little Charlie, 8 years old, and he feels it when bad things are coming.

It was a great read. I can't believe this is the guy's first novel. He's an editor, and I think it shows. There's nothing in there that shouldn't be, and he makes every word count.

I got this book via NetGalley. It's coming out April 14.

Ora (oeamis) Week 2 Spot 15 5th in series
Mine to Have (Mine, #5) by Cynthia Eden
Completed: 03/27/15 4 stars

It seems because of her mother’s past and choices she made, she put Elizabeth’s life in danger, even two years later after her death. All Elizabeth knows is that she has been kidnapped and is getting ready to be tortured when Saxon is able to save her. Eventually the FBI realizes that all of Elizabeth’s hit goes back to a man, Luther Blake, who her mother help give key information to put him in prison for the rest of his life. While attempting to keep Elizabeth safe, the FBI agent in charge of her investigation realizes there is a leak and has a difficult time keeping her safe. He eventually makes a deal with Luther Blake to rescind Elizabeth’s hit, by finding his daughter, Zoe and showing proof that she is alive and well. In the end Elizabeth hit is rescinded and Luther finds out shocking information.
Throughout the story, it seems like Luther is pulling strings and is able to manipulate people to do his bidding even though he is behind bars. As far as the storyline, I get why the author had a lot of corruption within the FBI, and once I got into the book, it didn’t really matter that the author took a few liberties with protocol. I’m glad the author didn’t spend too much time explaining what happened with Elizabeth’s mother and concentrated on how it affected Elizabeth’s life and also the development of her relationship with Saxon.

If it's possible for you to edit that post with your review, it would be great. I can have our posts linked up and I only have to check off as we finish.

If not, that's fine. I know I can't edit a post from the mobile app.

Review:

This a re-release of a 1991 book. Chelsea was engaged to John who was friends with Devlin McVey.. The two men
went out on Devlin's boat and it was blown up. John died and Devlin went missing. Chelsea hired detective, Ned Jenkins to search for him. He said I found him on
an obscure island called Pardis. The pictures I took make him a close match, he looks different now but I think they are the same man. He goes by the name Mitch Russel
now. Off Chelsea goes for an adventure on Pardis and to find Devlin. Another just ok book.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 982 comments Week 2 - #1
Treasure by Megan Derr
Treasure (The Lost Gods, #1) by Megan Derr

Read: (3/28)

Rating: ★★★★★

Here's the thing, I had no clue what I was getting into when I picked up this book. It had been recommended to me, but as per usual I hadn't really read the blurb or anything. But it fit a bunch of challenges for the moment and I thought why the hell not.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GLAD I DID! I loved this story so much. I'm a sucker for a good fantasy tale with adventure all wrapped up in one yummy bundle. And this was oh so yummy. I was kept glued to the page as each new twist was revealed. This is definitely an easy smooth read, not all deeply intricate the way an epic fantasy novel would be, but it's all the more enjoyable because of it.

As with any fantasy novel the world takes some getting used to while you figure out the rules. This is no exception, but it's so richly depicted I never felt like there was information I didn't have. It's kept simple in its explanations while still having a very rich and vibrant culture. I loved all the nautical themes here of a country very much dependent on it's seafaring people. The nastiness of the mermaids was disturbing in their sheer violence, but suited well the desperation of the country as the anniversary of the dragons power switching to the royal family approached.

The characters here were wonderful and touching. I loved the prologue that introduced us to two scared little boys from opposite walks of life determined to make something better. Kin and Kyo were such lovely characters. The self sacrificing Kyo determined to take the concerns of his entire country onto his own shoulders, but still wanting to go there via the hands of the man he's dreamed after for years. Kin may be the youngest captain to take command of his ship, but he's made a respected name for himself despite his half breed heritage. Being half mermaid may make them attack his ship more than others, but he's thrown himself into the battle and saved more of his crew than can be expected. Watching these two find each other again was just lovely.

Ok so I particularly enjoyed that there were really two couples going on in this book. Raiden and Taka were just adorable too. I loved Taka's personality his taciturn nature so suited to being the secretary he's grown up as. Of course his reveal may have been one of the biggest of all. Raiden is every inch the dominant personality. His seduction of Taka was fun to watch.

I really loved all the diverse personalities in this story and how all the different elements wound together to play into the prophecy of the Lost Gods. Also the teasers lines tossed out to introduce characters in the later books and the redemptions needed to return the other gods to the world.

This entire world was wonderfully detailed and the romances handled very well. I loved the adventure these four were on and kept cheering for them to open up to each other and be the strength of each other. The ending was ever so satisfying. :)

Cynthia (cynthiab) I will check for Izzie's review in the morning. We'll have to use our free pass if it isn't in, I guess.

I did send a PM, but this is the last week I'll do that. If someone else wants to chase down review posts, they're free to do so.

message 74: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 982 comments Technically she has all day tomorrow to post it I believe. While we can roll at midnight Thursday night/Friday morning as long as the review is posted by tomorrow night she's still good. Yes posting it on Thursday is helpful as then we're free to roll right away, but we have all day on Friday to get it posted and roll.

message 75: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (cynthiab) I was relying on this section of the rules:

"**Very Important**
ALL reviews must be posted BEFORE a team can roll and advance to the next spot.
That being said, players need to have their reviews in on Thursday (for the Friday roll). Real life sometimes gets in the way of play so you do have Friday to get your reviews in before the team is penalized. If a player fails to have their book done two times throughout the game (excluding a prearranged absence) they will no longer be a part of the team. "

I took that to mean that there are no penalties (other than starting late) if a team is unable to roll until late Friday. The asterisks, the bolding, the word 'must', and the all caps BEFORE seem to be trying to emphasize the importance of getting all the reviews posted before rolling.

It would be helpful if the rules stated you can roll any time after midnight Friday as long as you know all your teams reviews will be posted on Friday. Of course, that implies you have some sort of communication with your team members.

Ora (oeamis) Cynthia, I understand your frustration since it was something I dealt with with the last round of rr challenge when I was team captain. I take It you haven't heard anything from Izzie yet.

message 77: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (cynthiab) No, I haven't. I just told Jenne that I'm pulling out. This is by far the simplest, least challenging challenge on GR. So it shouldn't be the biggest PITA of my week.

Ora (oeamis) I don't think so, however Jenne has the final say on that.
Since Cynthia has pulled out I guess we need to decide on a new team captain and decide if we are going to use out free pass or wait to see if Izzie posts her review this evening.

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments That's right, the text items are a new alternate this round. If your book has ambulance anywhere in it it'll fit the alternate.
