Jake Slater has had a contentious relationship with his wealthy in-laws, the Kingstons, for the entire 13 years of his marriage to Sarah. Her family never thought Jake was good enough for her especially as his job as a high school football coach falls way below their idea of a decent living. Jake and Sarah have a young daughter, Piper, who is the apple of her grandfather's eye, and after Sarah is killed in a hit and run accident, Lars Kingston sues Jake for custody of Piper. Their animosity even stronger now, Jake takes Piper away from the Kingston's influence and moves to a small town. For her 13th birthday, Jake has promised Piper a visit with her grandparents. After a sumptuous party, which Jake was not invited to attend, he returned to pick up his daughter at her cousin's house. As Jake approached the front door he heard a gunshot and a scream. Breaking through a window Jake came upon the cousin bleeding from a gunshot wound and with her dying breath she whispered that "Piper knows the truth". Jake runs out of the house only to see his daughter shoved into a black truck which sped away from the scene. Jake calls 911 but when the police and the Kingston family arrive, he is quickly put under suspicion of the murder. Jake knows he must do anything to find his daughter so he flees into the nearby woods. It is just the beginning of his nightmare as bodies begin to pile up, Jake is suspected of multiple murders and a sinister hit man is on his trail.
Wow. This was a wild ride. It was a quick read with a great deal of tension. I will definitely find the author's other books. It's a good one!
