This is going to be really vague, I apologize. I read this in a school library in 1974-5. The main character traveled a ruined world in a hovercraft. At one point, the term "power curve" referring to the hovercrafts engines was used. He visited a library, where a few solar powered lights were still functioning. I think he found someone there, an older woman, and took her with him on his travels. I know, not much to go on. Thanks everyone

John Christopher's The World in Winter, heavily features hovercrafts and fits the time period.There is a brief visit to a library, but not much else fits.
