Terence Bailey is about to be released from prison for breaking and entering, though investigators have long suspected him in the murders of six women. As his freedom approaches, Bailey gets a surprise visit from Maddison Logan, a hot, young influencer with a huge social media following. Hours later, Maddison disappears, and police suspect she’s been kidnapped—or worse. Is Maddison’s disappearance connected to her visit to Bailey? Why was she visiting him in the first place?
When they hit a wall in the investigation, the FBI reluctantly asks for Rachel’s help in finding the missing influencer. Maddison seems only to exist on social media; she has no family, no friends, and other than in her posts, most people have never seen her. Who is she, really? Using a fake Instagram account, Rachel Krall goes undercover to BuzzCon, a popular influencer conference, where she discovers a world of fierce rivalry that may have turned lethal.
When police find the body of a woman with a tattoo of a snake eating its tail, the FBI must consider a chilling possibility: Bailey has an accomplice on the outside and a dangerous obsession with influencers, including Rachel Krell herself. Suddenly a target of a monster hiding in plain sight, Rachel is forced to confront the very real dangers that lurk in the dark corners of the internet.
Rachel Krall, the true crime podcaster star of Megan Goldin’s acclaimed Night Swim returns to search for a popular social media influencer who disappeared after visiting a suspected serial killer.
20 chapters (view spoiler)[ wow, it seems like a really bad idea to dangle Rachel in front of a serial killer! And then to leave? what is up with this guy?!?! I'm not sure I like the detective.
Interesting the case she was brought in to. I'm not sure who to believe but it makes me think the girl who went missing might be a niece or daughter and the guy driver - the one who appears to be killing - is that her brother? Cousin?
(view spoiler)[ Okay, now I'm really confused are these kids - all tied through this tattoo. . .another way? How is this guy killing people? Or is it not him?
I assume the driver is killing people - is he holding Maddison?
and Rachel really is putting herself in danger. I guess I'm not surprised she's staying, I think her dogged want to know the truth is why Terry Bailey wanted her on the case but yikes, who is really killing these kids and the previous women? (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ wow, now I don't know how anyone is connected. I thought Madison was connected to the guy who took her but he didn't know Rachel's name so now I don't know why she's invovled was it because Terry wanted to prove he didn't do it/didn't do all the murders?
and do we think Madison is the one who shoved the money in the mom's hand? from who? and why? from Terry? that doesn't make sense - because she didn't do it for all the girls that were killed (at least that we know of!)
and the very different MO's. Does that mean terry did half and the uber driver guy killed the other half?
and I called BS on the hotel person giving out the room number - especially in a high-end hotel where there are influencers who would need to hide from the public/might be in danger from stalkers. but meh, lol, I'll roll with it! (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ wow, never would have guessed the girls HAD met over a kitten and then he took them BOTH that night. I'm so glad that Hailey/Maddison got away but wow! at the loss of her new friend. what an amazing person she was to sacrifice her own safety like that
super twisted that that the killer was after them. I like how they tied Terry in to it and that it was his Mom's house he was digging through, not someone he was going to hurt/rape. So sad they focused in on him so much.
I like that Rachel was going to stay behind and do more on the girls they had found and try to find them.
Love that Maddison grabbed her mom and went back on her trips! (hide spoiler)]
this one was pretty good! I hope we get more from this series!
I hope they do since they offered book one and two its only reasonable don't you think? and they tend to continue with an author if the books sale. Like what's her name..... she has a lot of beach scenes on the cover......Elin Hilderbrand
These stories stand well on their own! You can read book 2 without book 1. Book one just gave you a bit more character development for the main person but the mysteries stand well on their own and are contained in one book!
I think he was just a red herring (you weren't sure why he died and who killed him). I think it just added an additional danger to the event and the influencer world (he was the influencer right?) and was a reason for Rachel to be harassed by the cops
