There are alternatives to Kindle. I just got a Kobo and I love it.

Project Gutenberg ( gutenberg . org) has thousands of free English-language books in non-Kindle formats (epub, html, PDF, etc.), which you can read on a computer or tablet or phone. They are all old books that are in the public domain (no longer copyrighted), but I've found many wonderful free books at this site.
