Read this book in the past 10 years, NOT a YA book, that has a side-story in it about a white male protaganist who travels up to the arctic circle. He meets an Inuit woman with children in a cabin in the snow. They can't communicate because he speaks English and she speaks Inuit, but somehow he determines that her white husband has gone totally insane and is living in the wilderness near their home. The protagonist meets with the insane man over a period of time, and eventually learn why he went insane. Protaganist also has sex with the wife. (Thanks to Heron for filling in some of those details) This is a side-story in the book, definitely not the main story thread. Help! (This is a repost with added information from other people way back in August when I first posted it to no avail!)

Trying again, because I can't remember what I posted last time, but was is a story within one of the Golden Compass books? They weren't Inuit there, obviously, but that feels so right.
It does have a similar feeling to The Golden Compass, but I only just read those this year so I know it can't be them. Thanks for your help, you clued me in last time to the Inuit part (I just knew there was something "other" about the woman and her family) and reminded me that the protagonist sleeps with the woman!
