What I mean by this is, I can read a lot of novels, tell you the plots, what happened, etc. but, I’m generally terrible with remembering character names or even small details that most remember. If it’s a really good book, I’ll store some of that info in my head but for the most part I don’t. Just wondered if it was just me?

No, I mean if I reread it a lot (the Harry Potter series) I'll remember the details and sometimes even quotes. But most of the time I don't really remember the details or characters even though the book is very good. I think the main reason is that I read a lot of books in a short period of time and get the details mixed up or just can't remember. I don't know if that answers your question but that's how I feel. Though all of my friends that like to read remember the tiniest details and I just wish I can too.
