I thought that the first two books in this series were absolutely amazing. The third book was not as exciting, but still really good. But I found the fourth one a little hard to get through. It was almost painful to read; the plot was so dumb. I liked how the first couple of books were a simple but thrilling adventure about six mutant kids running for their lives, and there wasn't a lesson to be learned. But then in the most recent book, basically all of the bad guys have been killed off, and the bird kids are suddenly concerned about the environment and global warming?! It just doesn't seem logical or realistic. Anyone can save the world from global warming--you don't need wings to do it. I understand that the author was trying to send that message out: that we can all save the world, without being mutant half-bird people. But we already KNOW that. So if you're going to write a book about kids with wings, those wings have to have a purpose. Does anyone else understand what I'm saying?

Yeah, I see that he was setting it up for the next one...I just never expected that these books would turn in that direction. I hear enough about global warming at school. I understand that it's an important issue and it does concern me, but I don't need Max and her friends to preach to me about it. This may sound mean, but I just want to see them run for their lives; it's more exciting.
yes! jessalina and lunawolf, i totally agree with both of you. jessalina, i completely understand what you mean--I feel like Patterson forgot about a lot of plot twists that he threw in with the first three books and never resolved certain issues. And yes, lunawolf i hated that movie for the exact same reason--it starts off happy and then suddenly global warming takes over and you're left saying: "What? I hear enough about global warming on the news! I just wanted to watch a movie and not think about anything too much!" And although Maximum Ride is much darker than Happy Feet, it had the same kind of issue. When I sit down to read Maximum Ride, I expect a good adventure story; I don't want to be preached to about global warming.
I absolutely agree! I practically sold my soul to my parents in order to buy that book, and, frankly, I was disappointed. It was way too short, had almost none of the former glory of the first few in the series, and didn't have enough mystery or suspense. Global Warming is definitely an issue that needs attention, but why turn it into a cheesy reason to "save the world"? I expected something more creative than that from Patterson.
i looked forward to the release of this book but it let me down...for one, it was too short. i picked one up and in comparison to the other 3, it was teeny. secondly, it was a lot slower than the first 2...the plot wasn't the best. oh, all the evil erasers are gone. now what are we gonna do? ooh! i know! let's talk about global warming (not that everyone has heard of it a bajillion times already)!! yeaaah...this book wasn't as humorous as the others. there were a few funny parts (birdseed...hehehe). oh yeah. and max lectured too much. hahaha! there wasn't enough action to quicken the book. maybe that was patterson's intention, but it was disappointing after reading the first 3. yes. i do think there is going to be a 5th one. hopefully he'll write up to us reader's standards. :D
I was disappointed by the fourth one too though I did read a blip on the back that great care was taken with the action and language in this story and I wonder if he toned some things down a bit based on advice for selling better in a broader market. It's being marketed for fiction for all ages, rather than just teen or adult as most of his other novels are.
Oh yeah... I saw that on the back of the book too before i read it, and i was like "oh no..." Seriously, I know this sounds kinda shallow and morbid but the books are no fun without all the violence.
I don't know that it's shallow and morbid Brigid. In fact, I think that there was violence in the 4th one, but only implied and not clearly, so it was difficult to even get your imagination into it enough to be enthralled. I did like it though and am hoping that things will be back with the next installment.
In fact, I don't know much about the writing process I'll admit, but I've seen some stuff about using ghost writers, etc..... I wonder if there's a possibility that this type of setup may have contributed to the change in style.....
I agree. I thought maybe I just over the series, but have found others who agree this book isn't as good as the others.
It wasn't az good as the others. I think the problem was that for most it they were too safe. Like, half of the book they were in Antartica. There was no fighting there or anything. And also, it was a little too focused on global warming and not enough on the flock...yeah. I hope that if James Patterson does write another one, he focuses less on clobal warming and more on the flock.
Yeah, it really wasn't as good. The whole 'new powers' thing was also sort of a cliche, and the story wasn't the amazing, action-packed flock-centered book that I expected. It also seems really different than from where the series was heading. Without all the battles and running away, it hardly seems like a Max Ride book at all.
I am begining to think that Patterson had his books "Stolen". I read the original "When the wind blows" and enjoyed it, Then I read "The lake house" Which simply blew it... This is going down the same road, and I think it might be due to Ghostwriting. Specifically... take an look at how long it takes for him to write each book.. While there are such things as prolific writers, The turnout is inhuman... and much of M.R.'s original flair and amazing writing are lost in "MEGA CORP/GLOBAL WARMING/EL NINO (yes... take an look at the new book "Waterwings") = WORLD GOING TO THE CRAPPER!

well not much can happen now cuz all the erasers are dead including ari so it's like WHAT'S THE POINT ANYMORE? he should have just wrapped it all up at the end of the third book. i mean obviously patterson has no ideas left, cuz... you know... GLOBAL WARMING?? i never in a thousand years thought that Maximum Ride was ever going to preach to me about global warming. sheeeeesh
i totally agree. the fourth book was a serious disappointment. but i think my favorite of the Maximum Ride series was the very first book the Angel Experiment. the writing was awesomely funny and kept you reading. i finished the book in two days. lol.
I read this on a plane ride on the way back from vacation, and I was very excited to get to read it. This book frankly says that James Patterson doesn't know who his readers even are. For instance, as newer Harry Potter books came out, the audience got older and the books got more mature. That's what this book SHOULD have done, but JP is clearly targeting an audience with the mentality of an eight year old. It made me angry, and sad. School's Out Forever and The Angel Experiment are probably my two favorite books, like, ever. I was incredibly disappointed, because the characters didn't even act like they did in the first book. Bleh... just discussing it makes me angry.
Ugh. The 4th book was SOOO bad, it was painful reading it!! It was extremely boring, filled with a bunch of lectures about global warming and all that doom, and with none of the awesome action-packed chases that I always look forward to with these books. I already KNEW all that gw jazz, and it was annoying to hear it again. Plus Max is totally NOT herself anymore, which sucks! And Fang makes me hate him even more with every page. What happened?!?!?!
I couldn't stand that 4th book. Worst of the series. Especially considering the others are so good. I was practically afraid to read MAX, but for anyone that was considering not reading it because of the 4th, do read it, MAX the new one totally rocked. Especially compaired to the Final Warning.

The other books were so much better. I would list them in this order, the best being 1.

The final warning was a utter and complete dissapointment. What was Patterson thinking? Was he under pressure? Maybe he Thought that the book needed something different? I read it all the way through just because If i skip it I feel like I cheated... But now that i know that other people didn't like it I should have. It is NOT worth it.

lol. Look at the bigger picture. Max and the others are somewhat more affected by global warming than we are. Cause. Anyways, this one wasn't too bad. I own 5 of the 7 books in the series. James Patterson is writing the 8th and final book in the Maximum Ride series. Hopefully, it ends with a bang.
I hated it, I was extremely dissapointed. My sister warned me not to read it, but I thought it would be like the others. How wrong I was.

Wow, this discussion is super old. To be honest, I now think the whole series is pretty much a fail.... The first two books were exciting at least, but I've read up through book 7 now and realized that basically nothing was planned out. The first couple of books were all about build-up, and then nothing was ever resolved. >_<

because it goes along with the rest of the series, her trying to save the world. this time he just showed a way of how she was trying to save the world. i like the part were she had to go rescue her mom and when the pizzas exploded
