Lorelei Johnson | 19 comments Hello!

I need to create a couple of series please.

Series: Chicago Witches
0.5 - When You Forget Me
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
1 - When You Burn Me
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Series: Curse of Fate and Fae
1 - Prince of Never
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Thank you in advance!

Lorelei

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Hi, Chicago Witches series created:

https://www.goodreads.com/series/3721...

On Goodreads, decimal series numbering is reserved for shorter length books (novellas). At 200 pages, 'When You Forget Me' sounds like a novel length item by our praxis. That's why I numbered it #0.

As for the second series, I'm leaving that for now as a series in my opinion must constitute of at least two books.

Lorelei Johnson | 19 comments Hi,

At under 40,000 words, When You Forget Me is classified as a novella, hense the request for #0.5.

And as Prince of Never is the first book in a series with the second book expected early 2024, I don't understand why a series page can't be created. It clearly lists the series name on the cover and book 1 ends in a cliffhanger.

In my experience, 40k words usually result in 150-160 pages on Amazon. 200 pages is a long established cutoff limit for novels on Goodreads, so I wish to ask other Librarians of a second opinion of what to do in this case.

As for the second series, it's my personal choice. As a reader I don't like the 1 book series pages, so I don't want to take part in creating more of them. Other Librarian members are free to make different choices on this topic.

Lorelei Johnson | 19 comments If it isn't a rule, then there isn't a reason for you not to do as I have requested. Personal preference should not play a part. The book is a novella by usual standards.

I would like to draw your attention to this example:

Wherein a book is listed as 0.5 and is 304 pages long.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2280 comments I found this from the former moderator (& long time staff member)

I have always counted over 140 pages as a novel.

& librarians are volunteers so we do get to choose what edits we do. For example, some librarians will decline to work on novels featuring sexy times or in languages they don't speak.

I guess the problem I have is that while the print page length is longer, this is due to a number of factors such as font size, line spacing, and front and back matter.
The story itself is 35,000 words, which classifies it as a novella by common standards, which list a novella as anything from 20,000 to 40-50,000 words.
I'm also not really sure why this is being made such a big deal out of as I have found examples where novels have been listed as 0.5, and it's not as if my request is going against any morals or anything like that. I'd simply like my listing on Goodreads to reflect the retailer information.

Carol, many thanks for the staff decision link and your opinion. I'll leave my edits as they are and let someone else take over if they wish.

We work from page count though. There is nothing in the Librarians Manual about using word counts.

Here is the link in the Librarians Manual about series
https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

Librarians are required to follow the manual or risk using their librarian status - & with last year's changes to who is allowed to add books, librarian status is a very precious thing!

Since I rarely add series I will leave that question for a librarian that works with prequels that have been published after the other novels in a series- which is the case here. & on the series page it is listed as Book 0.

I'd simply like my listing on Goodreads to reflect the retailer information.

We are a book cataloging site, not a book seller. Try to think of GR as a library rather than a book shop.

There is nothing in that link about how to determine a novella's size at all, so I fail to see the relevance of the link.

This issue has been now resolved. No further response is required.

It seems we need an update to the Librarian Manual to establish the length of novellas by Goodreads standards. I'll work on that.

This is a confusing topic! I've been reading about what makes a novella and the rules are blurry, in particular when it comes to word count.

Seeing as Goodreads does not have word counts, we'll need to establish our boundary by page count. I'm inclined to agree with annob, that 200 pages should be the limit for a novella. In this case, it's fine to leave this first book as a novella for now; however, this could change once we add the limit to the Librarian Manual. I'll announce to the Group once there's a final call.
